playing a sims legacy challenge & i keep forgetting i have the game set to autopopulate mainly from my library of sims (as opposed to randomly generated ones). imagine my surprise and terror when i send my teen to her first day of high school and her teacher is. uh.
@contrariian's etienne asked: “Do I want to know what just happened?”
nealie's panting hard, back against the wall like an injured animal. hiding and licking her wounds. only, her hiding place of choice is etienne's shop after hours. there had been tears in her eyes as she knocked at the door frantically, calling his name. they don't even know each other that well. fucking humiliating. it's the recoil from that humiliation that makes her nearly snap at him for asking a question.
but instead, she wipes the blood from under her nose and forces herself to relax. deep breaths, while she can, while she's safe, because it won't always be that way.
"probably not." it's tempting to call it a stupid choice, what she's done. "i made some enemies. it got a little..." out of hand. fucked. overwhelming. terrifying. her next inhale stutters on the way in. looking at him gravely, pissed with herself but pleading for grace, nealie searches for words.
"i'll make it up to you."
she's lucky he's as old as he is, and that he's well-fed; the scent of fresh blood inspires only a minor craving, rather than any pang of genuine hunger, and it's easily pushed down. if his eyes linger on the blood, it can be explained away as concern for her injuries. it's easy to see her as a woman in need of help and not prospective prey. and despite his dry question and the arch of his brow, he does want to help her.
"there's nothing to make up for," étienne responds after a long moment. he offers her one of his rare smiles, the expression small but warm, and produces a neatly folded handkerchief. odd and old-fashioned, maybe, but so are most things about him. as he holds it out, he adds: "don't worry, it's clean. do you need a place to stay the night?" he's hardly going to send her back out into the dark if she, as she says, has enemies. "i have an apartment just upstairs." it's the only reason he'd heard her calling for help at all.
are you mocking me? // from felix... teehee :)
mark thinks: are you mocking me? what a laugh. mark thinks: as if anyone would ever want to be you, mocking or otherwise. cunt.
that, however, doesn't show on his face. instead, it's a painted smile, two fingers pressing his glasses up from the bridge. working around people for so long has really helped train the 'i don't want to be here but i'll act like this is the only thing that's important' facial expression. it's easier than anything else.
" no, was i? i absolutely didn't mean to. really, it's an accident. what can i do for you, mr. beaumont? " there's a loud clap that echoes through the room, mark's hand on felix's shoulder. there's no hard feelings, see? no need to worry about anything.
( even though mark really, truly thinks felix is the definition of cunt. ) @contrariian
he has the somewhat distant sense that he shouldn't be here, that perhaps intruding upon percy's life like this is ill-advised. but a father deserves to know the sort of people who are influencing his daughter, doesn't he? especially since percy (as she told him herself, once!) has a far better sense of the motives of the dead than those of the living.
well, felix doesn't know the supernatural, but he knows people. and he doesn't like this man, not his smile or the chummy way he touches felix's shoulder. he doesn't shake mark off, though. no reason to sour relations further, not when the stakes are whether or not he gets to know his daughter. still, his handsome jaw tightens and ticks once as he looks down at mark. his expression is careful, but there's a look in his eyes that seems to wonder: what does she see in you?
because he saw percy speak to mark. saw her eager smile, the tilt of her head, and even though he was too far away to see the sparkle in her eyes, he knows it was there. she likes him. felix gives him a once-over, not very subtly. for some reason.
"right." a not-quite smile. "it's been a few years since i was in the city. i suppose i just wanted to explore, and percy seems to like it here." he says her name casually, as if he isn't being pointed about it. "thought i'd check it out."

JAVIER BARDEM as ANTON CHIGURH in No Country for Old Men (2007) dir. The Coen Brothers
Ah! And what if he is fantasy, ey? Her fantasy. That's right. Her escape and her getaway! Her retreat from his ilk? Because — and do applaud yourself, my illustrious goodsir — you've guessed rightly, indeed, your wit so daggered and clever and terribly sure. Yes, this knave with his strong shoulders has held her like a bough, both her heart and her woes shared in company. And it wounds. She's but a prisoner kept chained to these sniveling lords. He's seen. Like a ruby, she is loved only for the fame her name so brought.
But not by him. Looking over, war forever hard in his eyes, he's no care, a beast of hardship, for those turns of vanity.
