I can totally see Will painting a wall or another type of bigger project and Mike helps out. They end up flirting a lot and Mike at some point playfully paints a little heart on Will's cheek. In the end they are covered in paint and making out.

They could already be dating doing this.

Bonus points for it being blue and yellow paint.

will does NOT open up easily. never has. it’s understandable how many may get that impression: his emotions are made very, very visible to the audience because his arc is internal and emotion based. this is mistaken for him being open about them… not true. he’s a closed book with his heart on his sleeve, which is an interesting contradiction

when you look at how this actually plays out for him, mike, joyce, jonathan, and everyone else don’t see or understand what’s going on with him for a really long time. mike is seen as someone who is repressed and private with his emotions, but in actuality he opened up quite easily when will provided support. note that in return, will never got to be honest with mike for the entirety of season 4. he only used his personal feelings in their conversations when they could help mike best; not to express any of his personal truth. because of this, he didn’t receive any support.

will keeps feelings to himself because he hates himself for his sensitivity and feels like people will think lesser of him for it. he never needed to prove that he’s anyone else’s idea of “strong” (as in, tough or above feeling emotion), he needed to do the hardest thing of all, being vulnerable and opening up of his own volition, for his OWN sake and no one else’s. this is why it was so crucial for him in particular to come out; his silence was becoming his tomb.

…Until the words best friend slowly evolved into something entirely different that didn’t really fit with what others described anymore, but he still clings to them because changing them to something else is scary.
