1) st*rbucks released a βblending powderβ to help prevent blended refreshers from separating too quickly
2) they used silica as one of the ingredients, presumably to keep the powder itself from caking as amorphous silica/silicon dioxide is naturally occurring and a common anti-caking agent
3) (amorphous) silica is found to be safe to ingest in certain proportions, specifically the fda says itβs safe to ingest if itβs 2% or less of whatever itβs in (however it doesnβt seem that the fda has done tests in the upper boundary of how much is actually safe)
4) it is ingredient 5 of 6 in this blending powder
5) However there is some evidence to suggest that inhaling amorphous silica, say as a powder, can cause lung irritation and inflammation
6) there have been complaints and anecdotal reports from st*rbucks partners across usamerica of having bloody noses, lingering sore throats, and coughing fits after having worked with the blending powder for extended portions of their shifts
crucially, i donβt believe starbucks has intentionally put either a toxic form of silica or some excessive amount of otherwise nontoxic silica in this powder. i suspect whatβs happened here is that no one thought to google whether or not itβs safe to breathe in any kind of silica bc well. itβs safe to ingest (in small quantities) so why would it be a problem? <- their hypothetical thinking, not mine. However βοΈ the fact that i and others have experienced rashes at work after the launch of this blending powder has me worried that thereβs a contamination problem. iβm not saying that there is one just that itβs worrisome to meβespecially because amorphous silica shouldnβt have any topical reaction unless youβre actively allergic to it, which you would likely already know given how common it is. plus the likelihood of me and a dozen people at neighboring stores all having silica allergies without ever having known it is pretty low i think
I work at Starbucks!! Please read if youβre concerned.
While it is FDA approved, the silica can cause SEVERE issues. Itβs so fine that it can cause horrible respiratory problems and baristas are feeling it all over the country. (Myself included!!)
Starbucks is now using a silica-based blending powder, which has a tendency to become airborne and easily inhaled.
After hearing about health concerns, we asked baristas if they have felt sick since the ingredient's launch.
Our union received hundreds of responses.

Jax literally killed himself in the circus after making the other two openly queer people around him - a nonbinary person and a non-straight woman - the targets of some of the worst of his externalized self hatred and queerphobia.
But in real life, in the physical world, she's at Riley's bar. She's surrounded by other queer people. He killed himself but she's alive in a place hosted by the nonbinary person he resented. She has the community of other queer people that he rejected.
