Emos & scene kids got this close to abolishing gender for real. I try not to think about it too much.

The idea of a popular teenage subculture where girl & boys pretty much all dress the same feels impossible now but for a while it was reality and it was beautiful.

They didn't though? Emo-revival get on this now ty, but this just wasn't the case. Emo boys were gayer and more feminine for sure. (for 2k standards. skinny body, skinny jeans, eyeliner, mid-length hair. one earring and you couldn't run from the homophobia and misogyny because ew feminine) But there were pretty strong differences in how emo/scene girls dressed compared to boys? In clothes, make-up, accessories, hair styles. just look at pictures from that time. How the look is reinterpreted today is not how people actually dressed back then. I think like with most other styles it's easy for a woman to wear the 'masculine version' and have it be a 'gender neutral' look. but nobody was walking around dressing like an emo-girl / scene-girl as a boy. and the actual scene so misogynistic like :I this is a rose-colored look into the past type of situation. the binary was still the binary.
