📘 Chinese Pinyin Handbook
(English Version for Beginners)
🏫 What is Pinyin?
Pinyin uses Latin letters to represent the sounds of Chinese.
It is like phonics for English: once you know Pinyin, you can pronounce almost any Chinese word.
🔠 1. The 3 Key Parts
A. Initials (Consonants)
The first sound of a syllable (short, light).
Group 1 - Easy
b, p, m, f, d, t, n, l, g, k, h
Group 2 - Common
j, q, x
Group 3 - Tricky
zh, ch, sh, r (curl tongue)
z, c, s (flat tongue)
Specials
y, w
B. Finals (Vowels)
The main sound of a syllable (long, clear).
1) Simple Finals (6)
a, o, e, i, u, ü
2) Compound Finals (9)
ai, ei, ui, ao, ou, iu, ie, üe, er
3) Nasal Finals (9)
• Front nose: an, en, in, un, ün
• Back nose: ang, eng, ing, ong
C. Tones (Critical!)
Chinese is a tonal language. Changing the tone changes the meaning.
1st Tone (Flat)
mā (mother)
2nd Tone (Rise)
má (hemp)
3rd Tone (Fall-Rise)
mǎ (horse)
4th Tone (Fall)
mà (scold)
Neutral Tone (Light)
ma (in 妈妈 māma)
🔗 2. How to Spell
Rule: Initial + Final + Tone = 1 Syllable
Examples:
b + à → bà
m + ǎ → mǎ
zh + ē → zhē
x + iǎ → xiǎ
3-Syllable Rule:
sheng + yin → shēng yīn (sound)
🧠 3. Common Mistakes
1. Confusing zh/ch/sh and z/c/s
◦ zh/ch/sh: Tongue curls back
◦ z/c/s: Tongue stays flat
2. Pronouncing ü as u
◦ ü: Lips rounded (like in "green")
◦ u: Lips neutral (like in "good")
3. Ignoring tones
◦ Tone = Meaning
4. Pronouncing initials too loudly
◦ Initials should be short and light
✏️ 4. Practice Drills
Read Aloud (Daily)
• ā á ǎ à
• ē é ě è
• ī í ǐ ì
• ū ú ǔ ù
• ǖ ǘ ǚ ǜ
Simple Words
• nǐ (you)
• wǒ (I)
• tā (he/she)
• māma (mom)
• bàba (dad)
Sentences
• Nǐ hǎo. (Hello.)
• Wǒ xìng Wáng. (My name is Wang.)
• Zài jiàn. (Goodbye.)
🚀 Next Steps
1. Master the 4 tones first
2. Learn 1 initial group per day
3. Practice spelling with finals
4. Record yourself and listen back
5. Use flashcards for daily review
