“ cookies would be good in a gift basket, right ? ” needed to send something to a couple of people, options of wine and crackers for one, some charcuterie for another, but she didn't want to send doubles of anything. “ everybody likes cookies ? ” a nice, soft chocolate chip cookie and a huge glass of milk and a nap sounded like heaven. “ am i projecting ? should i do the seasonings basket ? ”

“who's it for?” elliot was nosy, sue him. if that gossip blog and apparently all of new york could be in his business, it was well within reason that he could be in everyone else's. “and, no. no one likes gift baskets.” he picked at his nails as his interest began to wane. “why don't you get them courtside tickets to the knicks game or something? now that's a gift.”
“ did you like kinda hate it, too ? ” she says in a conspiratorial whisper. “ i was like am i stupid or is this movie not making any sense at all ? i don’t know, i thought it was weird. but like, i thought that about after hours. you know the one by scorsese? ” jia would've never remembered the name if she hadn't met his daughter once. “ so, yeah, maybe this’ll be one of those deep cut movies that get a cult following years from now. ”
“i kind of hated it,” she whispered back, her face scrunching up as if the bullshit film actually radiated a stench. josie could see the director in the distance, but couldn't work up the courage to strike up a conversation. in a job that required quite a bit of honesty, she never could hide when something disappointed her. “scorsese won at cannes for that, but this one would sooner win a razzie. are you going to the q&a? i don't know if i could sit through the director talking about how they're a misunderstood genius, if we're being honest.”

“pretty nice spot, don’t you think?” elliot waved at the runners passing by, though they didn’t return the favour. it was a busy afternoon, but it was nice to have his little piece of paradise in central park. what a shame if anyone were to ruin it. “i’m thinking of running a science fair right here, sponsored by my company. something for the growing minds of new york.” elliot looked around before turning to the person next to him. “or, build a starbucks. a wework campus, maybe. you have any connections to the mayor?”

by the fourth hour, elliot couldn’t tell one red-faced, millionaire investor from the other. it was how things went at these conferences and he’d rather have spent the day shuffling paperwork than listen to the endless drone of keynote speakers. as if on schedule, elliot spotted a familiar face in the crowd and put a hand on julian’s shoulder just as he was passing by. “how’s it going, julian? looking good,” he lied, barely giving the other man a onceover. “you here for your start-up? i heard news about it here and there. some hybrid tech shit, right?”

“can you believe they tried to blacklist me from this? you call someone stupid one time.” elliot took a shot before he passed another to the person next to him. in all honesty, stupid was putting it lightly. after someone on the team called him a stuck-up snob at a press conference, that gossip blog was all too eager to report on elliot’s tirade in the aftermath. “so, i called up the owner and they put me on the guest list. fuck them for trying to keep me out. here’s to the knicks, i guess. you know anyone on the team?”

“cut!” assistants crowded josie as she flipped through the script, checking their phones to see that the shoot had gone well over than it was supposed to. the producer on set insisted that the scene was fine and she repaid the compliment with a tight smile. still, josie wasn’t ready to wrap just yet. no, not until it was perfect. the higher-ups could complain as much as they wanted, but she had too much on the line to let the film be just fine. “ryan, take a look at this. it’s just coming off as a little stiff. can you do something about this dialogue? i know it’s in the books, but i’m ready to cut the scene if we can’t get it right.”

location: a speakeasy in manhattan
josie had elbowed her way back to their table with drinks barely in hand. most of it had spilled as she squeezed herself between bar patrons taking up the room. did places like this really count as a speakeasy when half of new york knew about it? “back home, we’d be lucky to get 10 people out in the pub on a friday night,” she complained over the loud music. “i miss the peace and quiet sometimes, you know?”

