When did he start calling himselfĀ āThe Doctorā?
Who pros Phillip Culley and @willbrooks1989ā were pondering old classic Who scripts which alternate between identifying the speaker asĀ āDOCTORā orĀ āDOCTOR WHO.ā During the discussion, Phillip asked an intriguing question:
Thinking about it, when does he first call himself The Doctor, rather than a companion introducing him as such?
Tracking down references is my version of solving crossword puzzles, but this was a toughie. Summary of results:
At first he only identifies himself as a scientist, evading specifics. Either companions introduce him, or others see them calling him āDoctorā and follow suit.Ā (It originated with Ian, using āDoctorā in desperation because he didnāt believe āForemanā was his real name.)
Eventuallyā and the first time he does so is to Cameca in The AztecsāĀ heāll come out and sayĀ āThey call me the Doctor.ā But he still doesnāt do it very often, and only in response to queries.
Just as rarely, heāll refer to himself jokingly in third person āyour old friend the Doctorā or something of that sort to Barbara (Reign of Terror) or Victoria (Enemy of the World). Heās quoting their nickname for him when reminding them of their friendship.Ā
Starting with The Dalek Invasion of Earth,Ā the First Doctor begins correcting strangers if they call him Doc, Mister, Professor, or anything else. He tells themĀ āI prefer Doctorā or simply cuts them off with āDoctor.āĀ
Starting with The Celestial Toymaker,Ā heāll say āThis is the Doctorā under very specific circumstances: when heās using a long-distance communication device to identify himself to someone who knows him. Heās letting them know this is the person you call the DoctorĀ when they canāt see him.Ā
Starting with The Gunfighters, heāll occasionally invent an alias (āDoctor Caligari, Doctor Wer, Doctor John Smithā on the spur of the moment when a stranger demands a name.Ā
Right after regenerating, the Second Doctor forgets he isĀ the Doctor and refers to the Doctor as if heās somebody else, the first instance of post-regeneration amnesia (it wears off quickly).
In The Seeds of DoomĀ and Enemy of the World,Ā he says heās the Doctor (or tells VictoriaĀ āyou wouldnāt hit your old friend the Doctor, would you?ā in order to correct someoneās misidentification of him (see #4).Ā
From Season 9 onwards (The Mutants, Carnival of Monsters, Invasion of the Dinosaurs) he FINALLY starts introducing himself to random strangers routinely asĀ āIām the Doctor.ā Whereas before it was only under rare circumstances, in response to specific prompts or necessity, and usually only to people who already knew him.
Leading to the newly-regenerated Fourth Doctor telling Harry, āYou may be a doctor, but I am theĀ Doctor. The definite article, you might say.ā Itās no longer simply a label, alias or handle, but an expression of his core identity. Itās become how he thinks of himself as a person: THE DOCTOR.Ā
He owes Chatterton a great deal of thanks for coming up with the nickname. ;)Ā
Okay. Under the cut are relevant excerpts tracing the gradual evolution fromĀ āWhatās that boy Chesterfield calling me?ā toĀ āHelllo, Iām the Doctor!āĀ

Fascinating evolution of identity.
She reminds him of every good day heās ever had. Every summer spent in fields of grass. Every sunrise. Every sunset. She tastes like dew and smells like light. And when she speaks, itās like someone slowly plucking the strings of a guitar, a sadly beautiful song starting to play, all his own. And he loves her. He loves her like he can never grab enough of her between his fingers. And no matter how close he gets, even when they make love, it never feels close enough, like her flesh and her bones keep something sacred in them, hidden from him.
Paragraph from Chapter 3 of Intentional Dissonance, the future novel from the writer of I Wrote This For You. This is gonna be the most beautiful novel, I canāt wait to read it.Ā (via theglasschild)

