Elyan’s very sweet but he’s also incredibly deadpan. Gwaine of course has more to him than he lets on but he’s a bit of a clown, as we all know and any time he makes a quip or a joke, he’s often looking to those around him for a smile or a laugh. But I don’t think he’d be discouraged by Elyan’s lack of response. I think he’d be encouraged. Gwaine’s a very perceptive person and I’ve no doubt he would pick up on Elyan deliberately keeping his face - not neutral but “unimpressed” - right away. In fact, I think he’d absolutely DELIGHT in it, and also how sassy Elyan is. (I mean, you all remember his fake laugh that dropped into the most unamused face when the rest of the knights tossed around the water?). I think that both of them would find it FUN.

Gwaine would have to fight to get a smile (and not a snarky one or a smirk, a smile) and a laugh from Elyan and Elyan, knowing that’s what Gwaine wants, will resist purely on principle. I’m telling you, he would. Like, oh you want me to laugh? To chuckle? To guffaw? Just because of that, I won’t.

I also love elyaine!!!!! I love their dynamic in any form - I love platonic and romantic both equally - so I didn't specify on purpose so it could apply to both! :D But I've been Thinking About Them (romantic flavoured) especially since I posted this, and we can add some flirting (and pining) for a little bit of spice. We can have the knights watching as these two losers spar both with sword and with words, shaking their heads. We can have Leon wondering, aloud, if they've figured themselves out yet and Percival saying "No. Gwaine made me peer-review ten jokes today." We can have Gwen giving Elyan some significant eyes and Elyan, very annoyed that his sister doesn't even pretend he's not transparent to her, say "yes, Gwen, SirGwaineOfCamelot" just like she did at the castle of fyrien. Merlin looks at Gwaine with raised eyebrows and Gwaine rolls his eyes so hard he almost brains himself on the castle wall.

And one day, Gwaine says something. He's not even trying. He doesn't even mean it to be a joke. Elyan laughs like it escaped out of his mouth and it surprises them both. He laughs a long, full belly laugh, wipes at his eyes and Gwaine stares at him in such awe and delight... But then Elyan's laugh peters off and Gwaine explodes, playful but outraged; "THAT? That made you laugh?"
