Emperors Napoleon I and Alexander I spent a lot of time arranging logistics so that these two most powerful men in Europe could meet face to face and hammer out a treaty themselves, without relying on ministers. The plans for the meeting were so detailed that, in order to avoid either of them entering the other's camp (because of the protocol issues with deciding who gets to be the host and who has to be the visitor) a special house was built on a small island in a river between the two camps, and each emperor was rowed to the island.

When they finally met face to face, after months of negotiation to make this meeting possible, they immediately spent hours discussing a cause very dear to the hearts of both emperors, one so important that all other issues took second place.
