This colorful âmini beastâ is a charming millipede often dubbed the Cherry Millipede, Apheloria virginiensis corrulgata. Sporting bright warning colors of black and yellow, this many-legged decomposer advertises its chemical defenses. When threatened, it emits a form of cyanide gas which has an odor like cherries or almonds. This interesting millipede is one of 19 species found at the Edge of Appalachia.
