this is actually a perfect comparison, not only because of the songs going viral to the point of oversaturation, but also because of the meaning of the songs themselves.

Golden and Let It Go went viral mostly for their catchy tunes and insane vocals, props to Idina Menzel and Ejae. but they got so popular that people started associating these songs with their respective characters, Elsa and Rumi, even though canonically, these songs aren't meant to represent them at all.

Let It Go isn't a power anthem where Elsa finally breaks free. it's an unhealthy coping mechanism. Elsa thinks that she's finally free to do whatever, but she's actually just pushing away relationships and denying herself connection and vulnerability, because she thinks that she might hurt people again. what she needed was to find a balance between using her powers and keeping people around.

similarly, while Golden on the surface also feels like a power anthem, this is yet another song about unhealthy coping mechanisms. Golden is a song about Rumi repressing her demon side and pushing herself to the brink, just so that she could turn the honmoon golden and hypothetically banish her demon side. it's disguised as a self-love anthem but it's actually just a façade that Rumi puts up in front of everyone.

both these songs are the representation of the character's worst impulses and insecurities. they're not supposed to be representative of these characters themselves.

What It Sounds Like is a better representation of Rumi's character, as she finally learns to embrace all of her and create a new honmoon that isn't rooted in prejudice and shame.

and while Elsa doesn't really have another song that represents her character growth in the first movie, Show Yourself from the second movie is probably a better representation of Elsa and her development. (it's been a while since i first watched Frozen 2 so my memory is a bit foggy)

instead ask:

is it SINCERE

was it CATHARTIC

was it FUN TO MAKE

is it MADE BY ME

I don't have any cool ideas for "9" tributes really, but I wanted to convey a more stationary and calm feeling. This one is based on one of the concepts I made last year where Nine takes a nap sitting on a calendar. Happy Nine day everyone :')

Shane acker's 9 turns 15 years today! Which is just insane for me to think about. I joined the fandom in early 2010 and it has been my favorite film ever since. 9 is what inspired me to get into art and animation at a young age, and here I am today with a full-time animation job. It's all thanks to this weird film and the talented people behind it that inspire me.

I will say that I do miss the golden years of the 9-fandom during the 2009-2012 era, I have so many memories of the forum and deviantart and youtube fan-content that will stay with me forever. But I'm happy to see new people still discovering the film so many years later.