“that was… creative,” josie settled on as she lingered in the lobby of the theater. working on a film was no easy feat and she’d always admired when someone was able to put themselves out there, but it was hard to make sense of what she just sat through. somehow, it was too experimental even for josie. “what do i know? maybe we’re watching the next spielberg in the making. god, i hope i'm not coming off as an asshole. what did you think?”
axe flipped in hand as she looked at the target, hand eye coordination something she had always prided herself on, yet had someone told her just a few days prior that she would be wielding an object that wasn't a scalpel, she would have laughed. a rare occasion indeed, though skills needed to be honed somehow on this vacation. arm lifted, wrist drawing back to throw when silence, and concentration, was interrupted. “ unless you want to end up on an operating table , i suggest you go away. ”
elliot watched as, one after another, axes swung off their target only to land at the base of the boards. of course he wasn't there to actually participate. no, instead he gave a pitiful applause to the other axe throwers who returned the favour with angry looks. leaning against the fence, he held his breath as he waited for the doctor to take her turn. “and have you ruin all this?” with that, elliot swept a hand down towards his feet as if to make his point. “i have no doubt you can make that shot, by the way. you're a doctor, right? i heard you were supposed to be good with your hands.”

“ and why has that happened more than once ? ” max cannot help the enjoyment that laces his words , a subtle grin appearing around the rim of his glass . “ it sounds like you're tempting fate to me . ” hums lowly , finally swigging his drink . soothing the soul , or just habit ... he doesn't care to distinguish the difference . “ i get it , though . ” another gaze upon the spectacle around them before settling back on elliot . “ new york is ... something ... but a little break isn't the worst . ”
“these people hate me and i have no idea why. i'm completely innocent." elliot put a hand to his heart, shameless as ever. even he knew that wasn't true. turns out that when you make a habit of pissing off rich assholes, you make a few enemies along the way. to be fair, it surprised him when he received the invitation to germany in the first place when he'd been blacklisted by half of new york. “yeah, well, that isn't stopping them from blowing up my phone. i don't know. maybe it's time for a career change. you looking for an extra hand with your team?
“ nope, ” ryan says bluntly, trying to focus on the stage play. not that it's particularly exciting — just a typical rendition of shakespeare, no fun twists or anything. still, she'd take an average play over talking about work while on holiday, especially with josie of all people. “ maybe you'd have less issues if you just took a break for what it is, ” she adds, because being disingenuous is her favourite hobby and having siblings makes one very good at it. “ but sure, i'll read over it eventually. maybe tomorrow. maybe next week. these things can't be forced. ” which is, funnily enough, why her editor also doesn't like ryan much. there's this thing called deadlines, anderson, you could try adhering to them, she can her the voice in her head that sounds exactly like her editor saying.
it was moments like these that reminded josie what a joy it was to work with someone like ryan anderson. the complete dismissal of her hard work. the passive aggressive bullshit. the stick up her ass that josie would love to shove even farthe—"i just think the faster we can get this done, the better," she answered, barely biting back the disdain in her voice. “but, by all means, take your time." lady capulet was on stage calling for blood, but josie watched with a satisfied smile knowing that she, at the very least, didn't resort to blows with the author. no, she was the picture perfect image of grace and poise. “by the way, i don't have issues, ryan. clearly, you have issues.” well, so much for taking the high road.
adorable to someone not concerned for her health, maybe : but londen would be the one that would have to fight off a baby goat should something happen to turn for the worst. side glance given to the food offered that had miracle shooting back off in the opposite direction again, the giggles she gave the only reason a smile cracked londen’s features. “ i wouldn’t be surprised if someone has already attempted it. i doubt that the workers are able to pay enough attention when they’re that deep in the woods ... unless they’re hiding somewhere close by that we can’t see. ”
“hiding? please don't freak me out. it's bad enough that i think those portraits in the main hall are watching me whenever i walk by." josie crossed her arms and looked towards the castle, still in awe that she was there in the first place. if only people back home could see her now in a frilly dress feeding baby goats next to ceos. “what have you two seen around the castle so far? i'm just saying that if miracle doesn't tire herself out here, you could send her over for swordfighting lessons.”
she doesn't realize that she's trailed off mid sentence, hues locked on the toddler attempting to run back and forth with the smaller bunch of the animals in the zoo until she releases the breath that she'd been holding. “ sorry. i'm not sure why she's waited until now to keep trying to send me to an early grave. ” no sense of fear, only wanting to find the next shiniest thing that caught her attention, and londen was certain that by the time they left she'd have to have made every stuffed animal that the booth had so that miri wouldn't throw a colossal fit. “ what were we talking about ? uh … right, anyway. have you seen any of the animatronics yet ? they're disney level worthy. ”
josie let out a small laugh seeing how the animals trailed behind the toddler, leading them from one end of the fence to the other. back when she was her age, the only thing chasing josie around was her sister with a worm on a stick. “are you kidding? it's adorable. miri is living every kid's dream right now." holding her hand out, she'd offered the breadcrumbs she was holding over to the toddler before turning her attention back to londen. "i have and it's freaky how good they are. i give it a couple of hours before some weirdo tries to ride the unicorn."

