You're asexual? But...
ābut sex is what makes us human!ā
Ā in 1916 a French officer in his twenties writes his
doctoral dissertation under
heavy mortar fire.
he sends it by mail, a page
at a time, to his wife.
a week before heās to step up to the podium and
defend his work rather than hiscountry
he is killed in action.
even as the bullets rip
through him he still wishes he could have become a professor
in French literature and
the university awards him a posthumous Ph.D.
sex is
Ā a woman breaks down in tears on the phone because
a week is not enough time to
get over a breakup.
her sister drives an hour across town,
comes up the front steps with
a gallon of ice cream and somebeer
and together they eat moose tracks and marathon
every
single
Godzilla movie
ever made.
Ā sex is
sheās late for work but her car isnāt
starting and even through her coat and hat sheās cold.
she knows she canāt be late again because sheās missed
one time too many already because her
fatherās nurse was sick with the flu and someone
needed to help him bathe.
the clock ticks past fifteen after and she hits
the wheel like itās a heavy bag as though that will help
steps on the gas like the car will go
and wonders how she will pay rent
and how she will feed her father.
sex is
Ā it takes three people to hold the predator down because
even with the cover over his head
a bleeding eye and shattered wing
he is trying to hurt them.
none of them have seen this bird before in their lives but
they bandage his wing and head and give him a painkiller and
put him in a warm place to sleep and heal because
it is right.
at first he is paralyzed and cannot
fly but soon he is taking steps
and then fluttering, and then soaring, and
six months later he is whole and healed and hunting.
once he is gone they never see him again
which means theyāve done their jobs right.
sex is
Ā in 1969 a girl watches grey-and-white footage on her parentsā tiny television and
canāt quite believe that what she is seeing is not a movie set but
another planet.
the men on the screen look a little like
aliens with bulbous heads and no faces and fat
marshmallow arms
but they are still men.
her mother puffs on a cigarette behind her and declares that
this is progress
even if it was just a small step.
the girl grows up to be not an astronaut but a secretary
and her boss calls her āsweetheartā.
but sex is
Ā a boy is taught that real men donāt cry so
he doesnāt.
when his best friend dies from a self-inflicted
gunshot wound, he locks himself
in the shower every day and sobs under scalding
water until it runs cold
so nobody will see him grieving
so nobody will see that tears are just love that
has no place left to go.
he learns to dull love rather than suppress its expression and
soon the owner of the liquor store knows him by name.
three DUIs, two evictions, and twelve steps later,
he is feeding people at a homeless shelter,
and telling them itās all right to cry.
Sex is
Ā the broken man tells the comedian
that he didnāt mean to step in front of the car but the rain
made it hard to see.
he seems okay but his leg
does not.
the comedian clutches a grubby receipt with the driverās
plate number scrawled on the back
in pink pen, stands out in the rain so the broken man
can have his umbrella,
and gives him the comedy routine that ruined his career
so the man doesnāt think about the pain in his leg.
once heās out of the hospital, the fixed man sends him a thank-you card
with kittens on it.
what makes us human
Ā yawning is contagious,
and there is a species of bird whose young we call āpufflingsā.
melodic collections of sound, spaced by silence,
can move us to tears.
the tallest building in the world is
two-thousand seven-hundred and seventeen feet tall.
in less than eighty years we went from our first powered flight
to touching the moon,
and in one-hundred from the first phone call
to instantaneous connection between thinking machines of our own creation.
we make pies out of tree organs
and let cowās milk ferment until it hardens and then
we put them together, because apple pie with cheddar cheese is delicious.
what makes us human is
the earliest fossils of anatomically modern humans are
two-hundred thousand years old .
we have had pet dogs
for sixteen-thousand of those years, longer
than corn
or the wheel.
the steps we take are part of
one of the most energy-efficient gaits the
animal kingdom has ever seen.
we invented the concepts of love
and hate
and justice, and mercy
and we invented the language to convey them.
we sharpened rocks, then metal, to convince other people
who donāt hold the same idea of those things as we do
because we think
itās right.
we are two hundred millennia of love and disappointment and
sorrow and innovation and
mercy and kindness and dreams
and failure
and recovery.
but sex is what makes us human.

Why can nothing go my way right now? Last week, I had to fix our air conditioner ($450). This week, our hot water heater died and I havenāt called yet to ask about replacing it since itās only 4 years old, but if I have to buy a new one, that will be another $400.
Like, when do I get to catch a break? I just wanted to relax and enjoy my summer, and paint. Now I donāt know how Iām going to make my car payment in 2 weeks.
Update: new water heater is installed. Letās hope things change for the better now.

