This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capitalâŚ
Listen, this is serious.
Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!
It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.
Like, itâs literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.
So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?
Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.
Oh, and while weâre talking about books, if youâve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely donât go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately theyâre completely free.
nooo donât use sites that make academic papers accessible to everyone, why would you do such a terrible thing
hello there! i would like to ask if you know any sites where i can practice reading japanese? like news sites, manga sites, or sites that offer free e-books that are in japanese. and are there any japanese podcasts that i can listen to? thank you in advance for answering this question. it'd mean a whole to me!
Hey there! There are actually quite a few recommended sites for Japanese learners, so Iâll link them right now :)
Japanese IO â Iâve used this site quite a few times and I love the interface! The design is really sleek and âto the point,â so thereâs no distractions from what youâre trying to do, which is practice reading Japanese. It also has a great library and look-up feature.
ććĽĺŚçć°č礞 â This is the âkidâs versionâ of the more adult ććĽć°č礞. If you donât feel that youâre quite up for the adult version, test out the version geared towards kids. They have fewer articles, but thereâs plenty for a learner to pick through.
NHK NEWS EASY â Iâm almost positive this is one of the most famous ones for learners. Itâs similar to Asahiâs kid newspaper â articles are condensed with easier kanji and vocabulary, and itâs geared towards children, so learners can spend some time combing through updated articles and testing their skills.
Yahoo! Kids â More short news articles geared towards easier-to-understand Japanese.
MATCHA â A fun magazine similar in style to NHK EZ.
Watanoc â Another magazine-type site with a variety of articles.
Traditional Japanese Stories â Get your hands on some easily printed Japanese stories that are told to children. Great for language skills and culture! Similar to English pop culture stories (like Cinderella and so on), Japan has its own fairytales that are occasionally referenced.
Fuku Musumeâs Fairy Tale Collection â More stories!
World of ăă§ăłăă§ăł â These are beginner stories, but as you progress you can read other stories on this website.
EhonNavi â Read hundreds of Japanese picture books for free!
If youâre looking for more advanced contentâŚ
NHK â Japanâs national broadcaster. You can read articles as well as stream audio and video (may be blocked depending on location).
ćŻćĽć°č â Moderate/left-leaning national newspaper
ććĽć°č â Left-leaning national newspaper
čŞĺٞć°č â Conservative national newspaper
ćąć´çľć¸ăŞăłăŠă¤ăł â A well-known business and finance magazine.
Project Gutenberg (Japanese) â Get access to a ton of out-of-print and classical books for free.
ĺ°čŞŹĺŽśăŤăŞăă â A site where authors can publish their works online in exchange for reviews.
é犺ć庍 â Another site where you can get older and out-of-print novels.
University of Virginia Japanese Text Initiative â Another place to access novels in Japanese for free (with the option to read them with furigana).
ComicWalker â Free manga from the publisher Kadokawa. Thereâs an app too!
ćĺçˇ â You can read some manga online for free.
ăłăăł â More free Japanese manga available here!
ăăăŞă â A womanâs lifestyle blog which covers fashion, cooking, decor, and more!
Magazine Lib â You can read PDFs of Japanese magazines.
1000ćĺĺ°čŞŹ â A place where users can submit 1000 characters or less stories.Â
I also highly recommend starting a Twitter (if you donât already have one) and following Japanese accounts. I follow a lot of feminist and political accounts so that Iâm learning words relevant to my interests, as well as interacting with people that are discussing topics of interest to me (i.e. women and their place in Japanese society).
If youâre curious, you can find me on Twitter at @sydney0313 :)
I hope this list proves useful to you! (And others.)

