To all my freshman babies who are panicking right now about how much your college textbooks cost: Yeah, you’re right, that’s some highway robbery. No, you don’t have to lie down and take it. You have options. Follow my advice and fly on your own debt free wings.

1. Forgoe the bookstore entirely. Sometimes you can get a good deal on something, usually a rental, but it’s usually going to be considerably more expensive to go through official channels. Outsmart them, babies.

2. Does your syllabus call for edition eight? Get edition seven. Old editions are considered worthless in the buyback trades, so they sell for dirt cheap, no matter how new they are. It’s a gamble, sure; there might be something in edition eight you desperately need, but that never happened to me. However, I’ve only ever pulled this stunt for literature/mass comm/religious studies books, so I don’t know it would work in the sciences.

3. Thriftbooks.com, especially for nonfiction and fiction. Books are usually four or five dollars unless they’re really new, and shipping is 99 cents unless you buy over 10$ in books, in which case shipping is free.

4. Bigwords.com. It will scan every textbook seller on the internet for the lowest price available, and will do the same to find the highest price when you try to sell your books back at the end of term. Timesaver, lifesaver.

5. In all probability, your library offers a service called interlibrary loan which is included in your tuition. This means if your library doesn’t carry a book you can order it for free from any library nationwide in your library’s network and it will be shipped to you in a number of days. Ask a librarian to show you how to search for materials at your library as well as though interlibrary loan; you’ll need to master this skill soon anyway. If you get lucky you can just have your required reading shipped to you a week before you need to start reading, then renew vigorously until you no longer need to item. I’m saving over 100$ on a History of Islam class this way.

You professors might side-eye you for bringing an old edition or a library copy, but you just smile right back honey, because you can pay your rent and go clubbing this month. You came here to win. So go forth and slay.

Can I add to this? 6. Find PDFs of your book to store on your computer. I managed to find an up-to-date edition of my textbook for sociology by doing this, and other books for other classes. It may be risky to have to look high and low for them, but it’s a godsend trust me

don’t even think about pulling number 1 for math classes. they change problems and examples between editions. get your butt to Amazon the SECOND you know what book you need. the earlier the better. put in the ISBN number and you’ll get the right edition. buy it used. you don’t need that damn CD. buy it used. I used to get two hundred dollar math books for twenty bucks.

for the record I would recommend a lot of caution with math/science/psych books, the editions generally have a lot of changes to them (also email your professors; I had one explicitly tell us to buy an older edition bc the publisher made a new one every year regardless of if there were any changes. and they understand books cost a lot so they’re generally on board with you saving money; another professor actually had a student who managed to get a free pdf of the textbook share it with the whole class)

one time i tried to get a previous edition for a humanities class and there were like 10+ stories that weren’t included that the teacher referenced often so make sure that there’s not a huge discrepancy in content also if your uni uses ~custom textbooks~ like mine does for entry level courses then you my friend are fucked

How to study like a straight A student

I did really well during my first year of college, and aside from a B+ in statistics (which was really good for me, haha! I’m not good at math), I had A’s in all of my classes. I’m certain that the reason I did so well was due to the way that I figured out how to study, so here are some tips I have based on what I did to study this past year!

1. Sit in the front row.

This isn’t high school anymore, it’s not embarrassing or nerdy to sit in the front row. By sitting in the front row, you won’t be tempted to check your phone and you won’t be distracted by looking at the people around you. I focus best in the front row. This also gives you a chance to easily ask any questions you have.

2. Show up to class a little early.

Show up to class about five minutes early every day, if possible. During the time it takes your professor to get set up, read through your previous notes. If you do this every day, you’ll begin to memorize info that you certainly wouldn’t have learned if you spent those five minutes before class just scrolling through tumblr.

3. Type your notes and print them out.

If you prefer to spend a lot of time on hand written notes, then go crazy. However, I don’t really have time to make aesthetic notes, so I prefer to just write my notes by hand during class, then copy them into microsoft word so I can organize and print them out. This makes the notes much easier to read, and it’s much easier on the eyes.