Imagine, for a moment, Clara Oswald
Clara Oswald sending a Time Lord, thousands of years old, The Oncoming Storm, out for coffee. And he goes. Clara Oswald learning to ride a motorbike because riding on the back of Elevenās was fun, but she could do it so much better on her own. Clara Oswald gaining access to the Black Archives because her world-saving antics are as renowned as *his*. Clara Oswald grading papers on the TARDIS while casually putting out the diplomatic fires the Doctor starts on multiple worlds. Clara Oswald seducing Jane Austen and influencing the character development of Liz Bennett. (Guess who influenced Darcyās.) Clara Oswald riding into this world on a leaf and soaring off of it in a TARDIS she shares with yet another woman who was supposed to die thousands of years ago, but who the universe wasnāt ready to live without.Ā

Despite the fact that the Doctor forgot Clara, he still remembers her words spoken to him in childhood.
Be kind. Always be kind to everyone. I think thatās something that I find really powerful about the Doctor and all of his companions and everyone that they meet. I think thatās the underlying truth about it. Be kind to people. Doesnāt matter what walk of life anyoneās from. Doesnāt matter what they look like, what team they support, what colour they are, what sexuality. I think thatās one of the things thatās great about Doctor Who that itās all for people with liberty. And thatās how I like to live my life as well.
Pearl Mackie when a fan at Newcastle Film and Comic conĀ when asked if there was a message that people should take into their daily lives. Hearing her say this at the convention was absolutely lovely as she meant it so sincerely and I 100% agree with everything she said. (via songofgallifrey)

i originally never understood what clara was saying here, but i always understood she was mad at him for ditching her, and running out on her, and just⦠not being THERE, for her, after his regeneration. she was angry that he was so unpredictable from word go.
as i look at this great gifset now, i realize something: that was the problem. it wasnāt his face, it was the change, the CHANGE, of a man who left her repeatedly, constantly, despite her pleading. and while she took comfort in him leaving her that message in the paper, she wasnāt going to let him off the hook about him LEAVING her.
and i mean that in a literal sense. after the christmas special, where 11 constantly left clara behind or forced her away, 12 wakes up and what does he do, the first chance he gets? he leaves. and that just put her into immediate and instant anxiety-mode, because being left behind is just another way of getting lost. youāre abandoned and alone and sure, sheās resourceful and brave, but her faith is gutted. and claraās biggest fear, as we know from clara herself, is getting lost.
at this point, she was still trying to come to terms with the regeneration. we as viewers have the benefit of time to cope with show-based change, but for the characters, this was so newāand not just new, it was happening immediately after the damage of trenzalore. she was angry and hurt, and now she couldnāt figure out if she should hold this face accountable for what the last face did, or if she should let it goābut how could she let it go when he was doing exactly what the old doctor did? how could she take the good from this doctor and the one before, without also acknowledging the bad, or the questionable, or the painful?
so the episodeās end, with 12 saying heās the doctorāthat heās not on the phone (despite that doctor being him, just in a previous regeneration) but heās standing there, in front of herāis just a beautiful way of framing that complicated duality that clara struggled with for all of series 8. and she struggled with itĀ because heād hurt her so badly. series 8, at its core, was two things: the constant damaged state of a survivor (either a survivor of war or loss or other trauma), and the struggle of loving someone who was essentially formless. and for clara, an anxiety-addled young woman who was terrified of abandonment, this lesson was one of the most painful things to learn.
but she loved him. and her love for him was larger than her fear of the unknown. and in time she learned what we always know: that the doctor will always be all the faces he was before, but he also is, without question, the face heās wearing now.

I think people would make much better decisions when it comes to dating if they stopped focusing on things like weddings and babies and instead focused on things like funerals and disappointment. What I mean is when I think about who I want to marry, I canāt just stop at who I want to meet at the altar. Because when youāre thinking about the person you want to spend your natural life with, that means the person who will be by your side when life is hard. When your parents die. When you lose your job. When your child is hurt. When bill canāt get paid. And when all of those painful moments come, you have to think āis this the person i want by my side? Is this the person who will be generous and giving when Iām in need? Is this the person who will find the words to soothe my aching heart? Is this the person that when I look across the room through tearful eyes, I want to, need to see their face?ā
What Iām saying is when youāre thinking till death do us part, you really have to listen to the whole vow. The commitment is more than just walking down the isle. Its who you want to walk through life with.
