"Why don't you just enjoy the simple pleasure of never havin' to work?" (The Artful Dodger 1x04)
Every time I watched this scene, something was itching at me about the way Jack delivered this line. Today, it finally hit me; he says it in his old voice.
In most of the show, Jack speaks more aristocratically. He uses big words, over-enunciates everything, lands hard on consonants, pronounces things like 't', 'ing' & 'ed', etc.
In any other scene, he would have said having. For that matter, he would have said to, not the vague 'da' sound that actually comes out.
Not in this scene, though.
Instead he says it like a street kid from London. Because that's what he is, especially in this moment.
The reminder of his class, his learning disability, and (with Fagin's arrival) his past life of crime, have ripped him right back to childhood. His old accent, or maybe his true accent, slips out like it never left.
I need someone to sit down with Thomas Brodie-Sangster and interview him about every detail of his performance in this show for like ten hours. Oh my gosh.
"Oh to be a man. To not have to beg a lesser mind to please sir can you save my life" I'm sorry she ATE with that. No I'm not accepting any feedback at this time

the artful dodger actually has the perfect formula for a tv show because it's 30% crime show 30% medical drama 30% period drama romance and 10% anachronistic needle drops
I'm going to keep posting about the artful dodger and interacting with posts about the artful dodger and rewatching the artful dodger and talking about the artful dodger and watching edits of the artful dodger and recommending the artful dodger until I have season three safely on my television screen btw
sometimes i remember that belle watched jack hang in front of her and cried and felt betrayed and begged her mother on her knees to save her husband and slapped said husband when he escaped and didnât want to be a mistress and learned a dance and got all dressed up and went to a party just for her sister and would rather be disowned and cast away by her family than watch her lover die and said that a life without him would be a life in the dark and that she wanted to leave this world knowing love fully and wrote letters to her husband in jail every day and watched her mother nearly die and went into the devils elbow so she could save people and saw a girl who had suffered a similar fate to her husbands and took care of her and ran all the way to the harbor in heels and asked when the next ship to rio de jenaro was just so she could follow said husband and had her future threatened by her mother simply bc she loved a man she couldnât have and suffered from an aortic aneurysm her entire life knowing she was going to die and nearly did and watched as her husband almost died by gunshot and was embarrassed by said husband in front of a room full of misogynists and came out stronger and held her own against any man and made several new surgeries including the one that saved her life and worked every day for six months to get her husband out of jail and was told she was wrong even though she knew she was right because âmen know betterâ and saw a girl with the same condition she used to have and tried to help her but failed and had her education dangled in front of her like she was a dog and found out her father wasnt even her real father and that her real father is a dick and lost her confidence in herself after her patient died and saved a woman from arsenic poisoning because she believed in herself and was treated like property her entire life and fell in love with a thief and would rather die than let her husband instead and drank in the dark and could never perform surgery in public and was locked in her room and had to beg a lesser mind to save her life because the only one equal to hers was forbidden from seeing her and collapsed when she realized that she would die in a few hours and thought she was just another thrill for her husband to chase and that he didnât love her fully and thought that death was not the only thing to medicine and that life and hope and love were also important and cried and cried and screamed and hated herself and her mother and who had to make the decision between certainty and love and chose love and throughout all of this stayed kind and thoughtful and sassy and smart and deserves the wo-

Summary: When the team breaks apart after Sentry kicks their asses, Bucky pulls Ava aside.
word count: 1,505
Pairing: thunderbolts!Bucky x thunderbolts!Ava
Warnings/tags: angst angst angst
A/N: this has been sitting in my Google Docs since January lol oops
âNeed that.â
His voice is thick, choked on exhaustion as she blinks quickly, realizing the weight in her arms is not supposed to be there. Ava stifles a chuckle, because the moment is entirely inappropriate. If they all hadnât just gotten their ass beat, maybe she would have laughed at Buckys arm in her hand, now itâs just a bitter reminder. A losers trophy in her grip.