4. Do every assignment. Yes, EVERY assignment.

I don’t know why there’s advice floating around on tumblr telling people that it’s okay to skip a ton of homework assignments, because I definitely wouldn’t recommend it at all. Of course some assignments might be stupid or seem too small to matter, but if you’re being graded on them, you need all the points you can get. Trust me, just because homework assignments only account for 10-15% of your final grade, that doesn’t mean that they won’t be the difference between a B+ and an A-. Think about it: if your homework is 10% of your grade and you didn’t do it, you would literally have to get NOTHING wrong on your exams just to get the lowest A- possible.

5. Don’t skip. Don’t skip. Don’t skip.

Don’t skip if you can help it. If there is a serious emergency and you really can’t make it, try your hardest to get the best notes you can from someone who was in class. There’s nothing worse than sitting down for a test and realizing that a ton of the questions are about content you missed when you were absent.

6. Go over material in your head when you’re not busy.

If you’re in the shower or waiting in line at the cafe, go over class material in your head. Think about what you learned that day. If you do this often, this will help significantly with retention.

7. Make flashcards throughout the semester, not the night before the final.

Don’t be one of those students who has to relearn an entire textbook the week before finals. If you’re studying right, studying for finals should be relatively painless. Throughout the semester, make flashcards of class content and regularly go over them. The easiest way to do this is to use quizlet.com and fill in definitions and other things you need to know, and use their helpful games and quizzes to memorize the info. It even keeps track of the definitions you rarely get wrong, so you know what you don’t need to study as much.

8. Makes specific agendas for what you need to study and get done.

When I study, I need to have a very specific to-do list detailing exactly what I want to get done. This will motivate you to keep going because you’re able to check off what you’ve already done.

9. Don’t get discouraged by a bad grade- take it as motivation.

This is much easier said than done, but I had to do this in my western civilization class when I very nearly failed the first set of exams. If this happens to you, you should definitely take time to be upset about the grade, but don’t let yourself think it’s the end of the world. If you do badly, at least you know what to expect on the next assignment/exam so you know how to alter your studying to prepare for the next one. You can do it! I started western civ with a high D+ after my first exams, but I pulled out with an A- at the end of the semester!

Strong words to use on a Resume

If you have ever had to write a resume for work or for an application, then you know the hardest part is figuring out what type of words to use that sound professional and and intelligent.

Example: If an application asks you if you have any relevant experience for a job at a day care center and you have experience, like you have babysat children. You would look at the words in the columns to see what words you should use that will help your resume stand out. You might put down “Have supervised and attended to children on a regular basis.”

4 Legal Ways To Get Free Textbooks.

1. Open Culture: Not a large a selection, but high quality texts. If you just want to skim a book to brush up on a course you took in ninth grade, download one of these. I have yet to be disappointed.

2. Book Boon: Provides free college-level textbooks in a PDF format. Probably the widest range of subjects on the web. The site is also pretty.

3. Flat World Knowledge: The worlds largest publisher of free and open college textbooks. Humanitie texts are particularly difficult to come by, this site has a great selection in all disciplines.

4. Textbook Revolution: Some of the books are PDF files, others are viewable online as e-books, or some are simply web sites containing course or multimedia content.

5. Library Pirate: I’ve always had an addiction to torrent based pirating. When this site opened a few months ago, I went a little overboard. After dropping two hundred on a paperback spanish textbook, I downloaded the ebook version illegally. I also got a great Psyc text i’m obsessed with. It will be interesting to see how this site grows- they already have a great selection.

Free Online Course - making full use of free resources

This week I will be talking about the benefits of online courses, and listing out couple of sites that provide amazing free online courses from great universities.

So, the advantages of these online courses…

For the most obvious - it is free. I mean, what is better than freely access courses in amazing universities like Harvard, UCB and more?

For high school students - it’s a great way for you to find your interest and think about what you wanna pursue in the future. You may be stuck now thinking, hey, what should i do in uni/college?? Well, you may just as well have a taste of courses in different fields here and see if any of these appeal to you.

