The amount of effort ficwriter does in order to write a fic. "nah the story doesn't need to be that accurate it's just a fic I'm not getting any money out of it" and then as they keep writing and posting their browse history is something like "moon calendar in 1981"
one of my favorite this american life segments of late is about the people who played orchestra pit for phantom of the opera on broadway and how, like, a sizeable majority of them had literally been playing the show since it opened in 1988 (on broadway. I know it opened in 86 on the west end, you random pedants, but I am specifically talking about broadway musicians) because their contracts stipulated that they'd have jobs throughout the show's entire run... but nobody anticipated that phantom would become the longest-running broadway show of all time.
and none of these people wanted to walk away from a guaranteed job, so very few of them ever quit. they just kept doing the same show eight nights a week... for twenty or thirty years... and by the time it finally closed last year most of these musicians (who had been working together for DECADES) hated each other and really really fucking loathed phantom. I can't stop thinking about it. it's indescribably hellish to imagine but also the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.
can you imagine.
[ID: excerpt from an article reading: One of my favorite stories, which should drive anyone who has every played in a band crazy-- thereâs this bassoon player who has sat next to the same clarinet player since 1988. Sheâs convinced he plays half a note4 flat on every note heâs every played. He denies this. /]
one of the best things about fanfiction is that you can make the characters say fuck
#every time Kate does something    BRIDGERTON SEASON 2
I heard this metaphor growing up, and in my case, it backfired supremely, because I went out into my neighbor's backyard where a rose bush was growing, and the one I tested had like 30 petals (it was yellow, but definitely a rose of some kind), and as a very logical lass, I came to the conclusion that you could have premarital sex AT LEAST ten times before your future husband would even notice something was up. Moral of the story? Test your metaphors on the weirdest and most neurodivergent child you know before writing your weird religious propaganda.

Pedantic nitpickery of the day: âdeath of the authorâ and âfuck canon I do what I wantâ are not the same thing.
Which is not a critique of the âfuck canonâ approach to fandom, thatâs just not what Death of the Author means.
@korramills said:
Iâll bite. Whatâs the difference between those two?
âFuck canon I do what I wantâ is just an approach to fandom that can mean any of the following:
I am not particularly concerned with being canon-compliant in my fanworks and headcanons.
I am not personally motivated to have an extensive knowledge of the canon Iâm fannish about.
I will freely rewrite, overwrite, or just plain ignore part of canon that I donât like.
All of which are, again, fine. Fandom is transformative. Rewriting and reimagining the text is part of what we do.
Death of the Author is a critical framework based on the 1967 essay âLa mort de l'auteurâ by French literary theorist Roland Barthes, and posits that a text should be interpreted without regard for the authorâs intent. (Itâs worth noting here that like all critical frameworks, Death of the Author has its limitations, and Iâm not going to get into arguing for or against it hereâonly that itâs a theory that exists.)
Obviously, thereâs some potential overlap between these two ideas. But the critical difference, as I see it, is that Death of the Author is not about discarding or rewriting the text; it simply suggests that once the text is out there, it exists unto itself separate from the author, and the authorâs intended meaning is no more authoritative than the interpretation of a reader/viewer/audience member.
And though the lines can get blurry, I think itâs always worth drawing a distinction between finding alternate interpretations of a text, and throwing out the text altogether.
death of the author: the text says the curtains are blue. I think that means they represent death, based on my whole reading of the text. it does not matter what the author thought they represented, or if they represented anything: part of a work is the readerâs experience of it, and that includes their interpretation of what certain things mean, even if thatâs different than what the author thought they meant.
fuck canon I do what I want:Â the text says the curtains are blue. I write fanfiction where they are red, because fuck blue curtains.

âAs far as words go, âcryingâ is louder and âweepingâ is wetter. When people explain the difference between the two to English-language learners they say that weeping is more formal, can sound archaic in everyday speech. You can hear this in their past tensesâthe plainness of âcriedâ, the velvet cloak of âweptâ. I remember arguing once with a teacher who insisted âdreamtâ was incorrect, dreamed the only proper option. She was wrong, of course, in both philological and moral ways, and ever since Iâve felt a peculiar attachment to the tâs of the past: weep, wept, sleep, slept, leave, left. Thereâs a finality there, a quiet completion, of which âdâ has never dreamt.â

this is so fuckign funny. rubio just walked into the senate chamber and said âthis is bullshit, right?â and partisan divisions were healed
heartbreaking: worst person you know makes a good point
No, this is real. Reuters. CNN. It passed the Senate but needs to pass the House and be signed by the President. It wouldnât come into effect until November 2023, to give the transportation industry, tv schedulers, etc. time to adjust. Iâm crying. This is funnier than when they made Juneteenth a federal holiday the day before it happened.
You cannot possibly imagine my utter shock at clicking those links and Not seeing a rickroll but instead an honest to god article about the US Senate abolishing daylight savingsÂ

Toddlers are so pure. She doesnât understand that we help her with certain things because sheâs little. She thinks that everyone just helps each other like that. So she tries to blow on my food and cut it up for me and tries to help me put on my shoes.
i was giving little wagon rides to a baby around the backyard one day and all of a sudden she hops off and slaps the seat of the wagon telling me to get on because it was my turn and i was like no itâs ok im too heavy and she was like NO ITS UR TURN and kept tugging on my hand so i would sit down. eventually i got on and it was just a little 2 year old trying so hard to push me around on a wagon not understanding why it wouldnât budge but still so determined to let me have my turn lol
I donât think Iâd realised how many casual compliments we pay to our toddler until she started casually complimenting us back, because experience has taught her thatâs How Social Interaction Is Done, and thereâs nothing quite like a very earnest three-year-old solemnly and sincerely informing you that you look wonderful and smell nice to make you feel really good about yourself
I tell her sheâs my best girl. She tells me Iâm her best auntie. Then we both feel good about the world!
Teach them kindness.
my little cousin is 3 and she stands there and goes âyouâre doing it!â whenever iâm like, making food for us, or doing the laundry, or pushing her in a stroller up a hill. she is the most encouraging sweetheart.Â
