*smarty-pants on* I recently couldn’t help but notice that sometimes ppl tend to get confused about Chiss names in general. That’s logical bc…. names… chiss…tf?

So I thought I could give a little advice in naming your ocs bc who doesn’t love an oc with perfect canon background?

Ahem… let’s strap in and go! So first we take some look at the books from Timothy Zahn (praise the chiss creator!). His newest Thrawn is a good example, or Outbound Flight (sadly non-canon now)

So, ofc there’s the well known Thrawn. His full name is Mitth'raw'nuruodo

As you can see, a full Chiss name always has three name sections separated by an abostrophe.

The first section (Mitth’raw’nuruodo) is your Chiss family name (comparable to humans’ last names).

This means Thrawn is a part of the Mitth’ family. You can easily spot Chiss releationships this way. Take Mitth’raw’nuruodo and his (still canon?) brother Mitth’ras’safis. It’s now very easy to see that both are related, as they both have the first name section Mitth’.

The second name section (Mitth’raw’nuruodo) is the individual part of the name the Chiss give to their kids. Together with the last letter/ letters of the first section and the first letter/letters of the last name section it forms the core name of a Chiss. Therefore Mitth’raw’nuruodo’s core name is Thrawn.

Other examples are Mitth’ras’safis = Thrass, Chaf’orm’bintrano = Formbi, Chac’hav’imran = Chavi or Chaf’ees’aklaio = Feesa (notice Feesa’s family relation to Chaf’orm’bintrano as they are both Chaf’!)

The Chiss themselves only use their significant core names if they are talking to familiy, friends or a social party which is of equal standing to them (f.e. a dignitary to another dignitary).

Otherwise Chiss adress each other with their full names bc that’s the polite thing to do in Chiss society. However, as most non-Chiss cannot pronounce full Chiss names right, the Chiss often allow them to use their core name or simply introduce themselves with their core name.

Now to the last name section (Mitth’raw’nuruodo). In Chiss politics there are nine ruling families on their homeworld Csilla. So the last name section is always associated with the official house/familiy a Chiss belongs to and serves. ‘nuruodo symbolizes Thrawn serves/served the Nuruodo family, which manages the Chiss defendes and military troops.

As you can get officially adopted by the ruling families, the last name section may change.

Now congratulations, you’ve done it and read it all! Have fun and keep creating those wonderful ocs!

Edit: So (big thanks to @misschiss!)​ - there’s apparently a fact that Thrawn and Thrass were both adopted by the ruling Mitth’ family, so the first section would symbolize the ruling family, but Wookiepedia also cleary states there’s a ruling Nuruodo family so I have no clue now if the last or the third section symbolizes the ruling family xD
