something about how Lestat and Armand have different styles of survival. Lestat is good at being what he is. Through all the pain and humiliation and tragedy he goes through, he still retains himself. He'll always be him because...it's simply what he does. He's spent his whole human life surrounded by people who didn't understand him (except Gabrielle) and didn't try to. He's been looking up the whole time, knowing that there's something greater. Him and Gabrielle had their borders from achieving this: Lestat was an illiterate trapped between wilfully ignorant, content people. Gabrielle was a woman past her "prime", who is educated and informed but ultimately resigned to the walls of the Lioncourt estate and her role in society. No wonder Lestat never represses himself or tones it down. He REFUSES to repress himself. He's so tenacious and will live through all the pain and humiliation and loss that befalls him because at the end of the day, he's still him. armand is good at surviving. there's a reason why he's such a scrambled, desperate force especially in TVL when he just gets out of the Children Of Satan. he will make himself LIVE no matter what. it's adapt or die. he meets all these people and tells them that he loves them after such a short time. he will mold himself to whatever role he needs to play. he's a prodigy, he's an angel, he's a son, he's a lover. he's a demon, he's a leader, he's a companion. but under that, there's not much of a solid identity to cling to. it's a chicken little situation: what if something changes? what if i get taken away again? what if my master dies? what if my faith falls? he's ready. he's in perpetual survival mode. But what I love about him is that at the end of the day, he possesses the toughness and mental tenacity it takes to survive. He opens his eyes and witnesses it ALL. He seemingly doesn't take decade long slumbers the way Lestat or even Marius does. (a favorite detail about him) He never sleeps. He lives through EVERYTHING. God I can't get over it.
