Once I was swimming when a man walked by with his dog. The dog kept stopping and staring at me and the other swimmers. When the man got his dog walking again, I heard him tell the dog, βTheyβre not drowning; you donβt have to save them.β

βWe want the museum to understand that the moai are our family, not just rocks. For us [the statue] is a brother; but for them it is a souvenir or an attraction,β said Anakena Manutomatoma, who serves on the islandβs development commission. βOnce eyes are added to the statues, an energy is breathed into the moai and they become the living embodiment of ancestors whose role is to protect us.β
isnt the point of a museum to preserve history though? id prefer something be in a controlled environment than outside in the elements.
The moai have been standing JUST fine in the open in the island for literal centuries. Believe it or not, the Rapa Nui are NOT stupid; they know their island, how to live in it, and what materials and treatment to those materials do or do not last in the island theyβve called their home for ages. The moai are MADE to be βoutside in the elementsβ.
And preserved for whom? Iβm sure my ancestors wouldnβt feel itβs preservation to have a LIVING piece of their culture stolen by colonizers and kept away from them all this fucking long when I assure you, no one asked for their permission to take it in the first place.
Thatβs not fucking βpreservingβ, thatβs just fucking stealing, and a loss of culture for the Rapa Nui.
Well then my God, every museum in the world should give all their artifacts back to the entitled people who want them.
Damn right they should give back all their STOLEN artifacts. How the fuck are you this fucking stupid that youβd call the people who MADE and are the rightful owners of those artifacts βentitledβ WHEN THE ARTIFACTS BELONG TO THEM AND MUSEUMS

THEM.
Imagine this. Your grandmother has a ring she made. Thereβs a very particular way of making the ring that she employed, one thatβs been handed down through your family line for centuries. Itβs a beautiful ring. One day, when sheβs not home, someone comes into your house, steals the ring, and puts it in a museum. When you ask for it back, they go βbut itβs beautiful! And the technique is one weβve never seen! Surely it belongs somewhere everyone can see it!β And yeah, the ring is beautiful, but itβs important to you because she used to play with it when she would tell you stories. Maybe, if the museum had asked for the ring, allowed you to write the description so it honored your grandmother, given you a choice in the matter, you might have considered donating it. Hell, if they had commissioned a piece from you using the same technique you probably would have been ecstatic to show your familyβs art to the world. But they didnβt. They stole it. And to add insult to injury, they wonβt even admit that they did so. This is what has happened with the Easter Island heads. And this is why they should give them back.
We shouldnβt need a fucking analogy to explain why you donβt steal shit from people, but this is a pretty good one.
Donβt forget the part where you demand they return the ring that was stolen from your house and they call youΒ βentitledβ for trying to exercise your rightful claim to your culture and property.

I FOUND A PICTURE OF JOHN MULANEY IN COLLEGE AND??????? I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS MAN DID COCAINE
HE LOOKS LIKE A LITERAL CHILD??????????
not to be all tumblr buzzkill but this is what I looked like when my drug addiction was at its worst (on the right). And I just wanna say that some illnesses are invisible. Mulaney makes jokes about it now but heβs clearly indicated that this was a problem in the past. I didnβt βlookβ like an addict either. Still an addict. Still suffering. Addiction doesnβt βlookβ like anything and I just want people to know that, because you probably know way more people touched by this than you would think.
Thatβs all bye.
Modern elephants weigh about 5 tons and produce about 20lbs of dung per defecation
Argentinosaurus huinculensis, the biggest land animal ever,Β weighed about 100 tons on the high end. As herbivores, their feces were probably the same consistency as elephants. Therefore we can assume almost the same mass, so a 100 ton Argentinosaurus could produce roughly 400lbs/181kg of feces in one defecation. Letβs say the average saruopodβs anus is about 4m off the ground (comparing with this 2m/6ft human)
Ignoring air resistance and any pushing by the animal, it would take the poop about a second to hit the ground and it would hit the ground atΒ 8.85 m/s or 31.88 km/h. This is aboutΒ 1601.85N of force. It takes about 3000N to break a human neck. So even if you were to lay flat on the ground, the crushing force of the falling dino-rhea wouldnβt be enough to kill you, but it would be quite painful. However, youβre now covered in a 400lbs pile of shit and you will probably suffocate and die. Thanks for coming to my TED talk
This didnβt go where I was expecting

What happens when your familiar gets loose
The fact that the Midwest just got cold enough to kill you in minutes of being outside because of an unprecedented polar vortex means that our planet is now starting to become uninhabitable due to climate change. Weβre going to look back on this moment for a long time to come.
Not to mention climate change starts at the poles so for Midwest zone to be hit is pretty bad.
