George Brown College students call for new residence to be named after the Blackburns [Toronto] – Today, students at George Brown College (GBC) are calling on the GBC administration to name the new student residence building after Thornton and Lucie Blackburn.

“After speaking with students today, it is now clear that many students are calling for their new residence building to be named after the Thornton and Lucie Blackburn,” said Geneve Gray, Director of Finance & Operations of the Student Association of George Brown College.

The Blackburns were slaves from Kentucky who risked everything in order to make it to Toronto to have a better life in 1833. After arriving in Toronto, the Blackburns were instrumental members of Toronto’s early history where they founded the first cab business in Upper Canada, provided assistance to African American refugees escaping slavery, and were strong community builders in our city.

Thornton Blackburn was a contemporary of the College’s namesake, George Brown and together they helped build the anti-slavery movement here in Toronto. The site of the new residence building overlooks where the Blackburns home once stood and it is not far from the Little Trinity Church, where the Blackburns were among the founders. In 1999, the Blackburns were designated “Persons of National Historical Significance” by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

“Given Thornton and Lucie Blackburn’s contributions to the social and economic life of Toronto and their connection to George Brown, it would only be fitting to name George Brown College’s new residence after the Blackburns in order to maintain and defend Toronto’s rich and diverse history,” said Gray. “Especially since George Brown College’s new residence is being built with public money, it is important to name the building after these historical figures that contributed so much to Toronto.”

More than 15 influential Canadians, historians and heritage societies have supported the call to name this new residence after the Blackburns. Individuals include the Hon. David Crombie, Toronto’s 56thMayor; the Hon. William Davis, Ontario’s 18th Premier; the Hon. Jean Augustine, Ontario’s Fairness Commissioner; and Phillip Crowley, Publisher of the Globe and Mail.

The Student Association of George Brown College represents more than 20,000 students at George Brown College.