Bringing this back because I think we all need it, especially with 2020 coming to an end
I introduced myself once before but fell of the wagon once the new academic year started, so here I am⌠again, with a revamped theme & look. I´m Bee (22, she/her, scorpio) and I´m a Communications student from The Netherlands. The course is very broad, so Iâm still trying to decide what I want to focus on, but at this point graphic design seems to be one of the top contenders. Iâm also interested in PR and marketing.Â
Iâm mostly here to keep myself motivated and I found I do better with friends, so Iâm definitely looking for some active blogs to follow and hopefully chat a bit!Â
i n t e r e s t sÂ
- reading. iâm trying to get back into reading for fun. started in january but sadly havenât picked up a book in months now, but iâm always looking for recommendations to fill my dauntingly long TBR. - true crime. podcasts! documentaries! books! idk why, but it intrigues me so much. i think iâve watched everything available on netflix. - writing. when i was younger, i used to be full of stories and poems and dreamt about getting a book published. i donât know how, but i think i lost that somewhere along the way. now, i dabble on some RP sites but nothing seems to come naturally anymore. one of my goals for 2021 is to find that creativity again! - music. i play piano and sing. i am mediocre at playing the ukulele and bought a guitar years ago that i still donât know how to play. i also spend way too much time listening to hamilton on spotify.Â
g o a l sÂ
- do better. i am struggling! results wise, iâm doing fine. my grades are great. i know i like communications. i have fought very hard to be where i am today. but it just doesnât feel like i have any passion. iâm trying to find that. and writing it down and posting it here for everyone to see hopefully keeps me accountable.Â
- be productive. study smarter, not harder, or, you know, longer. trying to find more ways to study, more places to find information. iâm also here for the masterposts lol.Â
- find friends. being motivated is easier together. thatâs why iâm here - to see everyone else trying their best as well. and maybe talk to some people! i had this idea of starting a group chat (on discord, probably) to stay accountable and talk to people who are also focused on their studies. let me know if thatâs something people would be interested in :).Â

this picture isnât from today since iâve been all over the place trying to get things done (i took this one monday afternoon but forgot to post) and my workspace has been pretty messy too :â)
itâs technically 12/11 now cuz itâs 1am. iâve been up finishing some assignments (one of which i partially messed up and had to spend hours editing) but iâm just happy to be able to get to bed now. tomorrow i have a chemistry test, a proposal + research for an independent project due, and an essay for english due. iâll be happy once the weekend is here so i can focus more on my hobbies!
hope you all are getting more sleep than i am lol
12 // 4 // 20
just a little comparison between my japanese and chemistry notes! although both are pretty simple, you can tell that i definitely take my time much more with japanese than i do with my other subjects lol
i got a lot done today! i did a decent amount of chemistry work and got almost all of my assignments due monday done. iâm trying to schedule out my time a lot more this week, but itâs hard when iâm uncertain about so many approaching plans with family.
hope everyone has a nice weekend <3
12 // 3 // 20
i actually got quite a lot done today, despite getting distracted quite often and having my power go out for an hour :P
i submitted an essay draft and a lab worksheet, did my french assignment, and got half of my webassign done! the chemistry stuff exhausted me, so iâm excited to get to bed early tonight.
i didnât have any good pictures of my work (it was all incredibly messy) so here are two books iâve been reading a lot lately. on top is Julie Otsukaâs When the Emperor Was Divine, the novel iâm writing my essay on, which i highly recommend reading. the second book is The Cambridge Companion to Modern Japanese Culture edited by Yoshio Sugimoto. itâs also a great read that i recommend to anyone studying japanese who wants a fresh perspective on japanese culture!
i havenât posted in a really long time, so hopefully iâll keep it up after today :)
i speak french in public to my grandparents and to my boyfriend. people are surprised that im bilingual and say its cool and ask me to teach them some time
but when one of my classmates speaks arabic in public to her family, she gets strange and disgusted looks. no one asks to be taught arabic. no one says its cool that shes bilingual
its racism plain and simple
this is a problem that goes unnoticed too often please fucking fix it.