Literary facts:
The premise of the second part of Don Quixote is that the protagonist is on a quest to beat up a guy who wrote an unflattering fanfic about him
The Tale of Genji contains a chapter with no text to reflect the fact that the viewpoint character has just died
At one point the framing narrative of Frankenstein develops into a dude telling a story about a dude telling a story about a dude telling a story
No significant recurring characters appear within the first 25 000 words of Les MisĆ©rables, the textās first fourteen chapters being occupied with a detailed biography of a priest who subsequently appears in one scene
In its authorsā notes, The Princess Bride claims to be an abridged edition of a 16th Century political satire that the editorās grandfather once read to him as a bedtime story; the movie is in turn purportedly based on this bedtime story version (which appears nowhere in the published text), making it an adaptation of a fictitious abridgement of a nonexistent novel
This just reminded me that you can write whatever you want in whatever way you want and I love that
Have you ever wondered where books come from?
Well then, let me show you, because thatās what I do for a living.
Right now, itās this time of the year, and the little ones have just freshly hatched:
Youāll notice theyāre still blind and naked when they hatch. So I make them little coats to keep them warm during their first winter:
See how they happily line up to put them on:
See? Better. Now theyāre ready to go and explore the world.
And if they make it through the winter and we take good care of them, they will grow up to be strong and wise like their older fellows:
So, in case you were ever wondering, now you know.
As a Publishing Professional I can say that this is 10000% accurate, and I am a little concerned youāre just giving away all of our industry secrets on Tumblr.
I am a famousy awards-winning author of BOOKS and I endorse this post.
Iāve seen this post 800 times and am only now realising that Neil Gaiman endorsed this post

Ravenclaw: I love the ocean!

Ravenclaw: Shush, it can hear you!
harry potter, surprising literally everyone, retires from being an auror to make ceramics in a cottage in the hills.Ā āi donāt know,ā the boy who lived said in a statement.Ā ābecoming a potter just seemed right, you know?ā

A different kind of friendship
at what point in history do you think americans stopped having british accents
Actually, Americans still have the original British accent. We kept it over time and Britain didnāt. What we currently coin as a British accent developed in England during the 19th century among the upper class as a symbol of status. Historians often claim that Shakespeare sounds better in an American accent.
whAT THE FUCK
Iām too tired for this
Always add in the video that according to linguists, Native southern drawl is a slowed down British.
Tā be or not tābe, yāall.
Fun fact: Same thing happened with the French accent. French Canadians still have the original French accent from the 15th century.
Ćtāe ou nāpĆ“ zĆŖtāe, vous zāauts.
Iāve been trying to find this post for months. Iām freakishly obsessed with this and want the truth of what early colonists sounded like.
They sounded like cowboys apparently
So does that mean whenever an American is cast for a period piece set in Colonial America or Britain, thatās actually more historically accurate than casting a British actor?
Whā¦.
The accents of New England states (New York and Massachusetts are the most iconic of that category) developed after England changed their accent because they had thriving port towns that had daily interactions with English sailors
Iāll never forget my semester in England, taking a Shakespeare adaptations class, watching different versions of the plays, the Professor brought this up one day, āDo you want to know who sounds the most like Shakespeare in this class?ā Pointed at me.

i saw a couple posts about this but i want to reiterate the point that you dont have to have some dramatic coming out story.Ā
you dont have to have a ācoming out storyā at all.
i said to my momĀ āi think im transgenderā in an american eagle dressing room after months of already trying to present as masc and expressing gender confusion. she bought me new jeans and we went home and i guess she told my dad.
i started going to an lgbt youth group shortly thereafter and the first time i attended i didnt have a new name picked so when they asked me i literally made one up on the spot. when my dad picked me up he saw theĀ āhi my name isā sticker on my shirt and thats how my family was informed of my new name. the name i ultimately decided on and changed to legally i chose after some considerable thought, but i went by that name for a year and a half, and thats the name my parents still call me a lot as a nickname.
if you had theĀ āmom, dad, iām gayā talk and there were lots of tears and tissues that is your experience and by that fact alone it is an important story to tell. but stories that dont follow that formula and dont have some dramatic climax or make-or-break point are just as important and just as valid.
The road to self-acceptance and mustering up the courage to come out is already a tremendously intensive mental battle for most of us and ought to be recognized just as much.
I think itās important that we push the positive coming out narrative a bit more. There are many coming out stories that cause incredible fear, especially among youngsters in the LGBTQ+ community. Horrible coming out experiences are real and it is not my intention to shove positive experiences in the faces of people who have had negative experiences and make them feel bad about it. All experiences, bad ones, neutral ones, and good ones matter and will guide others in the coming-out story that they have yet to write. It is vital for the flourishing of gay souls all around the world that we bring a more balanced view on the coming out experience. You know the people best to who you wish to come out to and how they would most likely react. Here are some āpositiveā coming out experiences:
I already knew my family is hella supportive of everything lgbtq. we were making fajitas (like the 4 of us crammed into our kitchen and chopping vegetables) and I blurted āhey so Iām biā and my mum literally went āyeah we already had that figured out babeā and I almost cut myself in the finger
This very much made me smile
*minor inconvenience*
