I feel so called out.

But no, really, cheap Bic pens are fucking awesome! Once you get the hang of it, they make nice hard lines, can also leave light sketch marks, and will shade like a pencil. Want thicker lines? Just retrace your stuff.

Fancy purpose-built pens meant for line work have their place, but if I could only have one of them, give me a good ballpoint pen with regular ink anyday.

Dude, some of my best pieces have been done entirely with a Bic pen.

And yes, brand matters. The Bic brand ink formula doesnt smear as much as others, saturates better, coats the ball more consistently so you can get super fine and light strokes, and the ball is more precisely aligned, for less wiggle in your lines, and the buildup on the tip occurs more slowly.

A number of tattoo artists I’ve known swear by training with these as the perfect way to discipline your hand to be able to shade in monochrome well. If you can draw well with a Bic, you can be a decent tattoo artist.

I set aside pens which sleep more scratchy/put out more ink just so I can use them later for drawing. It’s so much easier than using those fancy ones unless you need a suuuper fine line. All you have to do is change the angle/pressure of your hand