French is probably one of the most beatiful languages in the world, whilst arabic, for all itâs intricacies and history.. is not.. French is also way more useful to know in a western society than arabic, so to jut it all down to racism is a bit hasty
im fluent in french and god is it the most useless language i have ever known. i only speak fluent conversations with like. two people. i dont know any native french speakers in the us beside my grandparents and honestly i dont think they exist. its an ugly language once you speak it fluently anyways and its just weird english people who think its pretty
but arabic thoughâŚâŚmy friend speaks it a lot. she speaks it with her immediate family. despite her talking in english at school, she knows many out-of-town people who speak arabic. the circle of people she can speak arabic to is huge. its a very useful language, especially considering the refugees coming in. theres not even anything particularly bad sounding about it?Â
so its racism. arabic is primarily spoken by middle eastern people. french is primarily spoken by white people. my middle eastern friend gets strange and disgusted looks for speaking her language. my white ass gets praised for speaking mine. its racismÂ
but sureâŚ.go excuse racismâŚ..getting strange and disgusted looks for speaking a middle eastern language is totally because its ââânot usefulâââ and ââânot beautifulâââÂ
buddy is like: âiâve been taught to find European things beautiful and therefore itâs just objectively true.â
So I found this cool website for learning ancient languages
go wild
holy fuck
I just did a quick perusal of the Coptic resources on this site, and it has all the resources Iâve personally found worthwhile and then some. These are resources that took me months, if not years, to discover and compile. I am thoroughly impressed. The other languages featured on the site are:
Akkadian
Arabic
Aramaic
Church Slavonic
Egyptian (hieroglyphics and Demotic)
Elamite
Ethiopic (Geâez)
Etruscan
Gaulish
Georgian
Gothic
Greek
Hebrew
Hittite
Latin
Mayan (various related languages/dialects)
Old Chinese
Old English
Old French
Old Frisian
Old High German
Old Irish
Old Norse
Old Persian
Old Turkic
Sanskrit
Sumerian
Syriac
Ugaritic
For the love of all the gods, if you ever wanted to learn any of these languages, use this site.
Likely helpful for various recon-oriented polytheists.
Iâve always wanted to learn Latin, Greek and Mayan, but this made me realize there are lot more languages to choose from, whatever tickles your fancy! I need 10 new notebooks and probably thousands of cute stationaries right now.

since school is starting up again: pirate your textbooks!! my fave for this is library genesis. the most functional extension as of right now is libgen.is but literally whatever works. search by title, or better yet by ISBN to make sure you have the right edition, downloadâŚ& profit. english majors make sure youâre searching in the right section (fiction will, obviously, have novels & poetry, but the default is sci-tech). i have a more in-depth post here too if you want to share your free texts with your classmates. go ham
how to survive bad school days, from morning till night
my last year of high school starts rather soon, and iâve had more than my fair share of days when i wake up wanting to cry. there arenât many things you can do when obligations like school force you to get over it as soon as it starts, so here are some tips to make your day better.
1. dress opposite the way you feel. even though sweats might be super tempting, dress up. wear your favorite pair of jeans, or a dress, or your cutest sneakers, even. wear bright colors at least. sweatpants and such will just make you feel even more blah and unfocused throughout the day.Â
2. moisturize! this might seem like an odd idea, but moisturizing and going into school glowy and soft definitely helps me feel more comfortable and less ugh during the school day. it helps keep me in my home-y comfort zone, if that makes sense.Â
3. carry something from home. this can be a book (even if you donât read it), a tube of chapstick, a big waterbottle, etcâŚÂ i have even gone as far as wrapping myself in a small blanket and walking around like that for the day. if you like this option and donât feel comfortable wearing it, fold it up and place it in your backpack, just so you know itâs there.
4. plan out your day. even if itâs just making a mental note, tell and remind yourself of the things your going to do and when. this will get rid of any unnecessary stress and pressure. if something unexpected comes up, this will also help you manage your time a little better.
5. eat and drink happy things! pick today to pack a lunch, no matter what your usual routine is. drink plenty of water throughout this day, and eat as many fruits and veggies as you can. fill a reusable water bottle with water, fruit (like lemon or strawberries), and chia seeds! itâs perfect to sip throughout the day for a reboot or just to boost your mood.Â
6. when you get home, bathe immediately! wash off the dayâs dirt. drop everything as soon as you get home, and either jump in the shower or relax in a bath with your favorite soaps and scents and a book. give yourself a break before you have to get back to work.