For college/uni students - it allows you to learn more, and widen your perspective (and help you to get a better gpa?). There may be courses that you are interested at but can’t really take it in college, or there may be courses that is relevant to your field and so you can explore more (which probably may boost your grades)

These courses are super well organised and flexible - they are all scheduled and the courseware is really nice and sufficient - if they are courses that have ended, you can just do it whenever you want to. If they are courses that are going on / about to start - you can either follow the schedule offered or again, just have your own schedule. Basically you can take the course whenever and wherever you want.

Steps to get straight-As

Here’s a few steps to get some perfect straight-As!

Preview your classes: this might sound silly to some of you, but honestly it helps a lot. Try to force yourself to read through your textbook or notes that you know your teacher will be teaching the day before class, so that you can have a slight idea of what’s going to happen tomorrow. Try highlighting the texts, or, if you’re feeling in the mood, do some outlining! Trust me, you will be so much more confident in class and that will also help you to only jot down things that’s not in your textbook. Lazy people are in fact the ones who do the prep work because they want to save time in the future!

Take class notes: Having previewed your class, you’ll realise class is in fact quite fun (shocker here). When your classmates are trying so hard to copy everything down from the powerpoints, you only have to write down things that aren’t included in your notes/textbooks. And, since you should have figured out the things you didn’t understand the night before, you can pay more attention on those parts during class, or even ask your teachers about it!

Outline Notes: When you’re home after school (preferably) or during the weekend, try to combine your class notes and textbooks together and make your perfect outline notes. Do your outline notes after every class instead of waiting till your teacher finishes a chapter/section. It will help you to keep track of your classes!

Study guides: After a chapter/section, it’s good to narrow it down to a nice and simple study guide. Try to omit information that’s already in your brain from your outline notes and reorganize it into a study guide. The whole process will help you to review the knowledge once again and at the same time give yourself some good source for studying for finals.

Index cards: this should be the last step. I usualy prepare index cards when I’m studying for a test. Before the test, I will use my study guide to study, and write down key information (either some main points or parts that I can hardly remember) onto the index cards. The night before/ the morning before the test, the only thing I’m holding is my index cards. So while all your pals are holding their large pile of notes and cramming in the hallways, you can confidently walk with only some cards!

In that case, you’ve basically gone through the same knowledge five times (wow). Honestly though, it doesn’t take much time each and trust me, you’re going to benefit from it SO MUCH MORE! It’s only a matter of habit! Good luck!

!!! do not pay for your textbooks if you don’t have to !!! even if you aren’t down with illegally downloading your books, you can waste hundreds of dollars on textbooks you will never open. wait until your professor says that you’ll need it or if material from the book will be on an exam just wait it’s what harry styles would do probably

everyone says this but /please/ do extra credit if you can! it could mean the difference between a b+ and an a and that hurts more than the 1542th time you hear someone singing “let it go” in public

if you’re like me and you find it completely impossible to make friends in college, at least try and have one homie in each class so if you miss a class, you have someone to tell you what you missed and let you copy notes. having this homie is also beneficial for group work bc homies help homies always (important life lessons from adventure time)

if you’re in a productive mood, take advantage of it. i was feeling v scholarly one day and ended up finishing all my assignments until the end of the quarter almost a month early beyonce would be proud

seriously just use google scholar instead of google if you’re doing something for a grade don’t be that loser who gets a bad grade over your sources

keep a journal it is v helpful bc even if you don’t write, you can fill it with art stuff and just kind of let your feelings out and be creative about it /or/ if you don’t feel artistic, you can write! whether it’s creative writing or just talking about your day, it’s gr8

if there is anything that you know will always improve your mood or make you feel better, take advantage of it. for me, this stand up is called weirdo and it’s by one of my favorite people in the world and almost three years after the release and dozens of viewings later, i still think it’s the funniest thing i have ever seen

you are more important than anything in the world pls don’t ever put yourself in a bad situation for any reason ever, even if that means taking a day off for yourself

if there is anyone in your life who doesn’t think of you as highly as kayne thinks of himself then that person doesn’t deserve to be in your life you don’t need them
