One thing that I understood from the Resurrection F saga of Dragon Ball Super was that Gohan essentially learned the same lesson that he cannot slack on his training. I know he learnt the same lesson during the Buu Saga of Dragon Ball Z, but I think this time the lesson stuck.
Here’s the thing I think for why Gohan has this issue, Gohan has this habit of relying on Goku, in the sense that Goku has this ability to surpass any challenge, and rising up to face the fight. Gohan has admired this about his father, combined with his lack of interest in fighting. He believed that as long as Goku and Vegeta from Super onwards are there, they won’t face trouble. But Frieza’s return changed that, because for the first time, even if Goku and Vegeta were there, Frieza was still able to destroy the Earth in desperation resulting in deaths of his family. For the first time, Gohan’s belief was shattered that the presence of Goku and Vegeta will help them overcome any challenge. That combined with Piccolo sacrificing himself again, must have given Gohan the nasty wake-up call that not only he must start training again, but he cannot keep relying on his father and Vegeta to step up every time.
After this saga, Gohan definitely keeps up with his training to some extent, because he doesn’t become as thin as he was then, and the Beast Form awakening in the movie Super Hero.
This is a thought I had on Gohan. You are free to disagree.