She spins on her heel, lugging it to him. She had never realized how heavy the thing is.
Jaw tight Bucky takes it, his hair brushed over the swollen and cut planes of his right cheek. If she reached out and touched it, would it hurt?
âYou okay?â His question is quiet, and the others donât hear. Itâs meant only for her.
Blue eyes hidden behind thick lashes make her pause, make her movements a bit stunted. Ava nods, looks away as Bucky slips his arm back into place, soft whining from the metal plates that had been forced into his skin.
Alexi tries to rally, tries to gather some sort of limp courage but it falls flat. âWe are a team. We are the Thunderbolts!â
âI donât know what that means.â Bucky mutters with furrowed brows and he looks tired, Ava thinks. He always looks tired.
âItâs her peewee soccer team thing,â Ava sighs, a crick growing in her neck and she rubs at, gloved hand pressing into the tight muscle.
Alexi presses and John snaps, holding up his bent shield in angry protest. Yelena groans, casting her face upwards and Ava examines them, a group of unfiltered, unneeded âherosâ. And heros is a choice word.
Her gaze drifts over the group, skimming faces without settling, until it finds Bucky. Heâs already watching her. His jaw is tight, his brows drawn into something unreadable, and the sight of it stills her breath. The weight of his attention makes her feel bare, as if sheâs stepped into a harsh light she wasnât prepared for, too bright, too revealing.
âOh my god stop!â Yelena yells, and both Alexi and John quiet. âThere is no us, there is no we. Bob changed into that thing, and there is nothing any of you can do about it.â
Anger flares in Avaâs chest, and her hands brace on your belt. â And what did you do exactly? Cuz I seem to remember you getting your ass beat way worse than mine.â
âYeah yeah, I suck,â Yelena snaps, pointing to her chest. âIâm terrible, weâre all terrible. Ava youâre not a hero youâre not even a good person!â
Ava blinks, heat creeping up her neck as her gaze darts away to the floor. She lets out a quick, dismissive scoffâmore reflex than humorâanything to cover the sudden rush of embarrassment.
She doesnât look at him. Canât.
âBitch,â she mutters, and Yelena shrugs, flailing her arms in agreement.
Alexi attempts to reason with Yelena, his voice straining for calm, but the spy snaps back at him, sharp and unyielding. Ava remains silent through it all, weight settled on one hip in a posture that reads as annoyance more than ease. Still, she feels it, feels him. The steady pull of his attention, his gaze lingering, assessing, seeing too much. It crawls under her skin. She doesnât want it, canât afford to want it, and the awareness knots tight in her chest.
When Yelena spits her final insult and stalks off across the street, the tension breaks. Ava turns away, fingers pressing hard against her helmet, as if the pressure might quiet the unease buzzing through her. John stalks away, and she goes to do the same, needing any sort of reprieve she can grasp.
She begins to phase but she feels it; the warm pressure of touch. Pausing, she turns her head, and Bucky is beside her, hand on her upper arm. He silently drags her to a makeshift alcove, hidden from the others and the street thatâs filled with dust.
âYou alright?â He asks, tender, like he cares. She wrinkles her nose immediately.
âIâm fine.â
His blue eyes flick her over face and his human hand brushes one of her bangs out of her face, exposing the bruise on her cheek. âThat hurt?â
âNo,â she murmurs, looking away. âDoes yours?â
Bucky shrugs. âNo.â
âGood.â
âGood.â
They stand beneath the shallow alcove of rock, close enough that the air between them feels charged, too full of all the things neither of them is brave enough to say. The stone above shelters them from the world, but not from each other. Ava looks at Bucky and her chest tightensâ, his expression soft but aware, eyes searching her face like heâs trying to read words he doesnât understand. He opens his mouth, then closes it again, jaw flexing with restraint, as if the words are too heavy to trust to sound. She mirrors him, heart aching with exhaustion, the same quiet longing. Their gazes hold, linger, fracture, saying I feel it too, Iâm scared, please donât make me say it out loud. They both remain, suspended in that fragile state, saying everything in silence because saying it aloud might shatter what little safety they have left.
