The painting has 4 figures around a tomb that has the Latin Ensciption “Et in Arcadia ego” which mean “Even in Arcadia, I am there” which people have theorized “I” being death, unclear if death means the concept of the person in the tomb

Arcadia is also a region in Greece which was seen as the mythological birthplace of the Greek God Hermes. He was the herald of the gods. He is also widely considered the protector of human heralds, travelers, thieves, merchants, and orators.. Hermes was also seen as a courier of souls to the afterlife
