In this episode of Fic Ideas My Brain Should Have Come Up With 10 Years Ago: (would anyone read it?)
Kendrix wasn’t sure what had happened. One second the detective was standing there, the next - there was a pop, a flash, and Lynne lurched backwards, collapsing to the pavement like a broken doll. The camera she’d been inspecting flew out of her hands, landing with a crunch on the pavement several feet away.
As the screaming started, Kendrix rushed over to the detective, checking frantically for signs of life. “No, no, no, come on!” She looked around frantically. She had to do something, she had to. What had just happened? Why had it happened? She glanced at the retreating crowd, in the direction where the shot had come from. Whoever had fired was long gone.
A whirring, grinding noise caught her attention, and her gaze fell on the camera. That was it, that was the key. She couldn’t help Lynne, but whatever was on that memory card had to be important!
Inside the camera, Sissel was panicking. He could save Lynne! He knew he could! But he couldn’t do that without first reaching her, and no matter how he tried to reach through the Ghost World she was too far away. There were no other cores he could reach to make a path, no way to get to her. Unless...
He had no idea why the strange blonde had a core of the dead to begin with, he certainly hadn’t saved her. Sissel had promised to keep a low profile. But he’d also promised to keep Lynne safe, and some promises were more important. The camera was broken, so Tricking it didn’t take a photo, just resulted in some grinding of mechanisms. It was enough of a noise.
As the blond woman scrambled towards the camera, he reached out to her core of the dead and hoped for the best.
Just as Kendrix’s hand touched the camera, the entire world dissolved into a strange, oddly familiar spinning sea of red and black. “What?” she exclaimed, and then the reason for the sudden familiarity dawned on her. “Oh, no.” She was dead again, wasn’t she? She shouldn’t have assumed the shooter was gone.
“No, you’re not dead. But I need your help if we’re going to save Lynne.”
The sudden male voice startled her, and she cast around, looking for another person, spirit, what have you. Nothing but the swirling miasma. “Who said that? Where are you?”
A throat cleared. “Down here.”
Kendrix looked down, and blinked. Of all things, she hadn’t been expecting a small black cat with a red bandanna around its neck, blinking up at her with worried yellow eyes. “Who - what are you?”
“Sissel.” The cat scratched at an ear idly. Its mouth never moved but she could tell the voice belonged to it. Him. Whatever. “I can explain later, but if you just bring the camera over to Lynne I can save her. There’s still time.”
No, really. Would anyone read this?