7. donât ignore your work. by work, i mean school work. if youâre having a bad day, donât hesitate to take a break from talking to people or running (low-priority) errands. you donât want to ignore schoolwork, though, because teachers arenât the most lenient people in the world, and getting it done will take a lot off of your shoulders. pushing it away will only gain you more bad days.Â
8. go to bed. get sleep! you want to be refreshed and happy for the next day, even if itâs a weekend. thereâs a good chance your bad day began because you didnât get enough sleep, or because you were ripped out of bed. reward yourself with rest after a long day.Â
Classical Language Learning Masterpost
Iâm not studying any Greek or Roman this coming year (I sacrificed intro classical languages for gender & history), but I will be doing a Roman history module and engaging with the language is always useful. I know a few people who have been looking for Greek/Latin learning resources, which is how this list came about. It includes MOOCs, youtube videos and websites. Not really knowing much Latin or Greek I canât vouch for them 100% but my googling skills are pretty on point, so they should be okay. Feel free to correct me or add to this.
Latin
Getting started on classical Latin

How to remain productive with online classes:
A few tips from a broke neuro-divergent academic
Try and wake up early, and go to bed early too. Iâm not saying get up at 5 (unless thatâs youâre thing) but sleeping into noon is a productivity blackhole. I go for 8 or 8:30, generally, but thatâs just what works for me.
Get dressed for the day. Iâm not talking like, jeans and a business casual outfit, but a clean pair of sweatpants, fresh underwear, and a new shirt can really put you in the mood for a new morning.
Have a workspace. Whether it be the kitchen table, a desk, a spot on the floor with a lap desk, have a place thatâs dedicated to your work. Have items that signify that workspace too, like your book, planner, laptop, lamp, whatever. It can help you get into the zone, being in that space.
Have a morning drink. I choose earl grey tea with honey and cream, but black coffee, herbal tea, lemon water, whatever works for you is awesome, as long as itll wake you up and start your day.
To do lists. To do lists and to do lists and more to do lists. I have three. One is a post it weekly planner deal (3.99 at a local grocery store). itâs a weekly spread already set up, and if youâre anything like me, its really hard to set up a weekly spread. Then I have an app called Ike. I have a daily to do list I write on that app, and then I have four more to-do lists of what I have to for each specific class.
Spread out your assignments. Donât overwhelm yourself. If youâre professors are like mine, and have the due date for each module as Sunday at midnight. What I do is spread out all my assignments from Monday to Saturday, and I leave Sunday blank, so anything I didnât do that week, I finish on Sunday. It works for me, it might work for you.
Have a folder for each class, and a notebook for each class. I hate spending money, Iâm broke as hell, sono al verde as the Italians say, but a 0.99 cent folder and a 0.25 cent notebook can do wonders for motivating one to fill them up.
Study with a drink. Tea, water, coffee, whatever, but my go to is generally a warm drink. I cannot study if Iâm cold, I get tired and groggy, so warm socks, a robe, and a hot drink really keep me going.
Take breaks. Make time for your hobbies, for something fun. Working without stopping absolutely destroys my motivation, and let me tell you, when I feel like that, an episode of Avatar and a snack gets me right back on the wagon.
Do self check ins. Does your back hurt? Are you sad? Stressed? Do you have to pee? Are you hungry? Never put your homework over your health. You wonât be able to get anything done well anyway if youâve got those blocks.
Most importantly, get enough sleep. I beg of you. Sleep is so important, and itâs the game changer, at least to me. We as students have such an amazing opportunity to get more sleep than we ever have before during the year. Take advantage of that.
the no bullshit guide to getting your shit together: for the lazy student
Letâs be honest: time management and organization? Theyâre really hard. Sure, at first you might feel like youâve gotten the hang of them, that youâre in control of your life. But how often have you fallen off the wagon? Procrastinated on one thing and the next moment, youâre behind in all your classes? I know that sometimes laziness feels like a part of who you are, but honestly, fuck that. Do you really want to give up your success for the disinterest of a moment?
