‘I just don’t see what the big deal is, I mean I don’t need a flower to tell me who my friends are.’ duchess scoffed

‘Hmm, I guess but I think they’re cute.’ Faybelle replied as she stretched. ‘Don’t you and lizzy have one in your dorm? I thought you liked them’

yes, until recently duchess had no strong feelings towards mood roses they were a fun keepsake or decoration and nothing more.

Duchess sighed, ‘Well it’s just that sparrow keeps bugging me about them and it’s annoying.’

Faybelle froze and lifted her head mid extension, a smirk slowly covered her face. ‘Sparrow huh? Why don’t you just do it? Scared it will be more than friendship?’

‘No way! I’d barely even count him as a friend more of nuisance, I just think it’s annoying.’ In part this was true duchess wouldn’t consider what her and sparrow had a friendship but then again mood roses don’t have a colour for frenemy/situationship.

Duchess looked down at her mirror phone, another hext from sparrow.

‘Is that him?’ Faybelle smirked

‘Yeah.’ Duchess hated when faybelle was right.

‘Goooo, go, go, what’s the worst that could happen?’

Duchess did not want to think about the worst things that could happen, she was of course, listing them in her head from not that bad to a catastrophic fairytale world ending result.

He wanted her to meet him at his tree house. She hated that tree house, it stunk of teenage boys and there was always clothes and music albums littering the floor.

Duchess crossed her arms tightly. ‘fine, i’ll go.’

Sparrow looked up from his guitar with a smile. ‘Hey duchie, finally decided to come join me then’

she rolled her eyes. ‘Got sick of you bothering me so much, my mirror phone was about to overheat.’

speckles of dust floated through the light that shined on sparrows face, highlighting his hidden freckles. Duchess stared as she moved to sit on the bed. She had hoped that would be enough to evoke a comment from sparrow, instead he just sat playing different chords; As much as duchess liked watching his hands glide across the strings (not that she would ever admit it) she did not want to be the one to start the conversation.

Finally, he looked up. ‘so swan, have you given in yet?’ There was something in sparrows eyes that duchess couldn’t quite decipher, was it hope? doubt? Maybe he was just hungry?

‘if you mean those stupid mood flowers then,’ she continued with an appropriately dramatic sigh, ‘i guess it could be fun or whatever.’

sparrow smiled and walked to the side of his bed, putting down his guitar and picking up a singular mood rose. Duchess wondered how long he had kept it there, was it there just for her or did he just happen to have one lying around? Her mind raced faster with every step the boy took. Was it too late to grab her things and run? Maybe if she was quick enough she could figure out how to time travel and pretend she never decided to come here.

‘you don’t have to be so nervous y’know, it doesn’t matter what it says, it’s just some stupid rose.’ There was that thing in his eyes again.

Duchess scoffed, ‘yeah just a stupid rose, it doesn’t even matter.’

Through all of her many auditions and shows, Duchess swan had never felt so closely watched before. She held out her hand waiting for the rose, closing her eyes in a possibly juvenile attempt to lift the pressure.

There were no thorns on these roses, that was the first thing duchess felt, choosing not to focus on how her heartbeat hitched when their hands ghosted over each other.

With her eyes still clenched shut, Duchess knew it must have changed colours by now. She relaxed her face but before she could look a warm hand shifted her face and pulled her into a swift kiss.

Was this really happening? Once the shock had passed Duchess leant further into the kiss , grazing sparrows rough stubble with her hands. Their lips passed over each other with purpose and when they pulled away, breathing deeper, they looked at each other. Eyes zipping from lips to eyes before Duchess realised why she had came here.

The forgotten rose lay between the two, the red forgotten rose.
