I've seen a concept of Rocky seeing (well, hearing) YĂĄo and Ilyukhina's ghosts, but what if it is the opposite. What if it's Grace who is able to see the ghosts of Rocky's crew. They are silent and have no mass and therefore are invisible to Rocky, but Grace can see the half-transparent figures crowding protectively around his new alien friend.
What if it's Grace who is able to tell Rocky that his friends are proud of him and don't blame him for not preventing their death. What if it's Grace who is able to tell Rocky that his crew is happy that he survived and they are rooting for him.
What if it's Grace who is able to tell Rocky that there was someone (22 someones, actually) to watch him sleep during those 46 years after all?
We all know Grace is a yapper
But so is Rocky
He never stops talking
They get back to Erid and Rocky introduces Grace and Adrian to each other
And over the first few weeks that Adrian is observing them together, they hear Grace's non-stop yapping
And they just take a moment, and then with nothing but unrestrained (slightly fond) horror, they go "Oh my god there's two of them"
continuing with the bloodymary rambing:
i was talking to my friend about this ship, and at one point during our convo she went "lol what if when they arrive back to erid, adrian gets jealous of rocky and grace's friendship so they adopt simon and is like 'this one is my human'"
this was already a wonderfully hilarious concept. and it got even better when i realized that simon is an engineer and adrian is a scientist. meaning they're grace and rocky BUT ROLESWAPPED. so in my bloodymary list of headcanons, adrian and simon become besties who are both way more serious and yet have have way more dry wit than grace and rocky and it fills me with much joy.
Actually, I don't think Simon would freak out about Rocky wanting to watch him sleep. Simon thinks he's a danger; he's a convict, a murderer and terrorist, of course people watch him while he sleeps, they gotta make sure he doesn't do another murder or whatever. When he finds out it's to make sure he's still alive and well, that it's a show of affection and community, now that'll throw him for a loop.

I see so many hcs of Court being able to approach his brothers no problem, but lets not forget this guy isn't the unfeeling, stoic protagonist everyone thinks he is.
He audibly protested when Cahill shut the trap door on him so he could escape, and even tried to save her before her apartment exploded. This man damn near botched a mission of top priority (to Carmichael) when he saw a kid was present. He insults Lloyd's choice in outfits, jokes about being able to chew gum in Claire's new safehouse (which is more like a prison ngl), and has banter with Miranda when he mistakenly threw her an empty gun. Not just that, but it's obvious his trauma relating to his father's abuse still bothers him (he literally has a flashback when Lloyd tries to drown him in the fountain).
He would do his best to keep a calm exterior, but internally, he's a mess. It's been over 20 years; the last time he saw them, they were just kids. They still think he's holed up in prison cell somewhere, or even dead. He tries his damndest not to cry when he sees how strong and healthy they grew up despite everything. And really, he probably wouldn't have been able to approach them at all if it wasn't for Claire.
Idk I just really like to give human traits to otherwise badass characters like Courtland Gentry/Six
As for Colt and Ryland? Oh, they cry. They're both cryers (this is literally canon to both their characters). Big baby tears.
idea: betas have monthly periods instead of the heats/ruts alphas and omegas have every 3-4 months... something that mostly omegas/alphas doesn't know
So an A/O starts a relationship with a female beta and she explain "...we,betas have this monthly thing..."
Ooh I actually have this headcanon for my omegaverse ^u^ (I even make my male betas have periods because I am the Woker)
An A/O partner would be SO worried at first thinking that a period would like, KILL a beta. Like the blood spewing out was important blood (I mean all blood is important but.... You know what I mean) they would wake up and see blood down in their spouse's pants and start screaming đ
After being explained what a period was, an Omega and Alpha would have different reactions.
The alpha would be taking down notes and whenever it comes around they are spending their ENTIRE account on their Beta's favorite snacks in the world and getting every pain medication on earth. Alpha would give Beta one of those bell things that they would shake whenever they needed their alpha.... The moment Beta expresses and sort of pain the Alpha is there with heating pads and chocolate bars! Alphas would be getting one of those flipping stuffies that show different emotions to know whether or not to be scared of their beta mate or not
An Omega would have a better understanding. Heats (emotionally) aren't too different from a period (besides the excessive horniness but it isn't as insane in my AU....). But Omega would still be VERY protective of their beta during Beta's period. Omega wouldn't even leave Beta's side. Omega's are naturally pretty hot so when Beta is having a cramp Omega would be against Beta's tummy. I can see Omega coming home (after begrudgingly leaving their mate....) and seeing Beta using a heating pad and getting SUPER jealous. Like hello....you have one RIGHT HERE!
If a heat/rut syncs up that also is more fun as the protectiveness would go up! An alpha would get jealous super easily, growling at about everyone that tries to speak to their Beta.
Unless you are one of their children, you must be looking for a fight if you linger around an omega's beta.

