what surprised you in anatomy?
share anything fun you learned or just wildly inaccurate conceptions you had!
i always thought that ovaries were approximately the size of a fist. turns out they literally look like a bean.
i also keep thinking that the carpal bones are in the palm. carpals + metacarpals = shape of hand, so…
Not me, but a class mate of mine was super surprised (confused) about the size of physiological lymph nodes. When I had to dissect the testicle she came up to me and asked very enthusiastically “ohhhhhhh is this a lymph node?”
Not in anatomy, but in surgical rotations.
I was paired up with a stereotypical type A medical student who believed wholeheartedly he knew the most about anatomy and was "explaining" and commenting incorrectly through the procedures to a few other students.
During a hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, he decides to point out internal organs incorrectly. After the extraction of the uterus, he confidently turns to us and identifies it as an ovary and I correct him politely.
He insists and looks for support with the surgeon, who in turn told him he needed to review his basic anatomy and instructed him observe more and talk less.
He stayed silent for the rest of that day and the surgeon told me to go ahead and describe the procedures.
