Miasma was idly turning back and forth in his chair, eyes fluttering as he struggled to stay awake while reading the ministry’s newspaper when the ghoul walked in. His eyes darted up to Chain, his pupils immediately dilating into small white dots at the sight, the sleepiness snapped right out of him.

“… Good morning, Chain.” Miasma said after a moment of thought. He rose to his feet.

“What?”

It’s not that he didn’t recognize the ghoul in front of him, yeah, he’d seen Miasma around the ministry, and most definitely had a few dreams where Miasma appeared, but had he ever even spoken to this quintessence ghoul?

A certain sense of deja-vu seemed to strike Chain; but he still didn’t know what Miasma meant by ‘decided to keep him around’.

…Decided to keep Chain around? Well, why wouldn’t they?

Feeling slightly dazed, Chain cleared his throat and pushed his shoulders back, straightening up his posture.

“… I say that about a lot of ghouls.” Miasma said, the harshness in his voice completely absent. It was an uncomfortable feeling, to not want to hurt him despite the memories he held of Chain. But maybe this time could be different.

Who did send him here?

“I don’t…” he made eye contact with Miasma for the first time, genuinely confused with himself, “…I don’t remember.” He seemed to forget a lot. Was that a new trait?

Chain sat in the corner of his room, facing the wall. A cardboard box sat next to him, slightly open. One could look inside and see pill bottles, ones full of Chain’s meds. The ministry had trusted him to know when to take them and not to use them for anything malicious, and Chain was afraid.

But tears streamed down his cheeks and he rocked back and forth on the ground, clutching his knees to his chest. He hadn’t eaten in two days, and he was very sick.

At the sound of Ivone’s voice, chain’s head turned. His reaction time wasn’t very keen either, and he looked like he hadn’t slept in weeks.

“G-Get… out… of my room…”

Ivone crept closer. He seemed more cryptid like than last time. His face was barely visible only his teeth could be seen. He crawled onto Chains bed picking up one of the pill bottles grinning.

“Meds? My my Chain the ministry trusts you now? …or maybe they’re hoping you do it.”

“G-Get… out…” He thought he was done crying (over someone like you) but he clearly wasn’t. His eyes moistened and he took a step towards Ivone.

“G-Get… out…” Chain swallowed dryly. The skin on his hands and arms was dry, rough and almost like leather.

“I-I… need them f-for…” Chain swallowed again, shaking his head. He didn’t know what to do it. He was more than a mess. He wasn’t there all the way, there was no soul behind his empty eyes. He looked like a ghost. Chain was replaced by pain, and it showed.

“Why… must y-you come…” at the worst times.

The ghoul answered swinging his feet. He felt rejuvenated. He felt energized in Chains suffering.

Chain felt like he was about to vomit, probably due to the many pills he’d taken a few minutes ago, but he attacked anyways.

He leapt at the ghoul, his movements sloppy and unmeasured. He just knew to go for the throat.

“I’ll find her— I’ll find her some day—“ Chain growled, shoving Ivone off of his bed. He sliced the ghoul’s left shoulder open with his hand, his brain too overstimulated to realize. He was seeing red— wait— no— his vision was beginning to fade. Tunnel vision. His breathing got heavier as he tried to attack Ivone, not quite able to form words. He couldn’t even hear his own voice in his head.

He couldn’t make out his own voice against the noise. There were other people talking to him, and there was a loud buzzing and a ringing in his ears from the blood that— wait, when did he start bleeding?

Chain looked around the room frantically. He didn’t even recognize it. The room he’d spent so many years in was starting to fade away.

He wondered if Ivone’s face would be the last thing he saw. He glanced back over at the ghoul who now stood above him. Chain didn’t say anything. He didn’t think he had to, it was so loud. Ivone could basically see exactly what Chain was thinking.
