𝚝𝚑𝚎   𝚝𝚒𝚖𝚋𝚛𝚎   𝚘𝚏   𝚑𝚎𝚛   𝚟𝚘𝚒𝚌𝚎   𝚗𝚞𝚍𝚐𝚎𝚜   at   something   deep   into   your   mind   &   throws   it   askew.   the   sudden   smell   of   rain    assaults   your   senses,   the   grinding   sound   of   crumbling   stone   fills   your   ears   &   lightning   flashes   into   your   minds   eye.   it   all   happens   in   less   than   a   second   &   the   unexpected   onslaught    disappears    just   as   quickly             ﹔          however,   you   are   left   teetering   on   an   invisible   edge.          (          𝐈   𝐊𝐍𝐎𝐖   𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓   𝐈   𝐖𝐈𝐋𝐋   𝐅𝐀𝐋𝐋.   𝐈𝐓   𝐈𝐒   𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄         )          you   realize   vaguely   that   your   actual   position   has   not   changed   &   that   you   are   gaping   rather   rudely   at   the   woman.   with   a   swiftness   you   have   crafted   to   perfection  under   your   fathers   demanding   thumb,   you   compose   yourself          —–          the   lingering   feeling   of   unease   sparking   at   the   top   of   your   spine,   the   feeling   of   knowing   her,   of   knowing   her   voice,   ignored   for   now.      a   polite   but   detached   smile   blooms   on   your   lips   &   dull   blue   eyes   are   tightly   shuttered   as   you  look   at   her.          ❛       apologies   for   my   intrusion   then,   miss?          ❜          

𝚒𝚝'𝚜   𝚛𝚞𝚍𝚎   𝚝𝚘   𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚛𝚎 ,          but   arguably,   it’s   probably   considered   worse   to   enter   someone’s   subconscious   and   change   their   whole   life,   so   there   are   some   things   you   can   let   slide.   that   should   have   been   the   end   of   it,   he   should   have   gone   back   to   his   spot   in   line,   she’d   leave   with   her   latte.   it   isn’t,   and   her   fingers   curl   nervously   around   the   strap   of   her   messenger   bag   as   if   it   alone   might   stop   the   black   hole   from   emerging   beneath   her   and   swallowing   her   whole.   since   the   first   time   she’s   spotted   him,   she   chances   a   glance,   gaze   flicking   over   tired   contours   and   then   away.   the   reveal   of   sleepless   lines   does   nothing   to   soothe   the   pit   widened   in   her   stomach.   details   others   might   not   think   over   twice,   heavy   is   the   head   that   wears   the   crown,   especially   sons   to   empires,   but   that’s   her   job.   details.   noticing   what   slips   from   common   attention.   it   is   her   turn   to   gape   now,   mouth   open,   formed   around   soundless   words   that   have   yet   to   force   their   way   out                but   they   don’t   have   to.   what   would   her   answer   have   been   anyway ?   her   name ?   dangerous.   another   brush   off ?   the   idea   is   grating.   but   fate,   if   you   would   have   it,   is   placed   in   the   hands   a   tall,   tattooed   barista,   selene,   who   calls   out   her   name   for   her   order.          𝑨𝑹𝑰𝑨𝑫𝑵𝑬 !          her   latte.   she   watches,   more   than   feels   it   pressed   into   her   hand   and   knows   by   the   way   her   stomach   churns   that   she   won’t   be   drinking   it   anymore.   steam   rises   from   its   surface,   scalding   heat   more   than   soothing   warmth.          ❛      don’t   worry   about   it.   you   know   what,   actually   . . .     ❜          ceremoniously,   the   deliverance   of   her   doom   is   placed   into   his   hands.          ❛      here.   you   look   like   you   need   this   more   than   i   do.   it’s   just              a   latte,   simple,   nothing   else   in   it,   but   better   than   getting   back   in   line.     ❜          a   hasty   exit   would   now   be   the   best   course   of   option.

arthur’s jaw clenches  –  and he never gets this mad over something.  his hands clench at his sides, and then he relaxes.  forces himself to relax.  TRUST HER, a voice says in his head.  ( maybe mal’s. )  oh, how he wishes to lecture her.  how DANGEROUS, o curious ariadne !  “i’ll listen.”  and he will.  “but the risk you are taking…  if he remembers.”  arthur doesn’t finish the statement, not yet.  “i’m listening, ariadne.”  he feels betrayed.  how long had she’d planned to do this?  “talk.  quickly.”
