oh yay okay! for reference, this is the post anon is referencing. 

basically, my thought process through this was that Eli was sitting in his room after Demetri left him Cobra Kai, and Hey There Delilah came on the radio and he just started bawling, then decided to learn how to sing it. personally, i hc that Eli can sing and plays guitar and piano. 

this stanza would be before Dem and Eli “broke up”. i’ll be right there if you get lonely // listen to my voice it’s my disguise // i’m by your side -- Eli’s remembering every time that Demetri has stood up for him, that they’d always be right there for each other.

oh, it’s what you do to me // what you do to me -- Eli thinks about him and Dem. they were friends. and Eli wanted to be more than that. every time Dem would smile at him, or laugh at a joke he said, Eli’s heart would leap and he’d get butterflies in his stomach. it’s how Demetri makes him feel

hey there Demetri Delilah // I know times are getting hard -- Eli would think of how he and Demetri have fallen completely and utterly apart. broken ties. things are not how he wants them to be, they’re hard without his best friend. [...] we’ll have it good // we’ll have the life we knew we would // my word is good -- at this point, Eli thinks of how he wanted to be friends with Demetri his whole life, and how he ruined it in one stupid sentence that because of a Yelp review. he thinks about apologizing to Demetri, and as times go on, the countless of times he could’ve. the missed opportunities, as his mom or someone might say. at the beginning, he had a chance, but now that so much more has happened, he can’t. he has to hold up the Hawk facade

I’ve got so much left to say -- oh, the things that Eli wishes he could say to Demetri. Eli starts writing this all down at one point. he just needs to get his feelings out somewhere. this then motivates another headcanon i have - Eli writing songs about Demetri. If every simple song I wrote to you // would take your breath away // I’d write it all // even more in love with me you’d fall // we’d have it all -- Eli writes songs about Dem. he uses his feelings and channels it toward songs. and he writes it all down. Eli knows that he probably won’t ever play them, but if he did, and maybe if Dem felt the same way about him, maybe he’d fall in love with him.

a thousand miles seems pretty far // but they’ve got planes and trains and cars // i’d walk to you if I had no other way -- Eli isn’t actually 1,000 miles away from Demetri, but it sure feels that way. the rift between Miyagi and Cobra Kai had been growing larger every day, and Dem and Eli had been moving farther and farther apart. but Eli would still do anything for his Demetri

our friends would all make fun of us // and we’ll just laugh along because we know // that none of them have ever felt this way -- imagine if Kyler found out how he felt for Demetri. he’d tell everyone, and then Eli would be all alone. Eli doesn’t know how he feels for Demetri; he very well might be in love, but all he knows for sure is that he’s never felt that way for anyone. 

Demetri Delilah, I can promise you // that by the time that we get through // the world will never ever be the same // and you’re to blame -- even if Demetri doesn’t feel the same way about Eli, Eli knows that his world will never be the same, and it’ll be because of Demetri. Demetri, who wore flannels, Demetri, with his gangly limbs, Demetri, with his nerd shit that Eli loved. it was all Demetri.

Hey there, Demetri Delilah // you be good, and don’t you miss me -- Eli hopes to whatever god is listening that Demetri misses him like he misses Demetri. what does Demetri think of him? does Eli pass his head as much as Demetri passes his? and worst of all: does Demetri hate him? Eli misses Dem so much, and he doesn’t want Demetri to feel the same pain as he does.
