I work for fred meyer (a kroger store in the nw) and the union really isnt that great. I started off at a non union store thinking ohh the union must be amazing oh it's going to be so great imma have a great time when I move to a union store. But when I did move stores dispite me having the exact same position my hours and pay were cut bot my pay checks are quite literally half of what they were and I can barely live on this shit. Like I went from eating decent meals and health care to eating cup of noodles and no health care. Those of you who live in a city with a fred meyer you might know that we just got our contract re negotiated and that "everyone" is getting a 1 dollar raise. Woo a win! Yah no not really for anyone that isnt front end food. I work in the home department where we do more work than food does. Like you dont see food move furniture and then work on the cash register for 8 hours. The home department makes a good 2 dollars less than food and is over worked and under staffed... you might be like oh why does this apply to unions? It applies because the union only favors certain departments more than others they dont care about the home department where a 30 year old with a chronic back injury or a 19 year old who is severely anemic lift furniture that's twice their weight or cashier for 8 hours only stopping for short breaks on 2 hours of sleep because they closed the night before and had to open the next day.
