Representation matters! 💕
Representation. Matters.
Exclusive: Meet America Chavez, Marvel’s new queer Latina superhero who just got her own comic book series
Hold onto your butts, this one’s good. Series writer Gabby explains that, “One [of the things that has most excited fans] is the identities: Queer Latina. She’s also a positive presence and has these catch phrases, like ‘chico.’ And she has feelings for Kate [Bishop, a.k.a. Hawkeye]. So what will the first major queer Latina superhero do with all her super crush-worthy powers?
“America will be one of 23 female-led titles currently in production”
“writer Gabby Rivera, who first garnered fame as the author of Juliet Takes a Breath, a YA novel about a Puerto Rican lesbian”
“And she has feelings for Kate [Bishop, a.k.a. Hawkeye]”
“feelings”
“for”
“Kate”
“series artist Joe Quinones and cover artist Marguerite Sauvage”
“America doesn’t know how powerful she is, but she’s gonna find out”
but also
“maybe there wasn’t space for me in comics”
“It’s a little bit terrifying and intimidating to be a queer woman entering the Marvel universe”
If you want to tweet Gabby Rivera, she’s @QuirkyRican on Twitter – her approach to America sounds PERFECT, and if you’re excited for the book (now or once it’s finally in your hands), let her know; we need our voices of support to be louder than the trolls. Make sure to let @Marvel know you approve of their decision to diversify both their leading heroes and their creator line-up, too.

where’s the interview w/ andy samberg where the interviewer asks about why there’s no jokes made around holt being gay and andy’s face twitches like “don’t do it.” and the interviewer goes on like “we live in such a weird PC culture though!” and andy laughs so uncomfortably i need it for science
His eyes in that last frame say, “I have lost any respect for you I might have had and I do not like you.”
I was thinking about this last night and Brooklyn Nine-Nine does have lots of jokes about Holt being gay. It’s just that they are not at his expense. The jokes aren’t LOL look at the gay guy calling everyone ‘girlfriend,’ caring about his appearance a lot and acting stereotypical ‘gay.’
There was Holt not waiting for the priest to finish speaking before saying, “I do,” at his wedding because he’s scared that the law finally allowing him to marry the man he loves will be rescinded.
There’s the time Holt and Jake manage to break out of prison because a cop is homophobic and the joke is; look at how small minded this cop is rather than LOL gay people!
Holt talked about an old partner and said something, “He wasn’t racist but he was homophobic. He was a good partner.” The joke is that he had a partner who only disliked one part about him that he couldn’t change and had no control over and that was a win.
The there are lots of jokes about Holt being gay but they are about how messed up the world is in its treatment and view of gay man rather than have Holt be stereotypical gay.
I love this show a lot, okay?
Listen up, kids
This is Kate Kane AKA Batwoman and I’m gonna tell you 3 reasons why I love her and why you should too
1. She’s a lesbian – in fact, she’s DC’s highest profile gay character
She attended military academy and there fell in love with a fellow student. When the military found out that Kate was a lesbian, they forced her out of the school. Kate refused to give her partner’s name, thereby protecting her partner and allowing her to stay in the academy.
2. She’s Jewish! How many Jewish superheros can you name? And in the Bombshell comics set in the WWII era, she’s a woman baseball player who by night, takes out Nazis