location: castle grounds, watching a stage play
the crowd was captivated by the actors on stage doing a fairly decent performance of romeo and juliet. josie, watching from afar, couldn't seem to focus with ryan just a few feet away. she promised herself that she wouldn't work when she wasn't on set, but that was easier said than done. “did you see the rewrites? i asked some guy dressed like a gnome to drop it off at your door,” she said after finally working up the courage to go up to her. “i think it reads as more grounded now, you know?”

“ if someone back home could see this , what do you think they'd say ? ” glass rests loose in his hand , something bordering a smile tugging at the corners of his lips . gaze drifts over the grounds to bare witness to silk , jewels and exaggerated elegance . “ the get up is quite comfy , i can't lie . i think my sisters would laugh in my face . ”
“some bullshit about class inequality and guillotines,” he deadpanned, reaching for his drink. everyone might have been charmed by the frilly lace and silk, but elliot found it hard to enjoy himself so far from home. he was a modern man, after all. what use did he have for the renaissance fantasy? “i can't wait to go back to new york. i swear to god they are aiming at my head whenever i walk by the archery range.”
⋆˚࿐ [ olivia cooke, cis woman, she + her ] hey, i think i just served JOSIE MCCALL ! you mean the THIRTY4 year old SCREENWRITER AND DIRECTOR known for their ENDLESS KITSCHY GRAPHIC SHIRTS FOUND THRIFTED AT OVERPRICED MARKUPS AND HAND-ME-DOWNS BORROWED FROM HER MOTHER’S WARDROBE ? no way, what did they order ? LABATT BLUE. wow, no surprise for someone whose garnered a reputation for being INDEPENDENT AND GUARDED. i heard the hostess say they were being targeted by @ROBINHOOD because of CRITICS PANNING HER LATEST TELEVISION ADAPTATION. maybe it's just me but it doesn't align with the tabloids screaming about ROADTRIPS TO DEAD-END TOWNS TO ATTEND DEAD-END FILM FESTIVALS IN THE ANCIENT, RUSTED TOYOTA THAT SERVED AS A HOME WHEN YOU’VE RUN OUT OF SOFAS TO CRASH; YOUR FIRST BUSINESS CLASS FLIGHT ON YOUR STUDIO HEAD’S DIME TO CITIES THAT YOU CAN’T PRONOUNCE; THE PRIVATE YACHT IN CANNES WITH CHAMPAGNE THAT COSTS MORE THAN YOUR CHILDHOOD HOME whenever their name comes up. make sure to deliver the drink to the VALMONT MEDIA SUITE ( TABLE 4, DRINK B ) and let’s hope they're a good tipper. if not, i'll happily send in some stories of my own.
★ basics.
full name: josephine mccall-wright. nicknames: jo, josie. date of birth: january 28th, 1992. age: thirty4. zodiac: aquarius. gender and pronouns: cis woman + she/her. hometown: truro, nova scotia. occupation: director, screenwriter, filmmaker. education: bachelor of arts. family ties: valmont media suite.
★ biography.
josie will never grow up. just like the pop punk bands from the early 2000s she still listens to. just like the tamagotchi she keeps clipped to her bags. just like american pie or dazed and confused or sixteen candles. those didn’t age poorly, right?
it wasn’t always that way. no, there was a point when josie couldn’t wait to grow up. living in a one-bedroom apartment shared by two sisters and parents so unhappily in love will do that. her perpetual state of young adulthood actually started when she packed up what little she had and moved out of her small town.
when she wasn’t waiting tables in toronto, you could find her running lights or setting up hair and make-up in productions that barely paid a living wage. her extensive list of credits included music videos for lesser known artists to commercials only ever shown at 3 in the morning. it was all worth it if it meant being on a set. better, if it meant not being in truro.
