I feel like the idea of flat affect has been so watered down for people. Flat affect doesn't just mean having a "bitchface", and it never has been just that.
How flat affect presents for me:
Limited expressions, I need to be actively thinking about making an expression to have it happen. Additionally, it often takes multiple tries to get the expression I intended. This isn't limited to positive expressions, I also struggle to make expressions conveying things like surprise.
Practicing facial expressions as a child. Being told my smile is "fake" by adults when they wanted a picture.
Having limited tone, I struggle to convey different emotions through my voice unless I am actively attempting. This presents for me mostly as, I will make a joke and people will think I am being dead serious. Multiple times I have made something I thought was very obviously a joke, and then someone will ask me later on if I was being serious.
Shocking teachers and counselors when I do show emotion, but also not showing negative emotions how people without flat affect do. I had a panic attack, and one of my counselors managed to walk right past me crying, because I had a flat expression despite being actively sobbing. The day after this another counselor pulled me to ask if I was ok, she said she was so worried hearing that I'd cried because I "never show much emotion".
I take selfies over and over, because I cannot get the "right expression", which has resulted in me giving up and just taking selfies with my resting face. Of course if I show someone a selfie I took, the conversation always is about how I am not smiling, and how weird that is.
If you have flat affect, please feel free to add your experiences in the comments/reblogs!
Autism actually can make people violent and aggressive, and Iβm tired of βautism advocatesβ saying it canβt. Many autistic people, especially higher support needs people lose control of their bodies during meltdowns and times of high emotion. Some autistics have limited control of their bodies at all times. This body brain disconnect is a prevalent associative feature of autism. This is not to say that measures shouldnβt be taken to protect and teach the autistic person and others, but you canβt erase real, but stigmatized parts of a condition, and then dare to call yourself an advocate. Just because a symptom is unpleasant or unpalatable doesnβt mean itβs not a genuine part of the disorder. Stop βcleansingβ your autism advocacy.
More silly memes we have made today for you π΅βπ«. Apologies for the poor editing, we are tired.
If we do not joke about these things, we will throw stuff!!!
Yes, that is our actual eye π . Lighting is not very good in the photos but hopefully it shows the βblueβ well enough hahah.
Sort of ramble + information below!
By the way. The whole βoh, well some of us have to push through our disability because we donβt have the option to be that disabled!β isnβt even laterally ableist, it is just ableist. Like, punching down, deeply fucking ableist, and I am so sick of it.
Great, congrats, you personally are able to βpush throughβ chronic fatigue and walk around a bit or whatever. Yes it sucks that you have to injure yourself to survive. But that is not unique to you/being LSN, and Iβm so fucking sick of less severely disabled people derailing every higher-needs post to try andβ¦. Guilt trip the op for being disabled??
It's gross!!! It's so gross!!! High support needs Disabled people deserve to be able to talk about their realities without receiving some of the most vile ableist talking points from everyone in and outside their community.
THANK YOU!! I've literally heard this for yearsss growing up as a physically disabled MSN autie. it's super infuriating and extremely tone deaf to our struggles.. this is why I left the community for a while, at first when I was in high school i LOVED the autism/ND community, and then it became less & less supportive and relatable to me as an MSN autie who does not mask well and is physically disabled.
In a sense I developed this mentality towards myself because of the abuse + ableism i suffered, i was forced to push WAY beyond my limits and then i lost 2 jobs, suffered recurring injuries + illnesses that could've easily been prevented and now i still can't work. This mentality seriously hurts disabled people, especially those of us who CANNOT just "push through" our literal DISABILITIES.

shoutout to people who don't speak in complete monotone but still have a smaller range of emotional expression than others.
shoutout to people who often get misinterpreted because they express a lot of different emotions in very similar ways.
shoutout to people who have the "wrong" reaction to a situation (e.g. laughing when bad things happen) and get treated worse for it.
shoutout to people who have exaggerated emotional expression and gets seen as overdramatic or manipulative.
shoutout to people who struggle to express their emotions in the "right way".

It burns my biscuits whenever I hear someone say that a person or group "doesn't contribute to society." Society is comprised of people. Those people are society. Society exists for and because of the people in it. It's like when I'm bicycling in the city and some schmuck leans out the window of his lifted pickup and yells at me for "blocking traffic." Bitch, I am traffic.

you know even if a homeless person or a starving person is in that position because of their own "bad decisions" i don't care. it doesn't matter. no supposed financial misstep is enough to condemn someone to homelessness or poverty.
Search and rescue teams do not ask if a hiker was properly equipped and prepared before they go out to look for them. EMTs do not ask if a driver checked their mirrors before they take them to the hospital. Lifeguards do not ask if a swimmer made a mistake by going into a riptide before they dive in after them. Judgement doesn't help anyone, including you, the person doing the judging. Just help people. Just shut the fuck up and help people.
Just shut the fuck up and help people.
As someone who's been homeless I seriously don't understand how or why this is even debatable..
Life is really stressful for everyone right now. A little extra snacking isn't going to hurt me. It might hurt my waistline, but it's worth it to be able to survive.
Besides, it's been shown that judging people doesn't make them stop their bad habits. If anything, it pushes them into them more.
My emotions are so confusing to me. Feeling completely neutral emotions, and yet still wanting to cry, makes no sense to me.
Shout out to the ten primate species, four bat species, elephant shrews, and the Cairo spiny mouse. Nobody else gets it
here you are sweetie

Ok, Iβm not the best person to be saying this, but the reason half of yβall* hate the new autistic Barbie doll is just aspie supremacy and racism.
Like, βoh no! For once a higher support needs, AAC using, autistic woman of colour is in the spotlight! God help us all!β (Sarcasm)
Seriously, the whole argument about how the doll sucks because autism βdoesnβt have a lookβ is foolish. Autism does have a look, but itβs not one single look. Many high support needs individuals are visibly autistic, stop erasing their existence.
Iβm not going into the racism part, because Iβm still in the process of educating myself about the topic, but needless to say, Iβve seen some pretty outright racist comments and takes on this new doll.
*not all of you, but many of you.
(Capitalism and the whole deal with Mattel is a valid reason to not like the doll, however this post is not about that.)
How βautism isnβt a disabilityβ mfs look at me when i say it is painful to shower, wear socks and eat, that i am always exhausted because being outside of my home is too unpredictable for me, to the point doctors wanted to see if i have cfs. Nope! Just autistic. Also that showering is painful and i have difficulty taking care of my hygiene because it is painful to shower
As an MSN autistic with ehlers danlos + an autoimmune disease, THANK YOU
