i know i am a bitch with a short fuse and all, but the thing is people in fandom do need to get more comfortable with calling out others for saying actually offensive shit or at the very least asking them if that is what they were saying. doesn't need to be (and shouldn't be) a public callout thing or turned into a big deal, you can ask in private, you can be diplomatic about it. you don't need to be rude or accusatory you can just ask to repeat and rephrase and for them to consider the implications of what they are saying and maybe address their biases. maybe they don't even know they got those biases, idk. but if it's not addressed at all in favor of resolutions like redirection and dropping the subject, it both emboldens this kind of behavior in the future and actually makes the space - and you - feel unsafe to others. safe =/= conflict-free; au contraire, safe spaces actually have to be built and maintained on some amount of confrontation, i am sorry to say. you can't "yes and" everything ever.

like i think the achilles heel of iwtv has always been this sort of discomfort this removed irony or like need to turn to the camera or stop the episode to go ok i know this is ridiculous but stick with me but i think its getting even worse with this self aware attempt at camp that simply does not believe in itself enough to not just constantly lampshade the irony when such a style needs total unblinking commitment to work which makes all the true blood references feel even more embarrassing like that was a show that knew how to commit to being stupid and achieve camp through that rolin jones is too self conscious which is also even funnier as a tack to take to a series written by the author of "interrogating the text from the wrong perspective"
