So youโve learned Hangul. โWhat do I do now?โ is probably your next question. I would know because you all have asked me at least ten times a day. The people have spoken; a lot. So I shall give the people what they want. Here is a short masterlist for beginners who are endlessly stuck at Hangul and have no idea what to do next:
Typing in Korean: ย ย โก Hangul (just in case you havenโt gotten that part yet) ย ย โก Practice your Hangul: typing test ย ย โก How to change your keyboard: language setting ย ย ย โก Korean Fonts
Flashcards / Apps: ย ย โก Quizlet ย ย โก Anki ย ย โก Apps
Websites: ย ย โก Talk to Me in Korean (TTMIK) ย ย โก How to study Korean (HTSK) ย ย โก Lang-8 ย ย โก KoreanClass101 ย ย โก Haru-Korean ย ย โก Learn Korean ย ย โก Sogang Korean
Masterlists: ย ย โก Study Korean 101 ย ย โก Fluentlee ย ย โก From Ireland to Korea ย ย โก Lost in Korean Translations ย ย โก Flicker of Korean ย ย โก Korean from Dummies ย ย โก Bite Sized Korean ย ย โก Bulletproof Korean ย ย โก Sohee Studies ย ย โก Hannah-DulSet ย ย โก Korean Study Tips ย ย โก Su-eop ย ย โก GGKorean
My Resources / Recommended: ย ย โก Textbooks ย ย ย ย ย ~ I will always recommend TTMIK (textbooks here) ย ย โก Korean Games ย ย โก Websites ย ย โก Apps ย ย โก Webtoons
Beginner Need to Know: ย ย โก Introducing yourself ย ย โก Vocabulary (literally fill your brain with as much vocab as possible) ย ย โก Batchim (๋ฐ์นจ) ย ย โก Sentence Structure ย ย โก Conversational Korean
Tips: ย ย โก The romanized Korean is not a complete representation of the Korean alphabet. Understanding that pronunciation/spoken Korean is just as important as reading and writing will help your Korean flourish - so drop romanization. ย ย โก You are literally free to do whatever you want. You could learn phrases, vocab, grammar - you could even start taking beginner lessons at a KSL school or find a tutor; your Korean language journey is your own. What works for me might not work for you. ย ย โก Thereโs always a honeymoon stage. What I mean by this is sometimes people are caught up in the excitement of learning Korean that they forget to do the boring stuff - ie grammar and extensive studying. The honeymoon stage usually filters those who are serious and those who arenโt about learning Korean. ย ย โก However you chose to learn Korean, own it. If youโd like to learn through KDramas/KPop, thatโs okay. If you want to go to Korea and immerse yourself, thatโs okay. Own it. And work hard while youโre at it.
Studying Korean is a beautiful and painful process. As a former beginner, I can tell you itโs a lot of work but itโs worth it. I hope that you have some guidance now when youโre done learning Hangul, but itโs really up to you the path you decide to take. Best of luck! I will always be here to answer your questions - donโt hesitate to message. Happy Studying :)

