toby really hammered this point home all throughout the 10th anniversary stream by demonstrating how much of undertale's basic premise is just brandish with a meta twist and a healthy glug of exploring the cycle of violence and the trauma tragedy can inflict on an entire society for generations. the name "undertale" is just a synonym for "cave story." the earthbound references speak for themselves. toby will gladly point out at every opportunity where a gameplay element or story element in undertale or deltarune is a deliberate riff on something from an older video game. it's pointed out again and again throughout deltarune, especially in chapter 4, that stories aren't just told, they're retold. that is toby fox's statement as an artist. don't be afraid of being "unoriginal" because if you truly have anything of value to say, you can tell a story that's been around for five thousand years and make it feel like nothing the world has ever seen before
