Tips on starting your own freelance graphic design business.

The first thing you want to ask yourself is: Are you ready to begin your freelance business? Have you evaluated your skills? Do you believe you have enough confidence and knowledge in your work to proceed? Take this quiz and find out. Telling your story in the way of branding yourself will be beneficial to your portfolio. Nobody wants to look over your work and feel bored. Let your personality shine through your logo, cover and letter head and resume. Then, people can feel you out before even speaking to you. Your past work is very important as well. Take a step back and ask yourself what you are good at. You should have these items in your portfolio. If you do not like doing logos then do not place a logo that you have done, place items that target the clients that you are looking for.

There are strategies and questions you need to ask yourself before finding clients.

Focusing on this target audience will help flourish your freelance business. “A good chunk of freelancers (20.8 percent, to be exact) say their biggest challenge is finding clients” (https://www.ama.org). Doing background and research about what kind of target market you are looking for can lessen the challenge. As stated above that having a area of what your are good at is key. But digging deeper into the specialized area and make sure that there is enough clients in that area that can keep your business going. You can be good at advertisement, but what kind? Magazine, newsletters, social media, posters etc. AIGA can be a great resource to narrow down your specialty. (http://www.aiga.org/guide-designprogramsdiffer). Keep tabs on the industry as well. Not just in the beginning of your freelance career, but always. Spend time online on what designs work best with what you are good at and who your target audience would be.

The next step into building your freelance business is promotion, promotion, promotion. Stick to is and be persistent. You have to build your reputation and sell yourself and do not sell yourself short. Be a sales person and know what you are talking about. Be everywhere. Learn to network with fellow artists….or anyone for that matter. Getting yourself out there and meeting new people can bring jobs, especially in places you did not even think of. By always having your business card ready you can always network. But knowing and talking to people is just the beginning. Learn the background of business and become savvy in that area as well as in design. There is nothing worse than finally obtaining the clients that you are looking for and you have no idea how to even run a business, you just know how to do design. There is a ton of competition in this area. And the competition could be the exact thing that could help you. Look up what these people did right, or wrong. Check out reviews and see what clients needs and requests are that are being met or not. Word of mouth can kill your career before it even starts. Client relationships are very important for the well being of your company. They make or break your business and they talk. Word of mouth will be the spill over after you obtain your first handful of clients but there are essentials that you need to know to ensure that you get good reviews.

Patience is one of the most important things to have when dealing with clients. Especially in a freelance business. When in an agency or working for someone else, that company picks the clients. When working for yourself you have to pick and work with your clients. People who are not familiar with the design world. That is why they came to you. You need to be patient when listening to the requests of the client. A lot of times they have a certain image in their head that they are gung-ho about having it depicted..exactly….by you. They can change things at a drop of a dime and not like the work you do all the time. This can be VERY frustrating, especially when you have spent time in creating this “amazing” design for them. If you let your emotions get ahead of you then your clients will feel that way too. Its your job to stay calm and professional. But feel free to state things to your clients when you feel as though your design expertise could outweigh their ideas. You can have a beautiful portfolio and designs in it but if you have bad client management, it can spell disaster for your company. After all, you are the expert and you want your designs to be successful for the clients, not just for you or making money. You just have to have a good delivery. Telling someone in any situation that their ideas are sub par is difficult and a sensitive subject, but doing it in your freelance business can burn bridges if you are not professional about it.