âIâll go find John,â Bucky says after a moment, not looking at her before he brushes past. Ava feels it in her sternum, that pull to him, that desire to know if heâs hurting or alive or okay.
âIâm glad youâre okay,â she whispers, but he hears it. He pauses, his back to her. âIâmâŠIâm glad Sentry didnât hurt you too badly.â
Buckys head dips, hair brushing over his shoulders. Ava holds her breath, wondering if heâll do the safe thing and ignore her, if heâll look away, pretend she isnât there, fold whatever this fragile, dangerous thing is into a box and seal it shut forever.
She tells herself she wants that. Wants it to die quietly, to shrivel into nothing until itâs only a faint memory, something small and distant from a time when she hadnât felt quite so unbearably alone. But the thought still hurts, sharp and hollow, like mourning something that was never allowed to exist in the first place.
âWhen he grabbed you, I couldnât breathe,â Bucky says slowly. He half turns, his eyes focused on the broken rubble surrounding them. âI know how hard his punches are. I thought, âShe doesnât have the serum. She canât take a hit like thatâ. And then he grabbed you and I couldnât breathe.â He fully turns to her, clenching his jaw so tight she wonders if it hurts. âAnd the worst part is I know youâve been hit harder, that you can take it.â
âBucky-â Ava tries because she needs him to stop, needs him to stop pulling the threads of this fragile thing.
âI donât want that for you,â he shakes his head, hands moving to brace on his hips. âI donât want you to be hit, or grabbed, or alone, ever again.â Her throat feels dry and her skin buzzes in a way that has nothing to do with her phasing. Buckyâs face crumbles and he breathes out through his nose, nods a little. âAnd I donât know what to do with that.â
Ava flexes her gloved hand, the leather creaking under the strain. Her mouth twists, jaw tight, and for a moment she canât bring herself to look at him. When she finally does, her eyes are guarded, brittle.
âNothing,â she says, too quickly. âWe donât do anything.â A breath slips out, sharp and controlled. âWe canât afford to.â
He doesnât flinch at the denial. Instead, he tilts his head just a fraction, his eyes lingering on the rumble like heâs weighing something he wonât sayâsomething he refuses to let surface.
âYou are, by the way,â Bucky murmurs, his tongue running over his teeth. âA good person.â
Ava scoffs softly, the sound coming out sharper than she means it to. She looks away first, like that might break the moment, like distance might make his words lose their shape. Her fingers flex at her side, restless, and she shrugs as if itâs nothing, like it didnât land somewhere deep and tender.
âYeah,â she mutters, dismissive, almost careless. âYou donât know me.â
But her chest feels tight, and she hates that it does. Hates the warmth curling there, the dangerous little spark of wanting to believe him. So she swallows it down, schools her expression into something neutral, and pretends his voice didnât linger, pretends she didnât want it to.
Bucky nods once. âMaybe not. Maybe not well,â he pauses, blows air out and the exhausted look is back on his face. âBut I wanted to.â
He turns and walks away, to find John or maybe just to put distance between them, she isnât sure which. All she knows is the tightness in her chest eases the moment heâs gone, and the relief that washes over her feels almost like guilt, like denying it was the only way either of them knew how to survive it.

Iâm really enjoying the âis Jack committing these murders?â aspect of the artful dodger because, no, heâs not heâs too busy committing every single other crime in that colony to even think about murder
Sneed is a better man than me because if I was only getting 3 hours of sleep a night and had to beg the governorâs wife not to kill one of the two other competent doctors in the colony only for him to fuck off for hours at a time to commit crimes with his fake fucking uncle or trying to get himself hung because he wonât stop hanging out with the only other competent doctor, who heâs not allowed to see, and then I get STABBED⊠Iâd blow up the hospital