If your answer is no (it better be no, or you really need to get your priorities straight), letâs get to it.Â
STEP ONE: BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF
âThis class doesnât even matter.â âI donât care about my grades.â âI can finish this the day before.â Sound familiar? You might feel great now, but when youâre staring down at your report card later, itâll feel like you just got punched.Â
This is a cliche, but the greatest obstacle to your success is yourself - especially the lies you tell yourself! Sit yourself down and be honest about what you need to improve on. Be as blunt as you can, but for godâs sake, donât throw yourself a pity party! Thereâs no use agonizing over what you canât change. Instead, set realistic, achievable goals, and make a game plan. Struggling with math? Go to extra help. Behind in all your classes? Stay in for a couple nights and actually work.Â
STEP TWO: STOP WITH THE FANCY SHIT
Now you know what your goals are, but maybe you want some inspiration, so you log on to tumblr and are instantly bombarded by all these beautiful, well lit shots of the most gorgeous bullet journals, planners, and notes. Impressive, right? Well, Iâm gonna let you in on a little secret: theyâre all useless! A simple phone planner works just as well, if not better, than a fancy agenda, because youâll always have it on you, itâs not a hassle to carry around, and you donât feel obligated to make it look pretty.Â
Riddle me this, where are you going to find all this extra motivation to keep prettying up your bullet journal? To write all your notes in perfect, colour coded printing? There arenât many times in life where taking the easy was out will actually benefit you, so take advantage! Stop wasting your time; get a phone planner and write your notes in your natural goddamn handwriting.Â
STEP THREE: CLEAN YOUR ROOM
Yep, your entire room - not just your study space! This one can be put on the back burner for a bit if youâre on a really pressing deadline, but I wouldnât recommend it. Iâm notoriously messy, and if I donât watch myself, Iâd find myself in dirty-laundry-and-old-notes hell. A little bit of organized chaos is fine, I even encourage it! But try working when your desk is covered in mounds of paper and you have nowhere to put your laptop â itâs just not conducive to success.Â
Keeping your entire room clean is a way to stave off stress, frustration, and even embarrassment, because nobody wants to show potential roommates how much of a mess they are.Â
STEP FOUR: ACTUALLY WORK
Yeah, I know what youâre thinking: âactually work? Who does this girl think she is?â Iâd probably think the same thing, except Iâve learned the valuable lesson of sucking it the hell up, and you will too. When you get home from work, grab a snack and work. When you have a free period, figure out whatâs due and work. Stop reasoning yourself out of work: youâre not going to finish this later, and that will be on the test. Thereâs really not much to say about this one, because itâs the step that requires the most raw effort, and youâre really only going to find that within yourself. Tell yourself whatâs at stake, and realize that, by setting the standard for your mediocrity now, youâre potentially trapping yourself in a cycle that will last for years.Â
STEP FIVE: CUT YOURSELF SOME SLACK
Maybe youâve been on top of your shit for a day, a week, or even a month, and thatâs really great. But then⌠you fail. You miss a deadline or you bomb a test. So what do you do now? Do you allow yourself to fall back into your old habits? Fuck no! Everyone fails, even that studyblr with those perfect bullet journal photos and a perpetually clean study space. Iâm going to tell you something thatâll sound really strange: you should value your failures, especially if you worked hard to avoid them. What?! Be HAPPY about failing when I actually TRIED? Yeah, you heard me right. If you donât know how to handle failure, then when you inevitably experience it, your reaction will be much worse.Â
Failing hurts, and boy, I know how embarrassing it can be. But learning how to deal with failure, and especially how to keep trying after it happens, is an invaluable lesson.Â
STEP SIX: TREAT. YO. SELF.
