when I was a kid I had an old tv in my room that would always turn to unwatchable static in the middle of shows but one night my sister and I were watching Naruto & every time Kakashi was on-screen the static cleared so we were like “hahaha the tv looooves Kakashi.”
I had a Kakashi bookmark so we held it up against the screen as a joke but the static actually cleared up. Mystified, we tried different bookmarks and objects with the same plastic material but nothing else worked, only the Kakashi bookmark.
We ended up taping it to the corner of the screen and it stayed there for 11 years until we moved out. When I was older people would be like “can you move the bookmark off the screen” bc it did sort of block a bit of the view but I would demonstrate the static issue and everyone was always just like “huh. what the hell?? well…alright.”
I had a similar tv! It was a tv with a built in dvd and vcr because it was in college and I’m apparently old now. But! The dvd player never wanted to play- unless it was Chicago (2002). First, we would put that dvd in, let it start, and then swap it for the movie we really wanted to watch. It got to the point where we would put in the dvd we wanted and sing “he had it coming!!!” At the screen at volume. Fucking worked *every time*
We had a Coke machine in the lobby that would never take your first dollar bill. No matter how many times you tried to put it through, it would refuse it. But pull a different dollar bill from your wallet, and it would accept it on the first try.
So one day, as it was refusing my first dollar bill, I opened my wallet to find no other dollar bills. I put the original bill back in my wallet, fiddled around in there for a bit, and pulled it back out. The machine accepted it immediately.
in the 1980s I worked in a mall office supply store (our hottest tech item was a all-in-one word processor with keyboard, tiny yellow screen, and "printer" which was actually just an automated typewriter)
we had a change machine next to the self-service, black-and-white photocopier. one day a coworker made a copy of a dollar bill, trimmed it to actual size, and fed it to the change machine
out came four quarters
they did this a few more times, whenever there weren't any customers or managers around. a few days later, they tried again but apparently the machine service folks discovered what was going on and changed some setting. this clever coworker tried again, this time making a double-sided copy, and voila! it worked again
a few days later, the machine was serviced again, and along with a stern warning from management about how the FBI would become very interested in what was happening if it continued, they told us to keep an eye on the machine whenever someone was near it
sure enough, the anticapitalist equipment stopped working, even with double-sided color copies (said coworker tried again, despite the warnings)
these days that would never work, and if someone were to try, you just know the narc machine would immediately call the cops
I think one of the greatest joys of fandom is being able to look back on a certain media or a ship or a trope or event or something of that nature, and being able to remember like "oh yeah! that was how I became friends with [x]!" "that was when that friend and I watched that show and stayed up until 2 am to do it!" and when those friendships bleed back over to real life too, like "oh I tried that food bc x says they like it!" and "that's x's favorite animal!" and all these sorts of things that happened because we happened to meet just like, in the great vastness of 1) human existence and 2) the ephemerality of fandom existence.
The way that certain things become suffused with that friendship and the like joy that really is. What an uncommon occurrence. What a lovely thing it is. What an honor. What a privilege.
Thinking of this one again. I love you - all the fandom friends I still talk to, and all the ones that've become lost to the vicissitudes of time -
I still have the baby blanket I made your son, it's embroidered with his name on the front, but it never made it to the mail, he must be nearly ten years old now, I remember when you mentored me about that one life skill, thanks for letting me talk to you when you were busy, do you remember when I was telling you about my family, what about the time you and I voice called over dinner, or when I told you to try rambutans and jujubes, I still have the pencil holder you sent me seven years ago, but of course I ate the chocolate, the last time we talked you didn't seem so good, you were worried about your health, I haven't been back there in years, I hope you're well -

You are a supervillain, and everyone was surprised when you declared another supervillain to be your arch nemesis instead of one of the heroes who constantly thwart your plans.
Coming from someone currently dangling from their feet over a vat of acid, the tone is remarkably unconcerned.
Nico glanced over his shoulder at the hero... what was his name? Lightbulb or something?
"Of course not," he replied. "I rob banks."
"I've got a buddy that I have to stop from killing people every time we hang out. You'd be suprised how mild that is for an anti-hero."
"Not an anti-hero."
"Sure," Lightbulb -- that couldn't be right, he was just getting misled by his powers -- started shifting in place a little, trying to spin in place for some reason. "But really, I don't get why you have to be a villain if your nemesis is going to be another villain."
"The label suits my methods more."
"You haven't killed anyone."
"I kidnapped you."
"Meh, this is like a regular Wednesday for me. Actually, you got me out of trig, so I'm kinda thankful."
"Out of..." Nico stopped tinkering and turned around to stare at the hero. Was that a pimple on his neck? "Wait, how old are you?"
Lightbulb stared at him, before his momentum made him turn away from him.
"... mind your business."
Nico rolled his eyes and turned back to his machines. "Amazing. Just wonderful."
"Oh, are you one of those people that don't like fighting teens?"
"You mean a normal person? Yes."
"I don't think normal people have giant vats of acid."
"Touché. But, yes, I find child endangerment distasteful."
"That's nice. As a teenage superhero, I wish more people did."
"... your life is horrible."
"I know."
"And I'm saying that as someone actively endangering your life."
"Yeah, I was meaning to ask, why are you endangering my life?"
"You are Doomsinger's chosen nemesis, are you not? Does he not do that thing where only-"
"'Only he has the honor of killing me', yeah, okay, I see what you're doing. Kinda insulted to be bait, that's sidekick stuff, but it's not a bad plan."
"Thank you," Nico nodded, finally putting the finishing touches on his death ray. He showed it to the teenager. "What do you think?"
"I dunno, I'm not a tech hero."
"You've been at this longer than me, I'd value your opinion anyways."
"Aww, thank you!" Lightbulb seemed genuinely flattered at that. "Well, it looks pretty robust. Probably won't explode if I hit it with a light beam."
"Glad to hear it. Is that something that happens often?"
"All the time. It's how I take out most death rays."
Nico nodded and carried the swivel chair over to the acid, since he was already caught in conversation with the child.
"So, what made you decide to become a hero?" he asked.
"Eh, woke up with powers, figured I might as well help people with them since it'd be kind of a waste not to. You?"
"My daughter died as collateral damage in your last fight against Doomsinger."
Lightbulb paled. People always did that, even though Nico made sure to keep his tone casual so as to put them at ease.
"Oh, I'm... I'm so sorry--"
"Don't be. You were helping people. It'd be ridiculous to hate you for a fight he started."
"Yeah, but... I don't know. I feel like I failed you."
"You are a child who is continually forced to fight a grown man determined to explode the planet. If anyone was failed, it was you. Someone should have dealt with Doomsinger years ago."
Alarms blared. He was here.
"That's the thing though, isn't it?" Nico muttered, adjusting his mask and fixing on his labcoat. "Sir Terry Pratchett once wrote that people love to say that someone should do something, but they never follow it up with 'and that someone is me'."

We, @avengerco & I, finally have the first batch of games up in our shop, geekfamilycollegefund. Each listing has a video to prove that the game has been recently tested and still works. The games also have their case, instruction guide, and many have the Nintendo inserts as well. Pokemon SoulSilver includes the Pokewalker, clip, a strap, the outer box, case, all inserts, and of course the game.
We still have some game guides left too. There's also many Pokemon items including some hard to find styluses and TCG badges.
