“Yeah,” he chuckled dryly, following after her lead. “You don’t have to tell me.” He admired her attitude though. Once upon a time, Sam had been incredibly optimistic and caring, but grief and addiction had stolen that from him. He wondered, not for the first time, if he’d ever feel that way again. “It’s hard, though. I mean, I’m on my second innings and I’m still figuring everything out. Regrets included.” A big part of those regrets was in the room with them, but he didn’t look in her direction despite feeling eyes on him. He had no desire to cause any further upset. Still, his mind was on overdrive imagining what the others might be thinking, might be feeling, unable to tune it out. He’d hardly been paying attention to his dance partner at all, something he regretted once she’d called him out on it. It was miraculous he hadn’t stood on her toes.
“‘This’?” He questioned, frowning at her gesture. But then she continued, and he sighed, still trying to maintain the polite smile but realising she could see right through it. “It’s - definitely not that. And it’s definitely not you, either,” he was quick to add. “I really appreciate you thinking of me like this. It’s…” Sam was incredibly hesitant to tell her the truth, not wanting to rope her into the drama for no reason. He had no idea the kind of fallout it might cause. Even dancing with her now made him feel wary, and admittedly, a little flustered. He sighed. “Have you ever had that feeling, like you’re overstaying your welcome? I just.. don’t wanna be the reason anybody else has a bad night. Y'know?”
Clara nodded, trying to understand how that must feel. Life was already complicated enough without having a gap in the middle, without experiencing the end and having to come back from it. Sam wasn’t alone in that experience, of course, there were countless non-humans in Alexandria, his own brother included. But she imagined it was still isolating, an emotional coldness. Her eyes softened in sympathy, a gentle hand meeting the top of his shoulder. “Does anyone ever figure it all out? Even Kol doesn’t have the answers, and he’s lived over a thousand years. I know there’s no comfort in it, but maybe we aren’t supposed to know. The most we can do is try,” she contemplated, shrugging a shoulder. “We often do what feels right at the time, but most of us are wrong in someone else’s story.”
Clara waited patiently as Sam answered, grateful for his honesty, and pleased to know it wasn’t her interruption that had upset his mood. “Maybe once or twice. It didn’t make me leave, though.” She did wonder who he might be referring to, whether it was Clove or someone in the Victor’s circle. But she didn’t like to ponder on rumours; if he wanted to tell her, he would. In his own time. “If they’re having a bad night, that’s on them. The room’s big enough for them to ignore you, you’re not in their way. The only people who have any say on who can be here are Amy and Rory, and they’ve invited you. You’re the best man’s brother. So leave them to it, and stop punishing yourself. Even if it’s only for one night.” Clara smiled then, to soften her assertive tone. “I’ve waited a long time for a dance with you, Sam. So you better commit. Prove to me that those long legs are good for more than just chasing after werewolves.”
It was only out of love for Amy that Sam had shown up today. It didn’t matter how many months had passed — there was still tension in the air, a hostile reception he couldn’t shake no matter how hard he tried. Johanna and her apparent bodyguards had made it clear on multiple occasions he was never going to get a word in. So, he just had to live with it, with what he’d done. They both did. But that didn’t make it any easier. Only with Dean’s encouragement did he put on brave face and finally slip into a suit. And once the ceremony had started, and he’d seen the joy on Amy’s face, Sam had no regrets. After all, it was important to him to support the people who, after everything that had happened, still supported him. It was just hard to remember that sometimes.
His confidence slipped a short while into the reception. The alcohol was flowing, but Sam hadn’t touched any of it, a part of him not feeling worthy enough to celebrate, to fully let down his guard. Dean was in and out, Gwen dragging him off to dance multiple times, much to Sam’s great amusement. But no matter how still he remained, sitting in the same spot at the same table, he still felt eyes on him, hateful and warning. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could stand it for. He was glad to have supported Amy, but he didn’t want to take away from anyone else’s night either. There was no point in all groups being unhappy. His big brother returned once more, somehow tipsier than before, and Sam rose, preparing to say goodnight, knowing he’d be met with resistance, but also knowing Gwen would be able to distract Dean soon enough. That was, until, someone else entirely showed up, drinks in hand.
Sam blinked at her, the question throwing him entirely off guard. “From… me?” Sure, he got along well with Clara, but he hadn’t imagined anyone wanting to be seen with him, let alone dance with him. “I don’t- I’m not sure that’s a good idea. I mean, thank you, but I really should just call it a night —”
“He’ll do it,” came Dean’s swift reply from somewhere behind him, accompanied by a wicked grin and a shove in his side, Sam stumbling forward, closer to Clara. Giving his brother the stink eye, who quickly departed in response, Sam cleared his throat, offering the woman a sheepish, apologetic smile. Watching her now, he realised he did feel bad turning her down, especially when she’d made an effort. “Okay,” he finally nodded, holding out a hand. “You might regret this but - lead the way.”