Disclaimer: Iâm not suggesting you treat yourself after the most basic of tasks, because please. Treat yourself when you know you goddamn well deserve it. Remember that âall work and no play makes jack a dull boy.â If all you do is study and do your homework, then, pardon my french, your life sucks. If you donât have friends, play a video game! Eat an entire jumbo chocolate bar! Indulge in whatever the fuck you want, you deserve it. Iâm someone that has trouble prioritizing future benefits over immediate gratification, so by allowing myself little pleasures, I save myself from crashing and burning.Â
Hope these tips helped, but remember to take them with a grain of salt - youâre you and Iâm me, and different things work for different people. Good luck!

âI hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.â Â Â Â Â Â â ConfuciusÂ
the curve of forgetting
the curve of forgetting describes how we retain or get of information we absorb.
day 1: you go into a lecture knowing 0% and come out knowing 100% of what you know (regardless of whether you know it extremely well or not)
day 2: you did not do any reviewing of your notes from day 1 therefore you have lost 50%-80%
and as the days progress we forget less and less
think about midterms! notice how around midterms when youâre trying to study for something (that you havenât been reviewing for regularly) it feels like the material is VERY difficult and almost as if youâve never learned it before
formula to reshape the curve
within 24 hours of your lecture spend 10 minutes reviewing the material
a week later: it will only take 5 minutes to REACTIVATE the same material
ultimately, you will reshape the curve Â
day 30: by this day your brain will only need 2-4 minutes to recall
information on the curve of forgetting was taken from the university of waterloo (x)
my formula to reshape the curve using the information above
before class: spend 10 minutes PREVIEWING the material.Â
after class: spend 10 minutes REVIEWING the material
do this regularly. this will be your preview/review system for each class.
a week later: try to review a week later. i know that school/life can get pretty hectic, but try to make sure you are reviewing regularly.
maybe record yourself saying some important details/concepts from your notes the night before and on your daily commute to school plug in those earphones and listen to it. i am an auditory learner and i find that listening to my notes before i go to bed and right when i wake up have truly helped me retain information. studies have shown that the best time to study is right before going to bed and right when you wake up.
a month later: after a month, review what youâve learned so far in your class. trust me this will be a very very short review. everything will look very familiar to you and it wonât look as difficult as it used to.
basically your review schedule should be the following:Â
1 hour before learning the material
1 hour after learning the material (or within 24 hours of learning it b/c i know weâre all very busy people)
1 day later
1 week later
1 month later
remember everyone learns, studies, and retains information differently!! my personal belief is that your technique is what matters most. it is not about your innate ability/talent. find a technique that works for you.
more suggestions:
active learning > passive learning
when taking notes use the Cornell method. it forces you to ask questions and summarize what youâve learned.
set frequent, short, review sessions
test yourself constantly! there are so many resources online.Â
people who are under stress have difficulty remembering things so CHILL OUT
donât rush, take your time
repetition is key
practice MAKES PERFECT
group items together
fish, vitamin b12, and green tea can help w/ memory
donât give up. like morrissey said âthese things take time.â
good emotional skills to know 4 college but also in general
this is stuff that iâve found helpful and am in the process of working on. they may not be achievable for you without help and may not work for your specific circumstance, but this is a list of suggestions that you might be able to think about. i am also not a mental health professional so please do feel free to contradict me!!
self soothing. having a toolbox to take care of yourself by yourself. bc sometimes nobody else is available and you just gotta put some lotion on, listen to a tune, and go to bed early.Â
checking in. checking in with yourself to see if youâre okay. knowing how to alter your strategies when your strategies arenât working. knowing when your strategies arenât working. this is just taking some time every day to reflect on what goals you didnât meet and why and what you can do to fix that.
thereâs nothing you âshouldâ be doing. if you get caught up thinking âi should be doing xâ thatâs false! stop that! âshouldâ be doing better implies that you have some obligation to do whatever it is that you âshouldâ be doing. you donât owe anybody except yourself. analyze why you think you should be doing that thing and change that intoâŚ. âi want to be doing x becauseâŚâ or âdoing x will make me happier, becauseâŚâ. overall, more productive and less self-shamey.Â
disconnecting from the crowd. eating in a crowded dining hall can be stressful! knowing how to be alone in a crowd and stay calm is helpful
being okay with being alone.  tbh college is kind of⌠being alone a lot, in my experience. even though youâre surrounded by people, a lot of time is spent alone. making friends is hard. your friends have different schedules. youâre busy. shit sucks. we make the best of it.
