Have you ever noticed how common it is in songs that get used by church communities to lean on the metaphors of white/black, light/darkness for good/bad? I always try to be aware of the kinds of metaphors I use in the songs I write and choose to be shared by the Jacob’s Well community. I’ve been trying to be even more aware of it during this time where we’re discussing race. I had even mentioned it to my group last week and then, at the last minute, I changed a couple songs and missed a couple of those. They’re everywhere.
What I’m not saying: writers of hymns, songs, and Bible passages are bigots who should know better.
What I am saying: it’s worth being intentional about not perpetuating unhealthy and unhelpful ideas in oppressed segments of a population (i.e.: white=good/ beautiful, black=bad/ ugly). Thinking about this when writing and choosing songs is a little thing that leaders can do.

I just uploaded a super rough take from a songwriting session yesterday of a new song inspired by conversations among Jacob's Well about growth drawing on the parable of the sower. Let me know what you think!
Tinnitus -- ringing or other noise in the ears -- affects some 50 million Americans, including nearly a million veterans. It's finally starting to get the attention it deserves from researchers, who are gaining new insights into what goes wrong.
An interesting article about that ringing in your ears. I’m taking it as a needed reminder to keep a pair of ear plugs with me too.

Turn Around
This season is a great time to do some reflection, to prune, to shed, to refocus, and in many cases, to turn around.
Sang a couple Derek Webb songs yesterday as we reflected on identity and the pitfalls on both sides of the spectrum with regard to our perception of our identity. Derek has been a strong voice in my head related to self-reflection and that concept of turning around.
I've also been hearing some interesting things swirling around related to that turning around in higher profile leaders. The first was Fred Phelps, who is the celebrity behind the "God Hates Fags" stuff and has now died. Derek Webb has actually had some things to say with regard to Phelps in the past and I appreciated a couple tweets he shared as Fred was on his deathbed:
i believe fred phelps will soon be free of his intense hatred. if God’s grace isn’t sufficient for the worst, there’s no hope for anyone.

The other came in a story I saw in Relevant Magazine about Mark Driscoll and his public apology:
My curiosities, skepticism, and questions aren't really what I want to hold up today, but rather a boldness to own our junk, to say we're sorry, and to turn around. May we all have the courage to do that today. If nothing else, I think that honors the story of St. Patrick nicely. Kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave only to escape and later turn around with a different strength and mindset to serve the Irish.
In the words of Johnny Lang's Aunt Linda,
"The choices you make might be mistakes But it's never too late to turn around, turn around The road that you take might lead you astray But don't be afraid to turn around, turn around"
We are able to ponder our ashness with some confidence, only because our every Wednesday of ashes anticipates your Easter victory over that dry, flaky taste of death