Clara hadn’t expected to be met with resistance, knowing that Sam was single, so initially she pouted, considering whether or not he needed convincing. He didn’t seem the shy type, but perhaps that was a trait she’d missed, not knowing him well enough. Or maybe it was something else. Of course, he could’ve been politely rejecting her, not feeling the attraction. But there was no harm in dancing, there were plenty of single friends celebrating together beside them. Luckily for her, though, Dean stepped in and gave Sam the push he needed. She smiled in the older brother’s direction as he walked away, a small sign of her gratitude. She’d always been a fan of Dean, too.
“I won’t regret anything. Life’s far too short for that,” she grinned, placing the drinks down on the table, figuring they could return to them later if all went well. Clara took the hand he offered then, leading Sam to the dancefloor, ignorant to the judgemental glances shot their way from the Victor’s table. Even if she was aware of them, she wouldn’t care. “Come on then,” she began, gently swaying with him. “What’s with this?” Clara pointed to the man’s face, noting the smile didn’t reach his eyes. “I know you’re as happy for Amy and Rory as I am, so it can’t be that. What makes you think dancing with me isn’t a good idea?” She questioned, noting his choice of words from earlier.
Clara and Sam hadn’t spoken much over the course of the rebellion, but she’d always liked him. He was polite, charming, handsome. It had never extended past that though, until she saw him suited up earlier that afternoon, and Clara realised she actually quite fancied him. So, inspired by tipsy confidence, and the perfect choice of song, she made his way over to his table with two drinks in hand, a smile stretching her lips. “So… what’s it gonna’ take for me to steal a dance from you, Sam Winchester?”

It'd been nearly a week since Amy and Rory's wedding, since he'd completely abandoned Clara on the dance floor to come to Pansy's aid. Since he'd actually looked Johanna in the eye. Even without the ability to sleep, Sam had needed every hour since to process the event, to come to terms with his new reality, to accept and live in the discomfort. There was clearly nothing he could do to patch things up with Jo, to explain his side to them, to have it be enough. Even when all of his instincts told him to fight back, Sam had to accept he'd done something unforgiveable, and that was to be the end of it. But even if he couldn't ever make things right with Johanna, he could still start somewhere. He could let someone else in, someone who he suspected had been trying to do exactly that for quite some time. It had been a long time since he'd done anything like this, since he'd even considered having a future with someone. It felt impossible to, considering how the last relationship had worked out. But that wasn't Clara's fault. She deserved better than his self-hatred. Having already knocked on her door, Sam was pleased she hadn't slammed it right in his face upon answering. It gave him the confidence to continue. "Hi," he tried for a smile, admittedly uncomfortable but pushing through it. "I'm... it's good to see you. I'm sorry to bother you and show up unannounced like this, it's just... I thought maybe..." He sighed, shaking his head, starting again. "Look — would you maybe wanna come and get a beer with me? We can get drunk, talk about how much of a jerk I was at the wedding. I'd.. really like the chance to explain."
After Amy and Rory's wedding, Clara had been unable to stop thinking about Sam. Although their dance had come to an abrupt end, she didn't hold too much resentment, as it appeared as if he'd been defending himself, something she'd encouraged him to do only moments before the confrontation had arisen. Still, Clara was awfully stubborn by nature, so hadn't called him since, waiting for him to make the first move. Or rather, second. It was the only way in which she'd be able to determine whether or not the attraction she felt was reciprocated.
Luckily for her, Sam hadn't kept her wondering for too long. Clara was already smiling by the time she'd opened the door, her eyes alight at the sight of him standing there. He'd come to apologise, and offered to take her out. Lucky her. "Oh, I don't know, Sam. I have homework to grade, and I'm still cross with you," she teased, knowing her expression would give her away regardless. As much as she'd enjoy watching him squirm for a while longer, she couldn't. She'd already wasted too much time by not approaching him sooner. "Alright then. But I won't be having beer. I'll have a glass of wine, because I'm a classy woman."
“ it was just a kiss, that’s all. ” nev hehe
kissy sentence starters.
“That’s not what that look on your face is telling me.” Clara raised her eyebrows at him in question, not believing it had simply been a kiss. Especially not for someone like Neville. “You don’t have to tell me the truth, but you have to tell it to yourself. Otherwise it’ll turn into a big mess of confused feelings.”