Asking the Right Questions (2/7)
์(์)?
Why?
์ ๋ํํ ์ด๋ฌ๋ ๊ฑฐ์์? : Why are you doing this to me?
์ ์ฌ๊ธฐ ์์ด์? : Why are you here?
์ ์ ํ์ด์? : Why didnโt you do it?
์ ๊ทธ๋ ๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด์? : Why do you think that?
์ ๋๋ง๊ฐ์? : Why are you running (away)
Even though ์(์) has only one translation; why, sometimes in certain contexts it can be used to mean what.ย
is only translated to mean what when:
Asking asking the reason why someone is doing something
Example:ย
Person A: stares at person B
Person B:ย ์?
Explanation: In English if you say caught someone staring at you then you say What (are you looking at)? but in Korean ์(์)?ย can be used and it holds the meaning of why (are you looking at me).
how to stop translating in your head? When I read a sentence in Korean, I may know the meaning of all the words and I'm able to explain all the grammar used, but the sentence still doesn't make sense to me, so I try to translate word by word and just guess the overall meaning, and then when I read the translation I just go "ooh, I knew that, that makes sense". Sometimes I feel like I'm more worried about guessing the right translation than actually understanding the sentence meaning
So, as youโve already guessed by now, translating everything into your native language from Korean, has kind of set you back a little. On your road to fluency, it takes a little getting used to, but once you start to do these things, thinking of the language will get A LOT easier.
1. My first big tip is to:ย ASSOCIATE the word with that thing rather than itโs translation.
Example: ์์ -> chair (ENG) -> image of chair VS ์์ย -> image of chair
Another example I can think of is in ํ๊ธ (hangul), donโt think of the romanized equivalent (b, m, d, g, etc.), think of the sound that character produces.ย
If it helps (with vocabulary), I would recommend downloading Lingodeerย and FEL Korean, both apps give you a log of vocabulary with the pictures (as well as the translation). Focus on the pictures!ย
2. My next big tip is to: have sticky notes everywhere!
This is pretty straight forward and kind of like association, but if you put a sticky note on your chair with ์์ taped to it, you will begin to associate your chair with the Korean word. Everywhere you go, you see the Korean equivalent - does that make sense?
3. My last biggest tip is to: think in Korean
This might be a little confusing (I donโt mean only thinking in Korean), so I will explain to the best of my ability, and if youโre still confused - donโt hesitate to ask for more clarification.
Sometimes, for me, when I am practicing Korean, I like to just spout Korean words. 80% of the time, it doesnโt make sense, but it helps me get in the flow of thinking in Korean and not translating everything Iโm saying. An anon a little while back, mentioned that they would talk to their dog in Korean just to get the feel of speaking Korean. You can do this or you can speak to yourself - whatever gets you in the feeling of speaking Korean.
I would also recommend writing out something, then record it in your voice, then listening to it over and over again. You are the one that wrote the Korean and spoke it - so you know what you wrote and can pick out the Korean phrases easily.ย
Internal narration, or speaking to yourself, not only helps your listening, but it also helps your pronunciation. When youโre ready, I would recommend speaking with a native - so you can get those corrections and pronunciation tips right away.
I hope this helps and that you start thinking rather than translating. Keep up the good work, and Happy Learning :)

hello!! iโm confused about something. is there any difference between โ์๋คโ and โ์๋๋คโ?
Hi there! Hopefully I can help :)
์๋ํ๋ค -> ์๋ค (also a contraction of ์ ํ๋ค)ย ย ย ~ follows adjectives (and is usually paired with -์ง)ย ย ย ~ can beย โnotโ orย โnot do xโ
Examples:ย ย ย 1. ๊ณต๋ถํ์ง ์์(์) - (I) donโt studyย ย ย 2. ์ด๋ ต์ง ์์(์) - not difficult
์๋๋ค -> ์ย ย ย ~ follows nouns and can also come in front of adjectives and verbs
Examples:ย ย ย 1. ์ ์๋์ด ์ด๋์์ - Iโm not a teacherย ย ย 2. ์ ์๋ป์ - not pretty
If youโre still confused, donโt hesitate to send me another message ~ Happy Learning :)

