Take This To Heart â„ Rory
The stench of cigarette smoke that permeated the interior of his car annoyed Ripley to no end but she held her tongue on the matter, knowing a much bigger fight was coming. Her jaw ticked as his voice escalated and she bit back every profanity and foul thought that crossed her mind in reply until he was finished speaking. Once he was done she took one deep breath and then looked over to him âDo not yell at meâ Ripley said, emphasising each word âIâll talk about this with you but Iâm not going to have this conversation if youâre fucking yelling at me!â She retorted. Had she been more calm she may have found it amusing to hear his words repeated on her lips, him having said nearly the same thing to her not too long ago.Â
"Iâm not some kind child that you need to worry about and protect Iâm perfectly capable of taking care of myself. I told him yes because no matter how much I may disagree with what he does I still love my father, Rory and I donât want me leaving to be a reason for our relationship to suffer, Iâve already made up my mind Iâm not going to change it and itâs only a few months Iâll be fine, can you just chill out?"
Ripleyâs features contorted in confusion at the last few sentences that came out of Roryâs mouth. He couldnâ have been serious, was he really worried about her dumping him over a few tricks that her father might pull? âRory please tell me youâre fucking jokingâ She said, annoyed that heâd even suggest such a thing âYou donât have any reason to be worried about me dumping you I donât care what my dad tries I love you you bloody idiot, thatâs not going to change anytime soon.â
"Well, you don't have to curse at me either, Ripley!" Rory said, whipping his head to finally look at her. "You're not a child, and I never said you were. But you are my girlfriend, which gives me the right to be concerned about you and your safety. I'm not saying you can't take care of yourself, but telling me not to worry about you is like telling the sun not to shine. It happens whether you're five hundred miles or five inches from me. I don't like when we aren't together, and I worry about you." He sighed. "You have had enough trouble with your dad already, this is just adding more to that load. And just so you know, I had plans for the two of us this summer. But I can scrap all of them, as well as the reservations that I made, since you decided to change that plan today, without even bothering to ask me about it."
The last few sentences put a bitter taste in his mouth, and he had to bite his lip. "I love you too, Ripley, but I know how persuasive your father can be. And I know how real 'Out of sight, out of mind' can be." He cranked up the car, and sighed. "Let's just go home."