knowing yourself. this relates to a lot of what iâve already said but like. knowing your emotional state and knowing what helps trick the monkey brain is helpful. stop repressing your feelings, friends.
talking to strangers. ordering from a menu! paying library fines. going to office hours. asking for a cashier at the register if there isnât one. ya this is hard. ya you gotta expose yourself. sometimes i just try playing a persona. like this isnât me ordering a sandwich. this is a cool me who knows how to talk to people who is ordering a sandwich.
you donât have to be friends with your roommates. you just have to live together in a way that doesnât make you two hate each other. ideally, you two will coexist in a way that doesnât interfere with the otherâs daily life.
give and taking. on the topic of roommates, sometimes your roommate can be a shitty person, but sometimes you are the shitty person! give a little but if theyâre negatively impacting your life, communicate.
communicating during disagreements. explain what your emotions are instead of blaming them. âi feel hurt when youâŚâ or âi feel frustrated whenâ or âi feel unappreciated when.â if things get heated, ask if you both can take a ten minute break and then come back. and donât bring up disagreements when the other party is preoccupied or going somewhere. you can legitimately schedule a discussion.
itâs okay to apologize. learning to swallow your pride gets easier each time.
knowing that people work differently than you. some people are not gonna click with you and itâs gonna seem like they have this whole brain process up there that is totally unlike yours. and yeah! thatâs how it is. and thatâs chill if they arenât hurting anyone else. work with them and be flexible!!Â
comforting people. you will probably/definitely see someone cry! hell if i know how to comfort people. someone please help. but some things iâve learned are: 1) different people need different things. different people need different things! 2) people need different things at different times. 3) you can ask them what they want and it wonât be weird. 4) apparently a lot of people like hugs? but ask. and itâs okay to not want a hug. 5) just show that you care in some way if you donât know what they need. i used to think that if somebody needed to tell me what they needed it was a sign that i just didnât know them well enough and we werenât compatible or i wasnât being a good friend. thatâs fake! friendship isnât based off of fitting naturally in every way and making an effort to be good for them is important.
knowing itâs okay to not be liked by everyone. itâs okay if strangers think youâre dumb because you said something dumb in public. you know youâre not dumb. itâs okay if not everybody you meet likes you. itâs okay if you do something cringey. everybody has their own shit to deal with and you will not shatter their world. grow and move on!
forgiving yourself. iâm trying this new thing where when i feel embarrassed about something i say. out loud. âi forgive myself.â and then i just try to grow from that and move on without getting caught in a spiral of shame.
knowing what you need vs what you want and what is better at the time. what you need: a shower. what you want: to not do that. solution: take a shower! or maybe what you actually need is to go to sleep? but guess what. you probably know what is good for you. the hard part is actually doing it.
realize that building habits is less work than discipline. emotional effort is expended every time you have to make yourself do something. just make it part of your routine and youâll just think itâs normal to do all the good things! like, for example, iâm trying to make it a habit to eat structured meals instead of a âeat when iâm hungryâ thing because i know that makes me skip meals, which is bad!
you wonât be able to do everything. forgive yourself for that. write down things that are top priority and focus on them. everything else is not important right now and you shouldnât beat yourself up for not being able to do them.
your health is important. iâm not saying health will solve all your problems. it wonât! but health will cause a lot of your problems to go away. because letâs face it. not sleeping causes a lot of problems.Â
itâs okay to ask for help. we say this a lot but itâs hard to internalize it. hereâs a thought: thereâs so much shame and hesitation about asking for help so by doing that youâre actually being proactive (which is respectable) and mature, and therefore⌠not weak or stupid. ask for help even before you need it! most people love to help others. and especially take advantage of people who are OFFERING help. for example: counselors at school or TAs. itâs literally their job. they want to do it. and if you donât want to talk to anybody in real life, my inbox is always open.