soon enough, josie was running her own projects with barebones crews and whatever second-hand equipment she could get her hands on. she’d even managed to secure feature presentations at local festivals around canada. just as her imdb starmeter was rising, so were the calls from big-name production companies.
no one saw birdy coming. josie spent years working on the screenplay based on her childhood and it was a miracle that it even saw the light of day. the coming-of-age film follows a teenager navigating a complicated relationship with her mother all while trying to make her mark in her small town before she moves for college.
what started as premieres at small film festivals soon turned into an international theatrical release. josie had come a long way from direct-to streaming, limited release runs with critics praising her as the director to watch. she narrowly lost out on the oscar for best original screenplay that year, but producers were already lining up at her door (no thanks to the academy).
when they offered her anne of green gables, she jumped at the chance to run the miniseries. it was the perfect project to capitalize on her momentum. the oscar might have escaped her, but that emmy felt closer than ever. throughout all this, you might start thinking to yourself: was josie finally growing up?
despite its highly anticipated release, the show was panned by critics. not only did fans call it a sorry attempt at an adaptation, but production had been chaotic from the start. a rotating cast of actors, a script that had been constantly rewritten, and the never-ending complaints of studio interference floated around gossip columns for weeks.
truthfully, josie knows as well as anyone that she simply cracked under the pressure. with everyone waiting for her follow-up to birdy, josie found herself trying to appeal to far too many people for her own good. the series read as a clunky, poorly paced mess of a teen drama–more CW than HBO.
signing up for THE ADAPTATION was a no-brainer. the films were a hit in their own right and audiences were clearly eager for the next installment. it would be the perfect opportunity for josie to get herself back in the good graces of hollywood.
except for that damn author. josie might have only skimmed through the books, but she has a vision. after all, she didn’t get an oscar nomination for nothing. is it so bad that she wants to elevate the source material when it’s so dull?
like a kid in a candy store, josie wants it all. the acclaim and the appeal. to be the indie darling and the blockbuster phenom. spielberg and trier.
all eyes are on the release of her upcoming film, but with so much on the line, it seems that josie still has some growing up to do.
★ extras.
hannah horvath meets liz lemon meets ava daniels.
josie’s done almost everything behind the camera. from music videos to documentaries, there hasn’t been a medium she hasn’t explored. for someone who doesn’t consider herself to be particularly outgoing, she’s pretty well-connected to people in the entertainment industry.
she hasn’t exactly read the books that THE ADAPTATION is based on. at most, she’s skimmed the first few chapters before setting it down on her shelf to collect dust. when asked about it, josie has vague, practiced lines that her agent rehearsed with her.
a sucker for nostalgia bait and happily stuck in arrested development. she loathes listening to anything past 2015. still watches 90s sitcoms as if they haven’t gone out of style ages ago. is it any surprise that her dream is to do a remake of josie and the pussycats?
the valmont media empire stands a pillar in the film community. no way is she screwing up a production under their watch. of course josie is planning to tell them that she’s running the tiniest bit over budget. of course. definitely. eventually.