Random Korean word of the day #4
๋จธ๋ฌผ๋ค
-To stay
Example
๋ค๊ฐ ๋ด ๊ณ์ ๋จธ๋ฌผ ์๊ฐ ์์ด์?
-Canโt you stay with me? / canโt you stay by my side?
Learning Korean with Kpop #5
Song: ๋ด๊บผ์ผ - Produce 48
Word/Phrase of the day : (์) ใน ์(๊ฐ) ์๋ค
Todayโs lesson will focus on how to say wether you can or canโt do something.ย The sentence structure you can use to say that you โcanโ do something is:-(์ผ)แ ์ ์๋ค like wise when you canโt do something you useย -(์ผ)แ ์ ์๋ค
Examplesย
์๋ค = to sleep
์ ์ ์๋ค = can not sleepย
์ ์ ์๋ค = can sleep
์ก๋ค = to catch
์ก์ ์ ์๋ค = can not catchย
์ก์ ์ ์๋ค = can catch
An easier way of saying that you can not do something is to use ๋ชป before the verbย
Example
๊ฐ ์ ์๋ค = ๋ชป ๊ฐ๋ค [verb: ๊ฐ๋ค] = can not go
๋ณผ ์ ์๋ค = ๋ชป ๋ณด๋ค [verb: ๋ณด๋ค] = can not seeย
๋จน์ ์ ์๋ค = ๋ชป ๋จน๋ค [verb: ๋จน๋ค] = can not eatย
ํ ์ ์๋ค = ๋ชป ํ๋ค [verb: ํ๋ค] = can not do
**remember that all these sentences are in their un-conjugated verb forms and must be modified before use**
** The ๊ฐ used in the phrase of the day is optional, and is just for emphasis.
ย ํ ์(๊ฐ) ์์ด I(you) can't do it. / It's not possible to do it.**
Sample Sentencesย
์ด์ ๋๋ ์จ๊ธธ์๊ฐ ์์ด = I cant hide it anymore - ๋ด๊บผ์ผ(pd48)ย
์ข์ ์ด์ ๋๋ฅผ ์์ ์ ์๊ฒ = Fine, now I can forget you - Gashina(์ ๋ฏธ)

Song #2: One Shot Two Shot by BoA
A lyrical breakdown
Grammar + Verbs
๊ฐ๋น ์ง๋ค : to hyperventilate
๋์์ง๋ค : to rise up
-๋ + Noun : add to verb stem -๋ to modify the noun
Example
๋ญ๋ฐ์ ์ข์ํ๋ ์น๊ตฌ = a friend who likes chicken feet
์ข์ํ๋ค = to like
์น๊ตฌ = friend
Adjective/Verb + (์) ใด ๊ฑธ : 1. Expresses a regret about things that have happened already but against your expectation or wish 2. Can also be protesting a difference in opinion or plan of others.
When the V/ A ends in a consonant, add ์๊ฑธ์. When ending in a vowel or ใน, add ใด ๊ฑธ์. Without ์ at the end, it becomes a casual talk
Example
๋๋ฌด ๋ฆ๊ฒ ์์ด. ํ๊ฐ ๋ค ํ๋ฆฐ๊ฑธ์ = (I) came too late. The tickets were all sold out.
ํ = ticket
ํ๋ฆฌ๋ค = to sell out
๋ฆ๊ฒ ์ค๋ค = to come late
Verb + ๊ณ ์๋ค : To be doing
์๋ค : to know
ํ๋ฅด๋ค : to fall down
๋ฐ์ง์ด๋ค: to dazzle
Verb + ์/์ด/ ํด ๋๋ค : to be in a continuous state of action
Example
๋ค๊ฐ ์ปคํผ๋ฅผ ๋ง๋ค์ด ๋์์ด์ = I made coffee (ready) for you
์ปคํผ = coffee
๋ง๋ค๋ค = to make
์ ์๋ค: to drench
ํฉํํ๋ค: to be ecstatic
Noun๊ณผ (์) Noun : noun and noun, noun with noun
๋น ์ง๋ค : to fall for
์/์ด/ํด ๋ฒ๋ผ๋ค : completion of action or event where nothing remains after
์์๋๋ค : to get started
ํ๋ฆฌ๋ค: to be bewitched

Asking the Right Questions (1/7)

i have learned ํ๊ธ already but i am confused on what sources i should. i have heard about ttmik, htsk, lingodeer, korean from zero but im not sure what to use. and also do you have any tips for speaking. iโm really shy and i canโt bring myself to speak since iโm afraid of messing up. plus i donโt know much vocab and grammar. so should i get ti certain level and try to start speaking then or should i just try to start speaking now? sorry that this is so long but i really want to learn correctly.
Haha donโt worry about it being long Iโm more than happy to help. I would suggest using TTMIK for grammar and vocab and getting apps like HelloTalk for practical use and using Kdramaโs for listening practice.
Also keep a daily diary in korean and voice record your entries as well to build speaking confidence. Once youโve done that if you have kakaotalk/Line you can try voice calling with language partners you met in hello talk.
I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask ๐๐