current favorite pre bedtime scenario to imagine is Tom Ryder meeting Courtland mother fucking Gentry and being intimidated as hell. It's called a shovel talk for a reason and Court Means It when he says he'll bury Tom if he has to
The thing is, Ryland doesn't really know why Tom is so terrified of Court. The first time Court saw Tom was when Ryland invited him to dinner with Colt to catch upâand Tom wasnât even there.
At dinner, after Court cut up his chicken as if he were six years old againâ"Some habits are hard to break, Ry." "I donât know what youâre laughing at, Colt; you asked me to open your juice bottle less than a minute ago"âRyland felt he could finally open up to his older brother about Tom. Court didnât say much, simply nodding every few minutes as Ryland recounted how his relationship with Tom started, their first date, and how Tom was trying to be kinder to Colt.
After that, Court himselfâwhich was strange, considering his usual personalityâwas the one who insisted on inviting Tom to a family lunch. That was the only time Tom ever met his family. But it seems Court has a deeply intimidating gaze, because Tom canât stop shaking or jumping whenever he hears Ryland mention his older brother, hears Courtâs voice on the phone, or finds out from Colt that Court is visiting their flat.
Ryland knows his brother is stern, but heâs definitely not rude. The only time they met, Court offered him a beer, listened attentively to what he had to say, andâto both Ryland and Coltâs surpriseâactually served him his portion of lunch himself.
Maybe Tom is just feeling shy. After all, Ryland only knows Birdie, Tomâs older sister, and she isâto put it mildlyâthe complete opposite of Court. Thatâs probably all it is.
Of course, what Ryland doesn't know is that Court managed to corner Tom while he and Colt were washing the lunch dishes. He grabbed him by the shoulder and whispered not only everything he knew about him, but also everything he knew about Birdie âall his and her dirty little secrets from their youth.
He went on about how he had an incredibly precise and lethal file on Tomâs medical conditions and past addictionsâhe did congratulate him, though, just to be cordial about his first years of sobrietyâand how he knew exactly how much bullying he had put Colt through at work.
Court also made sure to stress that, if he so wished, he could make him disappear without a trace; all it would take was for him to find out that Ryland had cried because of Tom.
He added that he didn't even need to kill or torture him to make him suffer, and that he would much prefer this little "friendly chat" to remain a secret.

Lowkey thinking about the parallels between Rylandâs âmean academicâ attitude during college/academia and how the Coltland Gentryâs version of his father would have acted. (In context of their dad being like Court describes in The Gray Man)
Ryland was probably their dadâs LEAST favorite cause he didnât live up to âmacho manâ expectations, but that didnât mean he didnât pick up any habits from him. Imagine him getting fired being the wake up call because during his rant to Colt about getting let off from his job, Colt canât stop looking at him like he looked at their dad.
It would make sense for him to have such a rapid turn around to what we see in the movie, he didnât want to be ANYTHING like his dad. Sure he still has some sass, heâs still Ryland after all, but there definitely is a reason he called the head of his field a staggering waste of carbon instead of doing literally anything else.
Donât talk to me Iâm thinking about the way that Sandra HĂźller managed to show how Eva Stratt was begging Grace not to make her force him. Every-time I see the look in her eyes she is screaming and crying and sobbing in her mind please donât make me force you please let us part on good terms please
For all that I've seen a lot of PHM posts that go on about 'patron saint of [blank]' for Ryland Grace, I don't think I've seen any that address what amounts to the scientific version of that: Mother of/Father of.
In order to be considered for the title of Mother of/Father [scientific field], you have to be the first to make significant contribution in that field. You're setting the groundwork in a way nobody else has. This can obviously cause a lot of debate in the end about who gets the title! That said, I think given the leaps and bounds that Grace makes in several fields of science that take them from the more theoretical to the practical gives him some notable options with strong arguments. So we've got options like: Father of Astrobiology (the discovery and study of Astrophage, Taumoeba, several other forms of life on Adrian, and the study of and first interactions with the Eridians; disproving the Goldilocks zone as the only area viable for life; making significant strides in proving the panspermia hypothesis), Father of Xenolinguistics (first person to create working translator and archive of an alien language), and Father of Interstellar Travel (this would be a title held alongside Dr. Dmitri Komorov, likely with Komorov being listed first, and there would be significant debate on if Grace should hold the title at all. I like to think Dmitri would want to share it though).
All workable cases, all real options. Buuuuut I think my very favorite option though would be the one that is the least open to debate and is the one that I honestly think Grace himself would like best: Father of First Contact.
Because on the one hand, yeah, that's a lot he was mostly doing. First contact with Astrophage, with the Taumoeba, with other life on Adrian, and most of all with the Eridians. The first ever intelligent form of life outside of Earth, he made First Contact with. He found ways to communicate, to establish common ground, to work alongside an alien being. He did something no one else on Earth had ever done before and changed the world with it. He made First Contact and saved the world.