"That how I'm supposed to see things? Look at something beautiful and wonder how I'm to get my hands on it?" Henry knows what he's getting at. He's trying to play him, but no, no! She chose him. And he must know, question it until it eats him, that that's the proof that he's better. Better favored than him. "My apologies. I wouldn't know, my lord. Truly. I'm a peasant, better made to admire from afar, and she is beautiful, I would never deny it, God is my witness, but if I remember rightly, I believe the taking is suited more for my betters."
Like for conquest. A barbarian. This foul yokel...! Unyielding, Henry stands firm beneath Felix's gaze, petty, solid, and far more clever than he ought to be.
he is clever, felix is forced to admit. clever and stubborn enough to take some of the wind out of the young lord's sails, leaving him adrift in the hall, standing like a buffoon. utterly speechless. and, though he'd never admit it, a little impressed.
still, he'd insist, he's no power-hungry lord after the princess for her titles alone. so fair is she, like an angel or a fairy-queen, that even were she a scullery maid he'd pursue her. and unlike those vapid baronesses and countesses who, dripping with jewels, giggle emptily at everything he says, the princess really, truly, listens. and she responds in turn! thoughtful and clever and well-read, her mind sharp as the steel hanging from her knight's side.
yes, he decides, it makes sense she'd choose for her guardian one who could keep pace with her in conversation. and if she truly thinks so highly of henry... felix might alienate persephone by crossing him.
he gathers himself, exhales. schools his expression. he doesn't have to like this upstart—no one could ask that of him—but he can try for civility. "of course not," he says, tone level. "you're a man of chivalry, aren't you? i suppose one shouldn't believe everything they hear." lies. infuriatingly, most talk he's heard of henry has been nothing but praise. "you must understand my reservations. lesser men would surely covet her, wouldn't they?" not like us, is the unspoken epilogue. an olive branch, though not an entirely honest one.
PEDRIX / THE BARE NECESSITY (2019) dir. erwan le duc
if i can lock in and learn to gif im gonna make a gifset of this but until then. the beautiful crashout that made me go I GOTTA MAKE AN OC OF THIS GUY
Bollocks! On the contrary, you snot-nosed cretin, if ever tattled on, the reward for such sarcasm has ought to be riches. You see, it takes something of a mighty saint to do as he does, to so struggle with standing as he does and with all that clenching of his hands at his side as he does. Clearly, anyone lesser would have gone lunging in immediately, smacking those gauntlets hard as hammer in that proud and sharp nose. Respectfully, Sir, this is respectfully, isn't it?! Hear, hear! You've still your bobbing, whippet head on the strong of your shoulders!
(He knows Beaumont sees him. He does. Problem is -- and this is just the first, of course, for so numerous are those failings of this wretched pest -- he is a serf, and as such, is a right miserable fool at all things pretense.)
"I mean no offense." Except he does. He means every offense. He means to chuck him bodily out these vaulted windows, too, until he tumbles arse-first into the not yet pruned and very thorny rose bushes, but there. One can scarcely go tattling to the king that his jawline 'implied' that. "But she's taken me on personally, Sir. Vetted me. I wouldn't suggest you would think so lowly of your highness' virtue, as she is just and proper and to be your wife, but..." But...? "Well, aren't you just questioning her judgement? The soundness of her mind?" Why...! This cur!
oh, he knows. like some damned devil in his ear, the fact taunts felix: persephone chose henry. he's no soldier assigned arbitrarily to her side, not even a member of the king's service, and yet she'd—what? batted her lashes so sweetly at her father until he'd granted her request and allowed this... knave to protect his only daughter? and what could she see in him, anyway?! no title or riches to his name, nothing but work-roughened hands and the sweat and soot of the smithy about him.
it crosses his mind fleetingly that perhaps the princess does long for those things, head full of stories as hers is. but it's so ridiculous that he dismisses it immediately; she's clever enough to know those desires belong strictly in fantasy.
"even the soundest of minds may be, from time to time, mistaken," felix retorts. "or led purposely astray by those with..." his lip curls, his pointed gaze cataloging the length of henry's face and body before returning, finally, to meet his eyes (eyes like the sea on a summer's day. clear and blue, but deadly to the unwitting). "... baser desires." is beaumont goading him on purpose, or does he simply believe himself above retaliation? the set of his shoulders and the glint in his eye suggest that he has never, not once, faced any consequence. "unless you don't find the princess beautiful?—" he smirks. ha. got you now, haven't i, boy?
