Research suggests that starting school at 10:00 a.m. instead of 8:30 a.m. reduces student illness by half and significantly enhances academic performance.

NOTE TO SELF-SLOW THE FUCK DOWN!
Slow the fuck down is also the way to avoid scams, social engineering, phishing, etc.
"Oh, no the CEO of my employer is having an emergency and I need to click this link right now!!!"
Slow down...
"Why would the CEO be emailing ME of all people? Maybe this email is a phishing attack that would get my employer hacked and me fired for allowing it." (It probably is a phishing email.)
In general, "Slow the fuck down" is an extremely powerful information literacy skill.

Just in case nobody's heard of this before... this is the pain cycle. The idea is that chronic pain feeds on itself and starts a vicious cycle.
You hurt, and it's distressing and scary and you want to avoid hurting yourself more, so you take it easy for a while until you feel better, but during that time alarm bells are still going off and your body is screaming at you something wrong and you're losing strength and flexibility, so you get more nervous and more injury prone and eventually you fall or something and hurt yourself more. Which causes more pain and more anxiety because what you feared was true, you got hurt again and your body is screaming at you that something is wrong, so you decide to rest and take it easy until you're feeling better...
The way I work on keeping myself out of that cycle is trying to give myself other feelings beyond just pain and try to reconnect to my body in a positive way. But you have to start slow, I started exercise just doing a loop around my house and took at least 6 months to take it to three miles. Now I can casually run 3 or 4 miles in my chair, and I get to feel the sun on my face and wind in my hair and my arm muscles working hard to move me.
Living with a disability is like having one of those beater cars where the check engine light is always on and the fuel gage hasn't worked since 1986 but as long as you use percussive maintenance it'll still work. Except instead of a car it's your body and you have to assure people it's fine. You know there's a fluid leak, but it's not flammable or expensive fluid and it will cost more than the car to fix.
Image ID: A chart of a circle made of three arrows. The arrows are red, orange, and blue in clockwise order. The center of the circle reads âChronic Pain Cycleâ. In clockwise order the text reads âPainâ, âAnxiety that pain is signaling tissue damage and harmâ, âBrain becomes more focused on the problemâ, âChange takes place in the nervous systemâ, âMore painâ, âMore anxiety and less movementâ, âMore changes to the nervous systemâ. End ID.
Wow I hate this. It basically boils down to ''your pain isn't that bad, it's all in your head'' and I know you personally might not see it that way, or mean it that way, but that's certainly how it seems to me.
Also, ''your pain is your fault'' and ''you're faking it'' is very much insinuated in that cycle.
No, that's very much not what it's saying. I've been through multiple pain groups that teach this, it's saying that the amount of distress and anxiety being in constant horrible pain naturally causes people to avoid activities that cause pain which causes you to lose muscle memory, strength, and flexibility, which causes you to get hurt again causing even MORE pain and distress.
The pain is real, the injuries are real, the loss of muscle memory is all very real. This is specifically for pain that isn't ever going to go away. It's saying that you need to find a way to get your body moving because sitting and not moving at all causes things like contractures and pressure sores and loss of function and MORE PAIN. Even people in comas have medical professionals come and move their joints and roll them over in bed because of this. It's not exercise or it's all your fault, it's "I know this hurts but not doing anything hurts more"
My pain comes in part from tissue damage and itâs absolutely vital I keep everything moving and avoid those boom and bust cycles. I have similar passive and assisted physio exercises that my carers do them with me every day. âKeep moving even when it feels counter intuitiveâ for me means moving in slow, gentle and safe ways mostly with assistance â not âI canât do Zumba classes so itâs my fault Iâm in painâ , not âI need to push my body to the point of injuryâ and definitely not âthis pain isnât real I need to ignore itâ
When my pain is bad my instinct is to to freeze and keep absolutely still to the extent that even breathing is hard. But itâs really really important that I fight that instinct, breathe as deeply and evenly as possible and move in gentle, safe and controlled ways. Staying absolutely still and frozen and taking shallow irregular breaths is only going to make things worse, even if if feels instinctive and natural and necessary.
Thereâs nothing here even saying that thereâs no place for medication. I have my day to day meds, and taking extra medication is a necessary part of breaking this cycle when it gets to the point where I am trying to take deep breaths and still struggling. Those gentle, controlled, safe movements help get me out of those flares quicker and keeping up that movement in between helps prevent my pain from reaching that point again as frequently.
Briar absolutely knows that chronic pain is real and needs treating and is offering information that has helped them (and me!) manage that very real debilitating pain. This doesnât blame anyone for their pain and Briar would never ever ever imply that chronic pain patients are faking or not trying hard enough or anything like that.