Alright guys, Technobabylon.
Point-and-click game.
SO MANY POC AND QUEER CHARACTERS.
And it’s only $1 in the current Humble Bundle.
I’m only a little ways in, but listen up. The first character you play is a young, skilled WOC. The second character you play is a typical boring old white male cop who is suspicious of technology (and his dead WOC wife is Tragic Backstory) but his super savy partner is a transwoman of Asian descent who might be a lesbian, idk? (It seems to have been implied. Maybe we’ll find out more later. She seems to go everywhere with emo white dude.) The third and fourth murders in the game are a mobster and his POC husband.
I’ve barely started this game and while I am so sick and tired of this standard male protag schtick, I’m 100% willing to overlook that and recommend the game because a) you only play as him part of the time, b) having to deal with him is tempered by getting to hang out with Lao, and c) diversity diversity diversity.
Also, sci-fi/cyberpunk. Point and click. So pretty.
You should definitely check it out.
PREVIEW: MS. MARVEL #12 (Release: October 26, 2016) by G. Willow Wilson, Mirka Andolfo, & Ian Herring
Friendly reminder to pick up your issue this week!
The massively popular deck-building game Magic: The Gathering (MTG) has just released new commander decks for mutiplayer matches, and one of the decks is lead by a gay military couple named Kyanaios and Tiro of Meletis. Their card features the couple in a subtle but supportive embrace (seen above)
Here’s MTG‘s take on their backstory:
In the age of antiquity, the humans of the region that would one day become the largest polis on Theros were ruled by the tyrant Agnomakhos, an immortal archon. Unchecked for generations, his power grew as he carved out a mighty empire. Kynaios and Tiro, joined by their love for one another and for freedom, rose to challenge him. The people rallied to their cause, and Agnomakhos was defeated. The polis of Meletis was founded on the ruins of Agnomakhos’s empire as a beacon of freedom and enlightenment, and its people chose Kynaios and Tiro to be its guardians.

Ms. Marvel #12
Why #gamergate is important
Fun fact: Morgan Ramsay, founder of the Entertainment Media Counsel, did an objective study of how much of gaming journalism talks about sexism or social justice.
To do this, he downloaded 130,524 articles from 37 RSS feeds of 23 outlets, including The Escapist, Rock Paper Shotgun, CVG, Edge Online, Eurogamer, Gamasutra, Game Informer, GamePolitics, GamesBeat, GamesIndustry International, GameSpot, GamesRadar, IGN, IndieGames, Joystiq, Kotaku, Massively, MCV, NowGamer, PocketGamer.biz, Polygon, Shacknews and VG24/7, published over a period of twelve months. He then did a search on how often these games articles mentioned sexism, feminism, or misogyny.
The result? Over a period of one year, 0.41% of 130,524 articles referenced feminism, feminist, sexism, sexist, misogyny, and misogynist explicitly.
That’s less than half of one percent.
So next time you hear someone whining that “feminism is taking over video games journalism”, what they’re actually whining about is that feminism exists in video games journalism.
This tweet happened:
So I give you some latinos in space! Cassian Andor as played by Diego Luna in Rogue One, and Poe Dameron as played by Oscar Isaac in TFA. This is available as phone cases, pillows and more in my shops here and here Today (Oct 17) everything on Redbubble is 20% off too!
for all the dark ladies out there: how to get away with murder has two black female characters that do not pass the paper bag test: annalise keating (played by viola davis) and michaela pratt (played by aja naomi king). I know it's not much, but I just wanted to say this for anyone who doesn't know the show :) (isn't it sad this is the only show I can currently come up with that has two dark skinned women in it?)
Oh oh you need to watch Queen Sugar! There’s two dark skinned black women there too. Although only one of them is a main character. But yeah its pretty sad there should be more than just two examples.

per recommendation from another anonymous messager:
1) grey’s anatomy: miranda bailey (also chief webber! and meredith’s sister maggie pierce, also bailey’s new husband, and that doctor who jackson quasi-rebounded from april with but she’s still around and killin it as part of the like secondary cast)
2) chicago med: nurse april, nurse maggie, director goodwin (doesn’t necessarily not pass the paper bag test but character is pretty cool), dr latham (a darkskinned orthodox jewish man!) and now dr charles’s daughter too
—-
I’ll also go ahead and recommend The Flash (Candice Patton as Iris West! also the actor who plays her dad, Det.Joe West, is beauuutiful and he was part of the OBC for RENT, Jesse something) and Code Black has a few black actors with recurring roles and Elementary has Marcus Bell who is a mainstay on the cast. Also HTGAWM added a new character, Meggy who is Wes’s girlfriend and she seems fantastic so far.
Anyone got other recs, esp for darkskinned women characters?

GIVE! FEMALE! CHARACTERS! STRONG! JAWS! YOU! COWARDS!
Aveline got a ton mods “fixing” her.
Cassandra was repeatedly called “too masculine” and even had a “scientific” scull comparison as “proof claiming they can’t enjoy the game with Cassandra’s jawline.