But mostly that means there's a whole field of science that Grace's name is attached to forever because he got to meet his friend. Mostly, Father of First Contact is just a fancy way to say "I love my friend."
Tw child abuse (canonically from the grey man)
I see this a lot in Coltlandgentry fics, that itâs just assumed that Ryland was the one their dad was waterboarding. While that adds a bit more angst to Rylandâs story and a protective big-brother aspect to Colt and Court, I feel like weâre missing out on it being Colt, with Ryland in the corner, staring and unmoving, begging and crying for his dad to stop, and then Court makes him stop. Being the coward he thinks he is because he wouldnât do the thing that needed to be doneâ the thing Court had to do.
Or maybe it doesnât matter whether it was Colt or Ryland. Maybe it was both of them: one passed out on the floor, aspirating with water in his lungs or punched so hard he couldnât think, while the other was slowly drowned. Maybe it doesnât matter because Court had created a reality where it was him, always him, only him under his fatherâs fists, and now thatâs broken, and heâll do whatever it takes to make sure they survive.
Maybe if you asked Colt or Ryland who it was their brother killed their father for, they wouldnât be able to answer. Because trauma does funny things to memories, and Colt and Ryland come as a pair, and they both think itâs their fault anyway.
Maybe if youâd asked Courtâ the only person who was able to tell Ryland and Colt apart when they were youngâ who he killed their father for, heâd say, âMy baby brother.â Because it didnât matter whether it was Colt or Ryland; his father was murdering his baby brother, and by the time the cops came and handcuffed him in the back of a car, all he knew was that they were safe and whoever was in the back of that ambulance would live.
Ok but also can we talk about how often Ryland Grace cries?
He cries when he is happy.
He cries when he is sad.
He cries when he is scared.
This is beautiful. He is the co-saviour of two entire planets. He is the superest of super heros. And he's just a normal guy. He is a SCIENTIST and a TEACHER. He is humble and filled with doubts and insecurities, he is terrified of doing something wrong and he is very emotional about that all of the time and I think that is beautiful.
Thank you Andy Weir for giving us this wonderful hero, and thank you Ryan Gosling for bringing him to life in such a poignant and human way.

i'm currently re-watching PHM (surprise surprise) and trying to take note of all the Earth scenes, ie all of Grace's memories that come back
unreliable narrator or not, we know for a fact that everything that's happened on Earth is shown to us through the lens of Grace's eyes. he's our only source of information, after all
so. like. that means. he sees Eva Stratt as the playful, neurodivergent, stoic, pragmatist who sniffs hackeysacks and says "weemp weemp" during her presentation.
he could have many other interpretations of this Eva Stratt character who kidnapped him from his school and made him analyse the Petrova samples and kidnapped him again to live in the Stratt Vat and kidnapped him one last time to be sent to space
Eva Stratt could very well be a strict asshole who never smiles and has horns and fangs and blood red skin. She could be an unsmiling, uncaring, unbothered twat and we'll never know it
because in the eyes of Ryland Grace, she is this strict German woman who, yes, kidnapped him for all the reasons stated above, but also
she smiles. she tilts her head whenever she's confused about something. she furrows her brows if she disagrees with something presented to her. she encourages her people to do their best, and recognises the effort they make. she makes people clap. she cannot live without her two coffees.
she says she's not good with jokes but it doesn't stop her from being playful. she denies being mysterious. she orders you to take a compliment. she says "weemp weemp" as she points to the fuel tanks in the hail mary ship.
she sings a song for her loved ones, telling them to remember everything's gonna be alright
the point is, We the Audience love Eva Stratt, as how Ryland Grace loved her. because the only Eva Stratt we know, is the Eva Stratt he loves.
i wanna talk more about ryland "i like to put up walls in my relationships anyway" grace, who is extremely sociable and likable on the one hand, and yet so very alone and alienated on the other.
because yes! he gets along with people quite well and they like and (especially if you refer to book canon) put a lot of trust in him on a professional and personal level. but i would argue that trust is not mutual! he likes people, he jokes with them, supports them, makes them feel at ease. he is attached to everyone on the petrova taskforce but he doesnt really open up any emotional attack surface where it comes to himself (bar a couple minor examples, like movie!grace talking to stratt about the party; but also, he still talks about those feelings in a way that is detached from himself, "its such a weird party"). he doesnt connect with anyone on a truly (emotionally) intimate level - and that is why he stays isolated, that is why he gets a singular polaroid depicting only himself while ilyukhina and yao get entire albums!
anyway it's important to me that grace's arc is not just about becoming brave in the grander, "heroic selflessness" sense, but about learning to open up and allowing himself to become emotionally vulnerabie. phm is great because it asks: would you overcome your fear of genuine vulnerability to connect with someone and let them truly see your heart if the world depended on it?
grace answers this question with a resounding yes.
