Princess Charlotte during Trooping The Colour on 13 June 2026 in London, England.
Favourite couple first of course! It was lovely seeing them. Tim’s looking great, and Princess Anne is just magnificent, and it’s amazing to see her ride by. Love it! 🥰😍🥰🥳 (Sorry for taking so long, but the internet connection is quite fickle during Trooping.)

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were seen waving to spectators gathered along the route for Trooping the Colour today. The royal children travelled alongside their mother, the Princess of Wales, in the Ascot Landau, a historic four-wheeled carriage with a convertible roof that can be lowered.
This elegant vehicle is one of five such landaus maintained by the Royal Mews, having been acquired during Queen Victoria's reign. The carriage is primarily associated with the Royal Meeting at Ascot, where it features prominently in the annual procession, though it also appears at state visits, royal weddings and other ceremonial occasions.

The Ascot Landau is typically drawn by the renowned Windsor Greys, horses that have fulfilled ceremonial duties for successive monarchs and their families since the Victorian era. These distinctive grey horses continue to play a significant role in the nation's ceremonial life, maintaining a tradition spanning more than a century. For the occasion, the Princess of Wales donned a blue Catherine Walker design complemented by a Philip Treacy hat and her Irish Guards brooch.

Several senior members of the Royal Family participated in the parade on horseback, riding mounts with a special connection to the Crown. The Prince of Wales rode Darby, a horse presented by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 2019 to commemorate both the 80th anniversary of the RCMP's breeding programme and the 50th anniversary of their first gift horse, Burmese.

The Princess Royal travelled on Noble, a horse given to the King in 2023 and carried His Majesty during that year's birthday parade. The Duke of Edinburgh travelled on Sir John, a horse presented to Queen Elizabeth II in 2016 to mark her 90th birthday.
The RCMP's association with the Royal Family dates back to the late Queen's Coronation in 1953, with the Mounties subsequently presenting Her Late Majesty with eight horses throughout her reign.

It was a glorious summer’s day as the royal family gathered in London for Trooping the Colour 2026. One of the highlights of the social season for the House of Windsor, the celebration of King Charles’ ‘official birthday’ saw the likes of the Princess of Wales, Prince William, and the Duchess of Edinburgh embrace all the pomp and ceremony that the monarch and his military have to offer.
In an era of a stripped-down monarchy, Trooping the Colour is no longer the opportunity to see the wider royal family that it once was, now only frequented by working members of the Firm. For royal watchers, however, it is an opportunity to see those core pillars of support for the King at their elegant best.
The Royal Family typically travel in two types of carriage for Trooping the Colour: barouches and Ascot Landaus.

Barouches are a type of carriage first seen in London in the early nineteenth century. There are today two barouches at the Royal Mews, which are distinguished by the lightly elegant shape of the undercarriage of the body. In common with almost all the carriages at the Royal Mews, they bear the dark claret paint which has been synonymous with royal vehicles, both horse drawn and motorised, for the past century.

The barouches display the royal insignia of a lion surmounting a crown, surrounded by the Collar of the Order of the Garter, on the door and rear panels. They are driven by a coachman with a pair of horses, the coachman’s box being lined in blue wool with silk braid with roses (England), thistles (Scotland) and shamrocks (Northern Ireland) woven into the trim. The barouches have been used for Trooping the Colour for over a hundred years.
This year, it was Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, who led the royal parade with Princess Anne’s husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, in the No. 1 Barouche, while the No. 2 Barouche was graced by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.

Behind the barouches came King Charles and Queen Camilla in an Ascot Landau. In coachbuilding, a landau is a four-wheeled luxury carriage with a roof that can be let down. The Ascot Landau, one of five kept by the Royal Mews and purchased during the reign of Queen Victoria, is a wonderfully bright, small, lovely carriage, which chiefly features in the Carriage Procession during The Royal Meeting at Ascot every year.

Three members of the Firm rode on horses from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Prince William rode Darby, a horse presented to Queen Elizabeth II in 2019 to mark the 80th anniversary of the RCMP’s breeding programme. Princess Anne rode Noble, presented to King Charles in 2023 and ridden by His Majesty at the 2023 Birthday Parade. The trio was completed by Prince Edward, who rode Sir John, a horse presented by the RCMP to mark the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
This year marks the fourth Trooping the Colour of His Majesty’s reign. The King attended his first Trooping the Colour in 1951, aged three, riding in a carriage with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, and aunt, Princess Margaret. The King first rode in the parade as Colonel of the Welsh Guards in 1975.

The honour of Trooping their Colour rotates through different regiments each year, and in 2026 it lies with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards. It was the first time that the Regiment will have ‘Trooped the Colour’ before a King in 90 years.
The Grenadier Guards is the most senior infantry regiment in the British Army and has a unique relationship with the Sovereign. In 1656, King Charles II gave orders that the command (or Captaincy) of the first Company of the first regiment of Foot Guards be reserved for Himself and would be called The King’s Own Company. That command has been held by the Sovereign in every reign since.
The celebrations culminated with the traditional appearance of the Royal Family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, followed by the annual RAF flypast in the skies over London.

Kate Middleton has arrived at Trooping the Colour, riding in a carriage with her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Prince William, meanwhile, rode on horseback in the parade. For the occasion—Trooping the Colour is the annual celebration of the monarch’s birthday—the Princess of Wales chose a light blue dress with white piping, and a large, statement hat.

Since marrying Prince William in 2011, Kate has not missed Trooping the Colour Through the years, Kate has primarily worn looks by Alexander McQueen and Catherine Walker to parade (she’s also worn pieces from Jenny Packham, Erdem, and Andrew Gn).
Following her two-day trip to Italy last month, it has been a quiet few weeks for Kate. She joined the rest of the royal family at Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling’s wedding in the Cotswolds this past weekend, and earlier in June, she carried out two engagements related to cancer charities: she joined King Charles and Queen Camilla to host a reception at St. James’s Palace, she then visited a holistic cancer center in Manchester.
Two years ago, Kate made her return to public life at Trooping the Colour following news of her cancer diagnosis. She spent much of that year out of the public eye, announcing in September 2024 she had finished chemotherapy treatment and January 2025 that she was in remission. The Princess has not explicitly commented on her health, or her recovery, in recent months, but in an interview, Prince William revealed insight into her cancer journey, sharing, “She’s an amazing mum, an amazing wife, and, literally, our family couldn’t cope without her, so, she’s been absolutely stunning, brilliant.”
