----------------------------
Six months had passed since that date night with Clark, and who would say how life changing was having him in your life. He wasn't just a “decent guy”, he was the most thoughtful, sweet, and ridiculously attentive man you had ever met. Maybe it was his upbringing that made him such a gentleman, or it was just his nature. He brought you your favorite coffee order in the morning when your second graders were rowdy, distracting them, or well, he was distracted trying to understand every “six seven” joke the children made as they loved to confuse him. You felt like every moment spent by his side made you fall even deeper in love with him, almost blinding you with his warm heart.
But things had gotten complicated, a series of attacks had Clark working overtime with new reports at the Daily Planet, so you both had organized a date at the end of the week so you could catch up.
That Friday afternoon came swiftly. You had just cashed your paycheck at the bank and were walking at a fast pace to meet Clark at a local café. You were excited, you had missed his beautiful smile adorned by dimples and his way of making you laugh.
So lost in your thoughts, you didn't notice the person sprinting full speed at your direction. In the blink of an eye, a hooded figure shoved you hard, knocking you off balance to the floor. He had snatched your purse with all of your belongings, including the paper grade sheets of your students, running away with all your stuff, you had to stop him.
“Hey, stop! My bag!” you yelled, trying to get back in your feet to chase after the criminal. Driven by pure adrenaline and without thinking twice, you sprinted right after him. "Give that back!" you demanded as you followed him into an alley.
The deserted alleyway was blocked by a tall chain fence, a dead end. But instead of the guy feeling cornered, you felt like the only one in danger once the thief pulled out a pocketknife and started to walk towards you.
“Back off if you don't want to get hurt, this is mine now!” he replied, taking one more step at your direction before starting to sprint.
The adrenaline had quickly worn off, freezing you in place. Instinctively you closed your eyes, waiting for the worst to happen.
But it never came.
In a fraction of a second, a sudden wind swept through the alley. A metallic snap echoed, the sound of the steel hitting the floor instead of you. Slowly you opened your eyes, and standing in front of you, was Superman himself. He was holding the guy off the ground by his shirt collar.
But what took you out completely was Superman's expression. The Metropolis greatest hero didn't have his usual friendly smile, He looked pissed. His jaw was closed tightly, marking the features of his face, his broad shoulders were tense, and his striking blue eyes were dark and filled with rage.
“I-I'm sorry, I will give the bag back!” the mugger whimpered, dropping the bag on the floor.
“Leave…and don't ever steal again.” Superman tossed the guy, releasing him. The guy gave you one last look before running away from the scene, while the hero bend down to grab your purse, wiping it with his hand before giving it to you. While he walked to give it back, he used his X-ray vision for any injuries, but he could not see everything. “Are you okay?” he asked, softening his tone though his posture remained rigid and tense.
“I..I'm fine, thank you.” you whispered, still processing the shock from the scene. “Just a bit startled. I shouldn't have come after him.”
“I'm glad you are okay, peanut.” Superman murmured, looking down at the pavement with a mixed feeling of frustration and embarrassment from his actions. He was so distracted that he didn't notice the nickname slip, a caring name known and given by only one person in the entire universe, your boyfriend Clark. “I heard the commotion a few blocks away, you sounded afraid and it-” He stopped himself once he noticed the slip.
Superman's hands flew over his mouth instantly, his blue eyes widening in absolute horror as he realized what had just slipped out. The invulnerable hero now looked so different from moments ago.
“I-I uh, meant ma'am.” He tried to correct his mistake, adjusting his posture to look more Superman and less Clark. “My apologies, sometimes the adrenaline makes me-“
“Clark?” you asked firmly, taking a step toward him.
The hero looked defenseless, desperately trying to find a way out of this situation. “No, you must have me confused with someone else ma'am, I'm Superman…I don't know any-”
“Only my boyfriend calls me peanut, there's no way you know that!” You folded your arms in front of your chest while putting together the pieces of the puzzle and everything fit just right. “That was the reason we couldn’t meet last week, you were fighting…And that's why you are always late for our dates...You disappeared in the middle of dinner on our third date!"
Realizing he was completely cornered, the hero looked left, then right and once he felt secured, he relaxed his shoulders. The heroic posture vanished in an instant, replaced by the nature of the clumsy yet sweet farmboy
“Well…” Clark murmured in his normal tone, rubbing the back of his neck as a bright red flush spread up to his ears.
“You're Superman!” you gasped, caught between laughter and disbelief. “That explains a lot, I thought you started cheating or had some mommy issues, that's happened before.”
“What?! No, I would never do something like that, or have-“ Clark choked on his own breath, panicking at what you said. “I was going to tell you soon, I just wanted to make sure everything was fine before telling you, you deserve to know me like I want to know you.” He stepped closer until you were sharing the space, his hands reached for yours, holding them with care. “I outed myself tonight maybe because I couldn’t bare to keep the secret from you anymore.” He leaned down slightly to meet your eye level. “I just needed to protect you.”
“Well, the rescue was really impressive, Superman.” You emphasize the hero’s name while your hand reached for his cheek, caressing it softly even if he was indestructible.
Clark returned your smile, the same smile that made him fall in love with you from the start. He wrapped his strong arms around your waist, lifting you a couple of inches off the ground to pull you into a sweet kiss.
