{I have realized upon retrospection that it means Portal 2 can be interpreted as [and basically IS, in a literal sense] a powerful story about the cycle of abuse and how hurt people hurt people, but more than that, how two people were able to break that cycle, because Chell never let GLaDOS take away her self-worth and always fought for her freedom no matter how much psychological manipulation GLaDOS tried on her, and on GLaDOS’s part she was able to recall her repressed traumatic memories and actually recognize that she was lashing out at her abuser, not really at Chell, and because of that she was able to let Chell go for both of their sakes}

Lego Dimensions Portal is of course not necessarily totally adherent to Portal canon but it is definitely a trip. Batman!! She’s friends with Batman, oh, he was here the other day. I actually have this little doodle at my desk at work that I did based on that song!

She just misses her wife

I also remembered this from the Portal Wiki which I ran to fetch for this ask:

I’m a literal sucker for Biblical imagery (or religious imagery of any kind, but this is obviously specifically Christian in nature), and the specific verse chosen in the context of GLaDOS herself is very interesting. She is a character who, by the very nature of her position, cannot leave. She states that “good people don’t end up here.” She suffered a lot at the hands of her abusers and then inflicted a lot of suffering in turn as a result. I think, though she would never admit it, she would find the idea of forgiveness and redemption to be comforting.

{I recently binged all the Half-Life lore solely so I could better understand the world of Portal, and it got me thinking— I really love how Black Mesa and Aperture Science contrast.

Hear me out: during its lifespan, Aperture Science was an honest villain. Cave Johnson was a TERRIBLE person who did TERRIBLE things for the sake of science... but darn if his openness and honesty about his experiments didn’t cause his own downfall. (“The lab boys... [are] telling me I oughtta stop making these pre-recorded messages. That gave me an idea: make more pre-recorded messages!”) Heck, even GLaDOS— a compulsive liar— is more than happy to brag about the terrible things done during testing. She’ll tell Chell very openly that she’s about to try killing her with deadly neurotoxin, or that the hard-light bridge she’s standing on will set her hair aflame.

On the other hand, Black Mesa was an underhanded/traitorous villain. The entire opening of Half-Life 2 is what feels like a two-hour safety monologue about security clearance, HIV suit guidelines, and where to get help if you think you might’ve had radioactive exposure. They even mention that Black Mesa is an equal-opportunity employer. It sounds like a company you can trust— and that’s what makes them worse than Aperture. They work FOR the government... and then when they breach their own safety protocols and cause an alien invasion, the government responds by trying to kill everyone in the facility to erase all proof of the incident.

TL;DR— neither Aperture nor Black Mesa ever cared about human life, but Black Mesa pretended they did... which is why they ended up with all the government funding.
