Instead of the nightmare OOC trainwreck that was Phantom Planet it really would have been interesting to explore how Danny would have reacted without his powers under less contrived circumstances.
Let’s say one of Jack and Maddie’s inventions meant to cancel out ghost powers zaps Danny and he later finds, to his horror, that it totally suppressed his ghost half for an unknown amount of time leaving him (almost) entirely human.
At first, Danny takes the whole thing in stride. Finally, a vacation he can properly enjoy without worrying about his secrets or ghosts in general. Sam, Tucker and Jazz are less convinced but are also quietly relieved for some enforced downtime for them and Danny.
It starts with the little things. Danny just feels uncomfortably warm all the time, he’d gotten used to his ghost core constantly radiating chill that even at room temperature, he’s sweating. He drives up the electricity bill by increasing the AC every five minutes. He’s got bruises on his fingers and knuckles from all the times he thoughtlessly tried to reach through his locker or through the walls in his room. His body feels so much heavier, like gravity is pushing extra hard down upon him.
Danny had just become so accustomed to his powers that taking them away suddenly felt like he’d lost a part of himself. Staring up at the night sky, so far away from the ground he could no longer leave, he begins to feel real sadness and panic.
Without Phantom there to pick up the slack, ghosts are running rampant through the city. Valerie and the Fentons are overwhelmed, enough to not notice that Danny is really not coping well. He can’t eat, can’t sleep, can’t concentrate on school work or goofing off. He just feels empty, broken and very lost.
Standing in the lab, surrounded by weapons, none of them react to him. Danny throws the Boomerang and it just falls limply to the floor. He hits the floor right after and just sobs. Some of the ghosts come by to see why Danny isn’t out playing fighting them only to find his ectosignature is so faint, it’s like he’s not even there. They’re all upset about losing their favorite punching bag. Queue a serious of heartwarming and hilarious attempts of Phantom’s greatest enemies trying to jumpstart his powers again.
Skulker: Okay now jump off of this very tall building
Danny: Will you catch me if I can’t fly on my own?
Skulker: No, either way we’ll get your ghost side back :)
Eventually, Danny’s core starts up again and for the first time in a week he feels properly alive again. Pun intended. He spends that night ghosting across his room, tips of his toes lightly brushing against the carpet, ice and ectoplasm lightly bobbing around the room. His life may be difficult and very strange but it’s his and he wouldn’t want to trade this for anything.
