me and the very lovely @llyn-on-ice are collaborating on a story about yuuri being sick in bed and his beautiful skater family trying(and failing) to help him feel better
this is officially PART 1 tune in for more!!
How different languages work in Yuri!!! On Ice
Other than being endearingly heartwarming and setting my OTP feels ablaze, one of the best parts about this scene (as another post points out) is that Victor has no idea what Yuri said.
Thereâs confusion among fandom regarding whether or not Victor knows Japanese and what his primary communication language is. So on Twitter this morning I shot off a few tweets about how languages are handled in YoI and Iâm coming here to explain myself more fully.Â
Since episode 2, Iâve been completely in love with the voice direction given to Suwabe-san that helps demonstrate Victorâs foreign-ness via auditory cues. Of course, itâs not going to be readily apparent to non-Japanese speakers, but it definitely stands out to the native speaking audience.Â
Basically, whenever Victor is âspeaking Japanese,â his speech is foreigner-accented. His pronunciation is off in places and the rhythm isnât that of a native or solidly fluent japanese speaker. The sentences are a bit less complex as well. My favorite example of this is from episode 3, when he was in full gaijin mode lol.
Anyway, when Victor is speaking a language that heâs fluent in (likely English with Yuri Katsuki or Russian with Yuri Plisetsky), Suwabe-san drops the âforeigner-accentâ and delivers the lines fluidly.Â
The best example of the âlanguage switchâ, perhaps, is in episode 4 when Yuri calls Coach Celestino. Celestino also has a foreigner-accent when speaking to Yuri at first, but then when Victor gets on the phone Celestinoâs accent drops and he too speaks fluidly.Â
So, an Italian-American and a Russian speaking to each otherâŚ? English is 99.9% likely to be their common language.Â
And just to clarify, thereâs no continuity error regarding language in the scenes from episode 2 when Victor goes to Minako-sensei and the Nishigoris to get more information about Yuri. He has no foreigner accent in these scenes as well, so heâs speaking in a language heâs fluent in. But we know now that Yuko-chan speaks English fluently and itâs likely that Minako-sensei does too since she had an international ballet career.Â
tl;dr version
When Victor speaks Japanese he sounds like a foreigner and native/fluent Japanese speakers will pick up on that change.
Victor and Yuri are communicating with each other in English. (Smooth, complex conversation with no accenting.)
Victor maybe has rudimentary Japanese skills, but not enough for him to understand or participate in complex discussions. (Example: ep 4, when he has to ask Yuri what everyone is talking about.)
Every person Victor has had an in-depth conversation with so far has good English skills.Â
And an injection from realityâ most high level international athletes use English as a commonality language anyway.Â
I love this meta and I love these details and I love this show.
Also, remember that Yuri lived in America for five years and graduated from an American university. Heâs definitely fluent in English.
Guys, Colin Mochrieâs daughter is transgender. Itâs so amazing and heartwarming to see celebrities accept and be vocal about their trans loved ones. Itâs a reminder for myself and other trans people that we are not alone. There is love in the world. Just another reason to love Colin Mochrie đđ
Imagine Yuri on Ice but with more filler episodes like Katsukiâs birthday or Victorâs birthday or otayuri having a friend date or Chris and mystery guy or just Yuri plisetsky playing with his cat for an entire episode

note to my future partner: unexplained phenomena themed wedding. save the date says CONFIRMED with a grainy photo of us, each in the classic bigfoot pose, holding hands
Sometimes I see girls with arm muscles and I combust
I asked one of my (male) friends to stop using the phrase âman upâ and he has been using âfortifyâ for the past two weeks instead and itâs just a little thing but honestly it makes a difference
and tbh itâs also pretty funny when I start to deflate in the library and he leans over and goes âFORTIFYâ
Dude, fortify is banginâ. That makes things like youâre some kind of RPG character. Fortify is way better than âman up.â
I like this. This is dope.
Make this a thing!!
Yeah
Can we talk about Moriarty who always chooses a proper soundtrack for every special event?

You know, two characters disliking each other doesnât mean underlying sexual tension. Sometimes people canât stand each other, and thereâs damn good reasons for it. Constantly reducing a characterâs valid reasons for hating someone to âsexual chemistryâ or hidden feelings to justify your ship is side-eye worthy, and questionable at best. Cut that shit out.Â
Just think about someone you dislike in real life.
I refuse to believe you have sexual tension with everyone you dislike in real life. Sometimes you just really dislike someone.
Further tales from my brotherâs DnD adventures: one of his friends had a character that was two gnomes in a trench coat. Even the DM didnât know (despite the playerâs comment that his character had abnormally short arms, and his penchant for asking WHERE enemies had landed a hit) until one of them died.
I love having sexâŚ. On grand theft auto !omg what were u perverts thinking hahahaâŚ
I thought you meant real life omg!
WHAT IS THIS GAME
Sorry but there is no way I could have voice acted this and not lost my shit
#this shouldâve been nominated for an award. idk what award but just. give it something
