I was thinking about this earlier, and I realized that I've never heard anyone talk about the place of guns in Fight Club.

The first thing that comes to mind is the phrase "don't bring a gun to a fist fight", which is just another version of the "don't bring a knife to a gun fight", but the first version means more 'match the level of strength of your opponent'. What I find interesting with this sentence within the context of Fight Club is that a gun is a surefire (pun non-intended) way to end a fight, by killing or severely injuring your opponent. But it's the *easy* way out. It's not the noble, manly way to end a fight. It's the coward's way out.

We see Tyler with a gun twice in the movie, the first time being for the first human sacrifice, Raymond K. Hessel. We learn Tyler does in fact own a gun, but we've only seen it now. Yet even when we see it, it's empty, because Tyler had no intentions of using it. The gun is simply a threat. Because killing Raymond with the gun would be the easy way out.

Tyler could realistically win any confrontation throughout the movie if he just pulled a gun on them. But that's the point; Tyler is not a coward. He never takes the easy way out.

And the irony in his death is that he was shot by a bullet. He holds the gun in his hand at the end, with no intention of using it on anyone. It's another threat. But the Narrator takes back the control, by taking the easy way out: shooting himself.
