Telling someone to use open source, privacy respecting alternatives is all well and good.. until you come across the problem that I've found.

If they're not easy to use, well documented, and friction-less.. they aren't going to be used, no matter how many threats you make.

See, the surveillance capitalist state has managed to get this far by making the services easy to use. Discord, Reddit, TikTok, Twixer, even BlueSky.. they made it as friction-less as possible for on-boarding and use.

That's how they get you.

Then, if you step out of line, they're all too eager to ban you, or worse, hand you over to the fash easily.

Expecting people who are scared of fash, trying to live in a fascist dystopian hellhole, to try to learn under those conditions never works. It just doesn't. The Stress and Trauma responses are real, and learning takes a backseat to just.. surviving.

So, bad documentation, obtuse UIs, not having the features that they're used to having.. are all red flags that will result in that project being abandoned.

It doesn't help if you then opt to charge for such projects for around £30 per single device! (Looking at you, PicoKeys developer! You arseclown!)

So, get off the hoity-toity "people should just learn more" viewpoint and start making software for everyone, not just the geeks/nerds.

Because they need it, and for some, it can be a life or death choice.
