From the Cloud to Capital: Three Lessons from Marketing AWS Gen AI That Forged My Product Vision
Hey Tumblr, Shivam here. I used to be the Head of Gen AI Marketing at Amazon Web Services (AWS), and now I'm building my own fintech startup, Cent Capital. The journey taught me that what enterprises really want from AI is completely different from the public hype.
It all clicked for me in a meeting with a CIO who said this:
"I have 30 years of proprietary engineering data... Forget the art. How do you solve that?"
That's the real challenge. So, I created a playbook based on my time on the front lines.
Lesson 1: Enterprises Buy Solutions, Not Spectacles.
It's not about cool demos. It's about trust. Businesses are terrified of data leaks, factual errors ("hallucinations"), and a lack of control. The products that win are the ones that solve for security and reliability first.
Lesson 2: Your Ecosystem is Your Engine.
You can't scale alone. The real power comes from enabling thousands of partners to build on and sell with your platform. The goal is to shift from being a "tool provider" to an "economy creator."
Lesson 3: Your Moat is Your Data Flywheel, Not Your Model.
In a world full of powerful open-source models, your specific LLM isn't a long-term advantage.
Your defensibilityâyour moatâcomes from creating a product that captures unique, proprietary data through its very use.
The Founder's Playbook for AI
For anyone building in this space, hereâs my advice:
Solve an entire WORKFLOW, not just a single TASK.
Build for the security chief (CISO) FIRST. Your product is useless if it can't pass a security review.
Capture unique DATA. That's your only true competitive advantage.
We're putting all of this into practice at Cent Capital. The goal is to build AI you can actually trust with the things that matter.
